Trust is often linked to the emergence of cooperative behaviours that contribute to successful project outcomes. However, some have questioned the functional relevance of trust in contractual relations, arguing that control-induced cooperation can emerge from enforcement of contracts. These mixed views are further complicated by the multi-dimensional nature of trust, as different trust dimensions could have varying functional consequences. The aim of this study was to provide some clarity on the functional consequence of trust in the project supply chain. Data was gathered through passive observations, document reviews and semi-structured interviews with supply chain parties on two case study projects in the UK. A thematic data analysis approach was used to uncover multiple perspectives on the functional consequences of trust in the supply chain. Findings revealed that the weaker dimensions of trust, which are impersonal (cognition-based and systems-based) and the stronger (relational-based) dimension of trust, all fostered beneficial behaviours in the supply chain (effective knowledge sharing and self-organising behaviours). However, additional behavioural consequences (relational flexibility and extra commitment) emerged when trust was relational in nature, implying that different trust dimensions and their associated behavioural consequences can be prioritized in the supply chain based on perceived work package risks.

The years 2023 and 2024 were characterized by unprecedented warming across the globe, underscoring the urgency of climate action. Robust science advice for decision makers on subjects as complex as climate change requires deep cross- and interdisciplinary understanding. However, navigating the ever-expanding and diverse peer-reviewed literature on climate change is enormously challenging for individual researchers. We elicited expert input through an online questionnaire (188 respondents from 45 countries) and prioritized 10 key advances in climate-change research with high policy relevance. The insights span a wide range of areas, from changes in methane and aerosol emissions to the factors shaping citizens’ acceptance of climate policies. This synthesis and communications effort forms the basis for a science-policy report distributed to party delegations ahead of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to inform their positions and arguments on critical issues, including heat-adaptation planning, comprehensive mitigation strategies, and strengthened governance in energy-transition minerals value chains. © 2025 The Authors

SURF (Speeded up robust features) detection is used extensively in object detection, tracking and matching. However, due to its high complexity, it is usually a challenge to perform such detection in real time on a general-purpose processor. This paper proposes a parallel computing algorithm for the fast computation of SURF, which is specially designed for FPGAs. By efficiently exploiting the advantages of the architecture of an FPGA, and by appropriately handling the inherent parallelism of the SURF computation, the proposed algorithm is able to significantly reduce the computation time. Our experimental results show that, for an image with a resolution of 640x480, the processing time for computing using SURF is only 0.047 seconds on an FPGA (XC6SLX150T, 66.7 MHz), which is 13 times faster than when performed on a typical i3-3240 CPU (with a 3.4 GHz main frequency) and 249 times faster than when performed on a traditional ARM system (CortexTM-A8, 1 GHz).

Internet of Things (IoT) has given rise to the fourth industrial revolution (Industrie 4.0), and it brings great benefits by connecting people, processes and data. However, cybersecurity has become a critical challenge in the IoT enabled cyber physical systems, from connected supply chain, Big Data produced by huge amount of IoT devices, to industry control systems. Evolutionary computation combining with other computational intelligence will play an important role for cybersecurity, such as artificial immune mechanism for IoT security architecture, data mining/fusion in IoT enabled cyber physical systems, and data driven cybersecurity. This paper provides an overview of security challenges in IoT enabled cyber-physical systems and what evolutionary computation and other computational intelligence technology could contribute for the challenges. The overview could provide clues and guidance for research in IoT security with computational intelligence.

Evaluating the extent to which an individual building consumes energy in excess of its peers is the first step in initiating energy efficiency improvements. Energy benchmarking offers such an assessment, albeit simplified. A widely used energy benchmarking tool is the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star® Portfolio Manager (PM), which is based on the Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) database. This tool relies on standard linear regression models between building energy use intensities (EUIs) and certain building shell characteristics and equipment types. The statistical significance of these models is rather poor, and they only include continuous building variables. In an effort to improve these models, we have investigated the use of a state-of-the-art, tree-based ensemble learning methodology, the random forest (RF) algorithm, to identify the most influential CBECS parameters that impact building EUI for medium office and school building types. Surprisingly, none of the building features turn out to be really influential. Many of the CBECS building features found to be ranked relatively high are not the ones included in the PM models, and the resulting RF models were only marginally better than the linear regression PM models. These findings cast doubts on the veracity (i.e., the accuracy and completeness) of the data contained in the CBECS database. More careful appraisal is warranted given the widespread use of this database for extracting meaningful generalized correlations between energy use and various building and related characteristics. The poor statistical significance of these correlations has important implications for ongoing building energy conservation policy instruments, such as energy reporting and disclosure legislation being enforced by numerous U.S. cities. © 2015 ASHRAE.

3D Ear Shape Matching Using Joint -Entropy

In this article, we investigate the use of joint a-entropy for 3D ear matching by incorporating the local shape feature of 3D ears into the joint a-entropy. First, we extract a sut^cient number of key points from the 3D ear point cloud, and fit the neighborhood of each key point to a single-value quadric surface on product parameter regions. Second, we define the local shape feature vector of each key point as the sampling depth set on the parametric node of the quadric surface. Third, for every pair of gallery ear and probe ear, we construct the minimum spanning tree （MST） on their matched key points. Finally, we minimize the total edge weight of MST to estimate its joint a-entropy the smaller the entropy is, the more similar the ear pair is. We present several examples to demonstrate the advantages of our algorithm, including low time complexity, high recognition rate, and high robustness. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that, in computer graphics, the classical information theory of joint a-entropy is used to deal with 3D ear shape recognition.

As laboratory plays a vital role in engineering curriculum, delivering these programs and evaluating them have been the two major challenges for universities offering distance learning engineering courses. This paper presents relevant aspects of the idea of using the digital medicine in cancer, so that to shape a viable strategy for creating and implementing an interactive digital platform, NEO-VIP, that should be the basic support to design the strategy for integration of basic, clinical and environmental research on neoplasia progression to cancer. The two main components of the VIPRO Platform are represented by the workstation 'engineering Station' for CPS (Cyber Physical System) and 'omics' technology and by the 'Graphical Station' for the development of a virtual mechatronic system environment and virtual reality for system components' motion. The NEO-VIP Platform will consolidate the collaboration of specialized institutions in IT, medicine, health, life standards so that to enhance their capabilities to work as a consortium. The results lead to the possibility developing NEO-VIP Platform in the IT modelling field, applied on bio-medical data, as a new player alongside with the existing ones. So, new improved methodologies for investigating social implications of machines working with and for people will be applied. © 2016 IEEE.
