This paper presents the development and performance test of electric motorcycle in South East Asia i.e. in Singapore and Malaysia. National University of Singapore (NUS) team converted ICE based motorcycle (Honda CBR400) into battery electric motorcycle using lead acid battery pack and lithium polymer battery pack. Fuel Cell Vehicle Group in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) built a fuel cell electric motorcycle which used hydrogen fuel cell system (named H2Motive® fuel cell motorcycle), lithium polymer battery pack and ultra-capacitor module. Road tests have been conducted to test the performance of both electric motorcycle types. Performance of H2Motive® fuel cell motorcycle was done by participating South African Solar Challenge 2008 in technology class. Results showed that H2Motive® fuel cell motorcycle was able to travel about 2400 km. Some roads were at steep and hilly climb and the motorcycle could stand during heavy rain. The converted CBR400 was tested in World Advanced Vehicle Expedition with 1600 km travel distance. NUS team's e-bike claimed third spot in that rally. Both type of electric vehicle performed well during the rally. It can be concluded that two of them were ready for gaining road-legal status.

The paper studies the flexible robotic cells in cooperation with automated guided vehicle (AGV), in the presence of obstacles, at constant or variable speed and variable load, aiming to optimizing the interaction between AGV and flexible robotic cell components. Overall system performance is analyzed by using modeling tools for discrete event systems like Generalized Stochastic Petri Net (GSPN). The interaction between AGV and flexible robotic cell components is implemented through communication messages using serial data received from an optical XY encoder, communication protocol receive function is modeled with GSPN. Improving of the stability performances and real time motion control are analyzed and the virtual projection method is adopted using the Versatile Intelligent Portable Robot Platform VIPRO. The obtained results, validated on the experimental RTOS robotic platform and DMQX language extension for robotic applications, lead to higher performance in relation to interaction optimization, decrease the flexible cell's cycle time, increase mobility and stability of the AGV and also the development of new technological capabilities of the control systems.

In this paper the performance of the Adaptive Averaging Channel Estimator (AACE-LS) which is a modified Least Square (LS) estimator and the AACE-LMMSE which is a modified Linear Minimum Mean Error (LMMSE) estimator, are compared with respect to the conventional LS and the LMMSE estimators. The AACE is an estimator which is based on the averaging of the last N Scattered Pilots (SP) from the DVB-T2 model carried in the received OFDM symbols. The proposed method could in general be applied to any pilot based estimator. The noise introduced by the channel is considered as Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) with zero mean and thus an averaging process is used to eliminate it. The estimator adaptively follows the fluctuations of the amplitude envelope in the time domain and adapts the size of the buffer N, with respect to the coherence time (Tc). Finally, based on the averaged estimated channel, the LS or the LMMSE equalizer is applied to the received signal in the frequency domain. Simulations clearly show that the performance of the AACE-LS is superior to the conventional LS estimator and is near to the performance of the LMMSE with no need of a prior knowledge of the statistics and the noise of the channel and thus if the channel is unknown to the receiver, the AACE is a good choice.

This paper studies the walking robot hybrid dynamic control in real time in order to increase movement stability of walking robots on flat terrain, with obstacles or uneven ground, at constant or variable walking speed and variable load. The motion trajectory positions of the robot leg end-effect or and joints, reaction forces and the walking robot dynamics are analyzed and the virtual projection method is adopted using the Versatile Intelligent Portable Robot Platform VIPRO. The obtained results lead to higher performance in relation to the walking robots movement possibilities, the real-time robot balance control, gait control and predictable motion control, providing increased mobility and stability, and also the development of new technological capabilities of the control systems.

Coverage prediction is of prime importance for TV broadcasting. A classic model used for TV coverage prediction is the Longley-Rice ITM (Irregular Terrain Model). Other well-known multiple knife-edge diffraction models are the Epstein-Peterson, Deygout, and Giovaneli methods. In this paper, comparisons are presented between accurate field-strength measurements, taken by a Rohde & Schwarz FSH-3 portable spectrum analyzer using precision calibrated antennas and calculated results from the Longley-Rice model, and the multiple knife-edge models in conjunction with the 3-arc-second SRTM (Satellite Radar Topography Mission) terrain data. Calculations are limited to the main 2 knife-edges of the propagation path. The Longley-Rice model predicts received field strength accurately in most cases even in mountainous terrain with multiple diffracting obstacles in the VHF and UHF TV Bands. However, in some long distance fringe reception areas field-strength is underestimated by the Longley-Rice model, while it is accurately calculated by the multiple knife-edge diffraction models.

A novel and fast chaotic cryptosystem for image encryption

In recent years, there has been growing interesting in image encryption based on chaotic systems. In order to improve the effect of encryption, a large amount of operations are implemented in the most chaos-based cryptosystems. However, the runtime of chaos-based cryptosystems would be increased with the rise of operations. In this paper, a novel algorithm is proposed to generate cipher key for the permutation-diffusion architecture. The cipher key not only relates to the plain-image, but also the generated time of cipher key is shorter than the conventional method. On the premise of security, a novel and fast permutation-diffusion architecture based on chaotic systems and variable control conditions is proposed. For the sake of increasing the key space and enhancing the security of proposed architecture, variable control conditions used in this cryptosystem as the parameter and initial value of same chaotic system are generated from the cipher key related to the plain-image. So the proposed algorithm can effectively resist the most attacks against permutation-diffusion architectures. Finally, theoretical analyses and numerical experimental results show that the proposed chaos-based cryptosystem possesses high security and sound time of image encryption, which is suitable for protecting the image information Copyright © 2014 American Scientific Publishers.

Urban resilience: two diverging interpretations

This paper uses two diverging interpretations of resilience to review and assess current UK policies and guidelines for urban resilience, a term generally associated with the strength of key systems and cities and their capability to maintain functionality in the face of external shocks. Both developed in scientific studies, the first interpretation (engineering resilience) is based on a mechanistic model of systems that can recover their original state aftershocks, and the second (ecological resilience) is based on an evolutionary model enabling adaptation to disturbances. Through a literature review, practical applications to planning are discussed for each model in terms of long-term efficacy. The contribution of this paper to an understanding of urban resilience is therefore twofold. First, an identification of the long-term consequences on the built environment of the policies associated with each model is provided, with the mechanical model ultimately hindering, and the ecological model favouring, adaptation. Second, some approaches to generate effective responses to environmental and societal change are identified, together with enabling tools. Ultimately, this paper emphasizes that the idea of a resilient city is fit for this age characterized by uncertainty, although it requires the recognition within planning practice that urban adaptation cannot be attained with current methodologies, and that much can be learned from theories on the resilience of ecosystems. © 2015 Taylor & Francis.

During the practice of industrial design, digital methods are used to support the generation, development and specification of creative three dimensional (3D) form. Despite the increasing capabilities of digital methods, the distinctive nuances of current practice continue to use non-digital methods, particularly during the creative concept generation activities. This paper reports on a research project that combined emerging and established digital design technologies to define an approach for total 'Digital Industrial design' (DID) that employs only digital methods (e.g. no pens/paper) with no post-process finishing (e.g. smoothing/painting of rapid prototype parts). The paper concludes that DID has the greatest potential for change and benefit during concept generation, where haptic feedback modelling and monochrome 3D printing have the capacity to replicate some of the qualities of tactile formgiving associated with workshop-based sketch modelling. Haptic Interfaces for Compensating Dynamics of Rescue Walking Robots

This paper presents a Neural Network approach to compensate dynamic terms, friction force in particular, of a rescue walking robot used in haptic interfaces. The impedance control through dynamic compensation of the friction force is studied, followed by the implementation of neural intelligent networks in the feed-forward loop in order to eliminate the corresponding terms in the dynamics, friction force in particular. The friction force model is analyzed using a general compensation method after which a trained Multi-Layer Neural Network is introduced in order to obtain an accurate friction model so that the movement of the walking robot feels free and unconstraint.
