The aim of this one-day workshop is to share existing research, discuss common practices, and to develop new strategies and tools for designing for social justice in HCI. This workshop will bring together a set of HCI scholars, designers, and community members to discuss social justice perspectives on interaction design and technology. We will explore theoretical and methodological approaches in and around HCI that can help us generatively consider issues of power, privilege, and access in their complexity. We will discuss the challenges associated with taking a justice approach in HCI, looking toward existing practices we find both productive and problematic. This workshop will bridge current gaps in research and practice by developing concrete strategies for both designing and evaluating social change oriented work in HCI, where agendas are made clear and researchers are held accountable for the outcomes of their work by members of their field site and the research community. © 2016 Authors.

Mechanical properties of penta-graphene nanotubes

Penta-graphene is the name given to a novel puckered monolayer of carbon atoms tightly packed into an inerratic pentagonal network, theoretically, which exhibits excellent thermal and mechanical stability and can be rolled into penta-graphene nanotubes (PGNTs). Herein, we perform the first simulation study of mechanical properties of PGNTs under uniaxial tension. In addition to comparable mechanical properties with that of carbon nanotubes (CNT), it is found that PGNTs possess promising extensibility with typical plastic behavior due to the irreversible pentagon-to-polygon structural transformation and the hexagon carbon ring becomes the dominating structural motif after the transformation. New technologies and rising customer expectations are motivating key improvements in the construction sector towards more integrated and organic systems using novel computational fabrication processes. Natural systems are dependent upon stress or strain requirements where the material properties are optimally distributed. Using heterogeneous composite materials with a variable material distribution for distinct functional requirements, similar to natural structures, will enable to model, simulate and fabricate construction elements with specific loading conditions. This work has developed a strategy to optimize material composition, through an algorithm editor combined with a FEM software. The code was created to locally adjust a multi-material ratio according to the Von Mises stress map, simulating nature's structural behavior, to produce functional graded construction elements. A concept wall prototype was tested as a case study, to explore the variation of material porosity. Access to quality, accurate and timely weather information is important. In order to improve weather information quality and quantity, increasing the number of operational Automatic Weather Stations, also referred to in this document as densification should be prioritized. In this paper, we provide research findings of a survey conducted from November 2014 to January 2015 to ascertain the status of weather stations in Uganda. Weather station density was found to be sparse and yet many of the available weather stations were non-functional. Based on the distribution of available operational weather stations, we are proposing densification strategies including climatological zones, security and land policies. To achieve sustainability of the weather stations, we commend improving human resources aspects among other things.

In injection molding process, warpage is one of the most common defect that has been look into. Warped products not only visually unsatisfied, but might affect its functionality. Thus, a good parameter setting combination through optimization is required to minimize warpage. The conventional approach are complicated and inefficient. This paper review the recent non-conventional optimization approaches in injection molding process. It was found that naturally inspired algorithm is the mostly applied technique for warpage optimization problem.

In this study, the effects of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR-50) as compatibilizer on the properties of Standard Malaysian Rubber/Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (SMR L/EPDM) blend were investigated. Standard Malaysian Rubber/Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer / Epoxidized Natural Rubber (SMR L/EPDM / ENR-50) blends were prepared by two-roll mill with five different compositions (i.e., 80/20/0, 80/20/1, 80/20/3, 80/20/5, 80/20/7 and 80/20/10), which the (SMR L/EPDM) content fixed at 80/20 which is the optimum ratio for (SMR L/EPDM) depending on our previous study. Cure characteristics, mechanical properties studies were performed to determine the compatibility of SMR L/EPDM blends in the presence of ENR-50 as a compatibilizer. The optimum cure characteristics showed by SMR L/EPDM blends with the presence of ENR-50, which lower scorch time t2 and cure time t90 and increase the cure rate index CRI. In addition, SMR L/EPDM blends with the presence of ENR-50 have improved the physical properties such as swelling test, crosslink density and hardness test.

Recycled Natural Rubber Latex Gloves Filled Chloroprene Rubber: Effects of Compatibilizers

In this study, the effects of the compatibilizers; trans-polyoctylene (TOR) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR-50), on the cure characteristics and tensile properties of recycled natural rubber latex gloves (rNR-G) filled chloroprene rubber (CR) were investigated. Blends consisting of rNR-G in a weight ratio 20 phr in CR and The compatibilizers TOR and ENR-50 at different concentrations, i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 phr, were prepared using a two roll mill. Incorporation of TOR resulted in a reducing of the cure characteristics, meanwhile ENR-50 increased them. On the other hand, both of TOR and ENR-50 were improved tensile properties. These effects are attributed to the enhanced interfacial adhesion between rNR-G and phases through the compatibilizing effect induced by TOR and ENR-50, and the good dispersion of the rNR-G phase in the CR matrix. The results confirmed that TOR and ENR-50 could potentially be used as compatibilizers for the recycled natural rubber latex gloves filled chloroprene rubber.

The process of using one image to guide the filtering process of another one is called Guided Image Filtering (GIF). The main challenge of GIF is the structure inconsistency between the guidance image and the target image. Besides, noise in the target image is also a challenging issue especially when it is heavy. In this paper, we propose a general framework for Robust Guided Image Filtering (RGIF), which contains a data term and a smoothness term, to solve the two issues mentioned above. The data term makes our model simultaneously denoise the target image and perform GIF which is robust against the heavy noise. The smoothness term is able to make use of the property of both the guidance image and the target image which is robust against the structure inconsistency. While the resulting model is highly non-convex, it can be solved through the proposed Iteratively Re-weighted Least Squares (IRLS) in an efficient manner. For challenging applications such as guided depth map upsampling, we further develop a data-driven parameter optimization scheme to properly determine the parameter in our model. This optimization scheme can help to preserve small structures and sharp depth edges even for a large upsampling factor (8× for example). Moreover, the specially designed structure of the data term and the smoothness term makes our model perform well in edge-preserving smoothing for single-image tasks (i.e., the guidance image is the target image itself). It performs well in several challenging applications in avoiding halos, gradient reversals and properly preserving edges with noise/texture being well smoothed. Through extensive experimental results, we show that the proposed RGIF can have promising performance in many applications such as guided depth map upsampling, flash/no flash filtering, detail enhancement, HDR tone mapping, structure smoothing and clip-art JPEG compression artifact removal. In this research, the effect of different sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration (3, 6 and 9 wt.%) on the tensile properties of linear low density polyethylene / date seeds (LLDPE/DS) composites were investigated. The size of DS particles was measured at (125 - 250 μm) and the ratio of LLDPE over DS was fixed at 90/10 wt.%. The samples were prepared using extrusion process (screw speed at 60 rpm and barrel and die temperature at 160°C and 165°C respectively) followed by injection moulding process (from feed to exit die zone temperature at 160, 165, 170 and 175°C respectively). Results suggest that the addition of NaOH particularly 3 wt% has improved the tensile strength. Additionally, the elongation at break has improved as well. However, the high concentration of NaOH, particularly 9 wt.% effects negatively on these properties. In contrast, the Modulus shows different trend, which increased as NaOH concentration increased in the composites. The SEM section shows the improvement on DS surface as low NaOH concentration used (3 wt.%) and deterioration on the DS surface as high NaOH concentration used (9 wt.%).

In this study, the synthesis and characterization of epoxidized natural rubber / Titanium dioxide (ENR-25/TiO2) composites in two different solvent (Toluene and Chloroform) via sonication technique was conducted using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). Spectroscopy results showed new peak at 1662 cm-1 for both ENR-25/Titania composite films, which is related to weak C-O stretching vibration. Moreover, The peak at 3390.4 cm-1 and 3384.3 cm-1 of the composites are produced by Ti-OH stretching vibration shifts. The composite with toluene solvent showed poor dispersion of TiO2, which can be seen by the agglomeration embedded in the matrix. The composite with chloroform showed same trend of composite with toluene. The poor TiO2 dispersion in the composite can be observed by the surface as bright layers. These layers appeared because the TiO2 particles covered the surface of purified ENR-25 matrix.
