In this work, the compatibilization effect of trans-polyoctylene rubber (TOR) on the cure characteristics, tensile properties and morphology of epoxidized natural rubber / sawdust flour (ENR-25/SD) compounds was evaluated. Five different TOR content (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 phr) was used. Results showed that the increasing of TOR content caused decreasing on scorch and cure time. Moreover, the maximum torque has improved. The minimum torque showed decreasing as TOR content increased indicating that the rubber compound became less viscos and easy to process. The addition of TOR, particularly high TOR content (10 phr) into rubber compounds has increased the interfacial adhesion between SD and ENR-25, which in turn improved the tensile strength and modulus of the rubber compounds. The elongation at break has decreased as TOR content increased indicating that the samples became less flexible. SEM micrographs proved that the high TOR content presented stronger SD/ENR-25 than low TOR content.

The characterization and thermal stability of purified epoxidized natural rubber with 25 mol% epoxidation (ENR-25) and treated epoxidized natural rubber with 25 mol% epoxidation / Zirconium dioxide (ENR-25/ZrO2) Composites were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The ENR-25/ZrO2 composites were treated with acetic acid and two different loading (50 and 100 mg) of ZrO2 were used to form the composites. FTIR results show the ester (C-O) peaks at 1000-1300 cm-1 due to the presence of acetic acid in the composites. The disappearance of epoxide peak at range 880-875 cm-1 indicated that ZrO2 have formed hybrid bonds with opened epoxide rings. The both ENR/ZrO2 composites showed 2 major thermal degradation steps (304 - 489°C and 493 – 551°C) for 50 mg ZrO2 loading and (306 - 497°C 512 – 581°C) for 100 mg ZrO2 loading indicating that the thermal stability of the composites have improved.

The massive increase of spam is posing a very serious threat to email and SMS, which have become an important means of communication. Not only do spams annoy users, but they also become a security threat. Machine learning techniques have been widely used for spam detection. Email spams can be detected through detecting senders' behaviour, the contents of an email, subject and source address, etc, while SMS spam detection usually is based on the tokens or features of messages due to short content. However, a comprehensive analysis of email/SMS content may provide cures for users to aware of email/SMS spams. We cannot completely depend on automatic tools to identify all spams. In this paper, we propose an analysis approach based on information entropy and incremental learning to see how various features affect the performance of an RBF-based SVM spam detector, so that to increase our awareness of a spam by sensing the features of a spam. The experiments were carried out on the spambase and SMSSpemCollection databases in UCI machine learning repository. The results show that some features have significant impacts on spam detection, of which users should be aware, and there exists a feature space that achieves Pareto efficiency in True Positive Rate and True Negative Rate.

The applications of biopolymers that are requested in the society for sustainability and environmental safety have many limitations. That is can be attributed to the limited mechanical and thermal properties of biopolymers. The aim of this study is to diminish the limitations of the biopolymers properties. Polylactic acid (PLA) as one of the famous biopolymers was selected to investigate the effect of incorporating of hybrid fillers, natural halloysites nanotubes HNTs and Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles. In the first stage, HNTs was added to PLA matrix in different loading (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 wt%). In the next stage ZrO2 was incorporated to PLA/HNTs in two loadings (1 and 3 wt%). The mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break and Young's modulus) were investigated for both of PLA/HNTs and PLA/HNTs-ZrO2 bionanocomposites. PLA films incorporated with 4 wt% loading of HNTs resulted in optimum mechanical properties due to the homogenous distribution of halloysite nanoclay, which increased the tensile strength and elongation at break by 70% and 27% respectively. Unfortunately, the addition of ZrO2 reduced the mechanical properties of PLA/HNTs-ZrO2.

The utilization of biopolymers in the applications that meet demands in society for sustainability and environmental safety has been limited. That is owing to the poor mechanical and thermal properties of biopolymers. The goal of this study is to improve the limitations of the biopolymers properties. polylactic acid (PLA) as one of the most important biopolymer was selected to investigate the effect of incorporating of natural halloysites nanotubes HNTs with different concentrations (0–8 wt%) on PLA chemical and hydrophobic properties. In the second series, Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles were added to the PLA/HNTs film with the optimum mechanical properties in the first series. the chemical structure and surface wettability were investigated for both of PLA/HNTs and PLA/HNTs-ZrO2 bionanocomposites. The addition of ZrO2 resulted in appearance of OH groups in the FTIR graph. In addition, the increasing of ZrO2 loading led to increase the hydrophobicity of the PLA nanocomposites.

The regular physical activity with enough amounts of intensity, duration and frequency plays a key role in our health and body shape. However, for sedentary individuals who have negative or even painful feeling on exercise, it is a challenge to maintain enough activities. We propose a pleasurable persuasive model (PPM) to tackle the challenge. PPM emphasizes the combination of psychological driven and physiological adaptation, encouraging health behavior change in an aesthetical pleasurable way. Coming with a complete set of design strategies including pleasure, guidance, motivation, and reminder, a prototype system is developed to experiment the effectiveness and feasibility of the approach. The real time biofeedback and aesthetical pleasure is integrated seamlessly into this system. Results from a three-week in-lab user study have demonstrated that, the system is able to encourage regular physical activities with enough amounts of intensity, duration and frequency in a pleasurable way, proving the effectiveness of PPM.

The key intended learning outcome of interdisciplinary engineering courses and programs is the development of students' ability to integrate knowledge known as integrated understanding. Still, there are only few examples of assessment tasks designed to deliberately assess this attribute in engineering education, and little is known about how to develop credible scoring rubrics that can assess integrated understanding promoted by specific interdisciplinary courses. In this paper we offer an operational definition of integrated understanding developed based on the *** present a method for designing credible scoring rubrics for course-specific integrated understanding based on this definition. Our process establishes the rubric's validity through aligning course learning objectives with the rubric criteria and reliability through involving course teachers who often come from different disciplinary backgrounds in developing performance-level descriptions. We tested the method by applying it to design a rubric for evaluating integrated understanding in an interdisciplinary undergraduate elective course in Biologically-Inspired design. The resulted rubric was used to grade students' reports (n = 27) by the course teachers who came from disciplines as varied as Biology and engineering. Reliability calculated through Intra-Class Correlation (ICC) was good to excellent with regard to all criteria. The rubric can thus be reliably used by the course teachers to draw valid conclusions regarding progression in students' integrative understanding in their course. Additionally, this method can be used to establish credible scoring rubrics for evaluating students' integrated understanding following participation in other interdisciplinary engineering courses. © 2016 TEMPUS Publications.

Trust is often linked to the emergence of cooperative behaviours that contribute to successful project outcomes. However, some have questioned the functional relevance of trust in contractual relations, arguing that control-induced cooperation can emerge from enforcement of contracts. These mixed views are further complicated by the multi-dimensional nature of trust, as different trust dimensions could have varying functional consequences. The aim of this study was to provide some clarity on the functional consequence of trust in the project supply chain. Data was gathered through passive observations, document reviews and semi-structured interviews with supply chain parties on two case study projects in the UK. A thematic data analysis approach was used to uncover multiple perspectives on the functional consequences of trust in the supply chain. Findings revealed that the weaker dimensions of trust, which are impersonal (cognition-based and systems-based) and the stronger (relational-based) dimension of trust, all fostered beneficial behaviours in the supply chain (effective knowledge sharing and self-organising behaviours). However, additional behavioural consequences (relational flexibility and extra commitment) emerged when trust was relational in nature, implying that different trust dimensions and their associated behavioural consequences can be prioritized in the supply chain based on perceived work package risks.

The years 2023 and 2024 were characterized by unprecedented warming across the globe, underscoring the urgency of climate action. Robust science advice for decision makers on subjects as complex as climate change requires deep cross- and interdisciplinary understanding. However, navigating the ever-expanding and diverse peer-reviewed literature on climate change is enormously challenging for individual researchers. We elicited expert input through an online questionnaire (188 respondents from 45 countries) and prioritized 10 key advances in climate-change research with high policy relevance. The insights span a wide range of areas, from changes in methane and aerosol emissions to the factors shaping citizens’ acceptance of climate policies. This synthesis and communications effort forms the basis for a science-policy report distributed to party delegations ahead of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to inform their positions and arguments on critical issues, including heat-adaptation planning, comprehensive mitigation strategies, and strengthened governance in energy-transition minerals value chains. © 2025 The Authors

SURF (Speeded up robust features) detection is used extensively in object detection, tracking and matching. However, due to its high complexity, it is usually a challenge to perform such detection in real time on a general-purpose processor. This paper proposes a parallel computing algorithm for the fast computation of SURF, which is specially designed for FPGAs. By efficiently exploiting the advantages of the architecture of an FPGA, and by appropriately handling the inherent parallelism of the SURF computation, the proposed algorithm is able to significantly reduce the computation time. Our experimental results show that, for an image with a resolution of 640x480, the processing time for computing using SURF is only 0.047 seconds on an FPGA (XC6SLX150T, 66.7 MHz), which is 13 times faster than when performed on a typical i3-3240 CPU (with a 3.4 GHz main frequency) and 249 times faster than when performed on a traditional ARM system (CortexTM-A8, 1 GHz).
