In recent years, there has been an increased interest in using agent-based simulation models to investigate the evolution of cooperative behaviour in spatial evolutionary games. However, the relationship between individual player mobility (or migration) and population dynamics is not clear. In this paper, we investigate the impacts of alternative migration mechanisms in the spatial N-player Snowdrift game. Here, agents occupy sites in a two-dimensional toroidal lattice. Specific game instances are created by nominating N sites from each of the local neighbourhoods. We use a genetic algorithm to evolve agent game-playing strategies. In addition, agents have an opportunity to migrate to different sites in the lattice at regular intervals. Key parameters in our model include the migration rate, the actual dispersal distance, the "take-over" scheme, the group size N, and the relative cost-to-benefit ratio of the game. Detailed simulation experiments show that the proposed model is able to promote cooperation in a population of mobile agents. However, the magnitude of the dispersal distance plays a significant role in determining population dynamics. Our findings help to further understand how migratory (mobility) patterns affect evolutionary processes. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Conventional 3-channel color images have limited information and quality dependency on parametric conditions. Hence, spectral imaging and reproduction is desired in many color applications to record and reproduce the reflectance of objects. Likewise RGB images lack sufficient information to successfully analyze diabetic retinopathy. In this case, spectral imaging may be the alternative solution. In this article, we propose a new supervised technique to detect and classify the abnormal lesions in retinal spectral reflectance images affected by diabetes. The technique employs both stochastic and deterministic spectral similarity measures to match the desired reflectance pattern. At first, it classifies a pixel as normal or abnormal depending on the probabilistic behavior of training spectra. The final decision is made evaluating the geometric similarity. We assessed several multispectral object detection methods developed for other applications. They could not proof to be the solution. The results were interpreted using receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves analysis. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

The effectiveness of a system refers to the accuracy and completeness with which users achieve specified goals. These two aspects are interpreted as errors and completion in the context of usability testing. However, a holistic view of effectiveness is not straight forward to establish in a comparative test because the two measures focus on different aspects of user outputs. In this paper, we propose a predictive method to measure a system's relative effectiveness based on its own performance prediction. We achieve it by using an adapted confusion matrix to establish a correlation model between the two measures. A real-world use case is provided to demonstrate the usefulness of our method in a comparative study of the two websites. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In system of systems engineering, stakeholders are individuals, groups or organizations that stand to gain or lose from the success or failure of a system of systems. Systems of systems pose unique problems for stakeholder analysis due to their evolutionary nature, emergent behavior, operational independence, managerial independence, and geographical distribution of their constituent systems. This paper proposes the use of social networks and crowdsourcing to identify and prioritize the stakeholders for system of systems projects. The proposed method crowdsources the stakeholders to recommend other stakeholders, builds a social network of stakeholders, and prioritizes stakeholders using social network measures. The paper describes the method, and discusses the strengths and limitations of applying the method in system of systems projects.

Marketing tourism via games is a new phenomenon. This research uses a qualitative method to explore the motivation of tourist players. Through content analysis of the focus group results, it identifies five reasons to play a tourism game on holiday, namely, curiosity;exploration;socialization;fun and fantasy experience;and challenge and achievement. Suggestions to tourism marketing are drawn based on the findings.

In today's ever-changing market, global competition, technology development, customer demands, and decreases of product life cycles push logistics organizations in a supply chain (SC) to shift towards to flexible, robust, autonomy, responsive, and collaborative organization such as a virtual enterprise (VE). Internet and mobile technology support SMEs collaboration to establish VE with an inter-organizational network, virtual organization and integration based on core capabilities of partners. To survive in the competitive market, these SCs require agility and effectiveness which are obtained by forming highly dynamic VEs within supplier networks. Therefore academic and corporate interest in VE in supply chain management (SCM) has increased considerably in recent years. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between VE and agile SC (ASC) and provide further insights into the enhancement of enterprise capability and adoption of ICT and its impacts on VE in SCM. A conceptual hypothetical model is proposed to demonstrate impacts of three factors on ASC. To clarify the relationships among these, a structural equation model (SEM) is implied to examine the hypotheses based on observed data. The SEM consists of a measurement model (exploratory factor analysis-EFA and confirmatory factor analysis-CFA) and a structural model (path analysis). The results provide empirical evidence that the beneficial impacts of VE on the ASC.

This study explores the environmental impact of the conversion of an internal combustion engine (ICE) sports motorcycle into a converted battery-powered electric vehicle (CBEV). Zero tailpipe emissions might lead to the assumption that such an ICE-to-BEV conversion will always yield net positive environmental benefits in life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy reductions, but energy inputs and materials impacts associated with the conversion of a CBEV are weighed against savings during post-conversion usage. It was found that conversion would reduce the life cycle energy consumed and emissions produced of a typical motorcycle by 72% and 45% respectively. These findings have important considerations for the current global transportation landscape. © 2013 IEEE.

This publication concentrates on the production of a serious game on Microsoft's XNA Studio, which illustrates both the potential of a cost-efficient, off-the-shelf development platform itself for programmers of a medium skillset (such as for example educators) but also the possibilities of designing to completion a fully functional game that can be used as part of secondary education chemistry curriculums in order to teach the important topic of the periodic table of elements. Additionally, a 15-subject pilot evaluation study of the game (titled Elemental) is included, which displays initial evidence that there can be educational benefits for the experiment participants exposed to the work. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Studies on texture and microstructure evolution in hot extruded Al 6061 aluminium alloy reinforced with uncoated and nickel coated SiC p were carried out by electron backscattered diffraction *** of both the alloy and its composite with nickel coated SiC p do exhibit strong β fiber with its axis parallel to the direction of *** addition to the dominant cube texture（001） 100,fully recrystallized grains with partially equiaxed structure have been observed in the alloy reinforced with uncoated SiC *** recrystallization texture of this composite can be attributed to the particle stimulated nucleation（PSN） due to the presence of SiC p with size less than 5 μ*** these conditions,the low value of Zener-Hollomon,Z（～1012s-1） confirms that PSN is one of the dominant mechanisms for recrystallization and is governed by formation of deformation zone rather than stored energy.

Drug discovery relies much on data processing. Virtual screening (VS) is a typical method of drug discovery that exploits chemical structures (molecules) to identify those that are likely to bind to a particular drug target. VS can be turned into either a matching or a classification problem where the quality of the data matters very much. The number of features (and their properties) and data imbalance are general problems of chemical datasets used in VS. This paper investigates how to deal with these two problems to enhance the accuracy of VS and specifically to reduce the false positive rate. On one hand, we use the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) as a technique to balance data and on the other hand we investigate different molecular descriptors and fingerprints to serve as features. A classification approach is used to assess the performance of four chosen classifiers first individually and then by combining them. As an alternative an instance-based approach is employed to observe the effect on accuracy. Results from the classification method show that a higher accuracy and a lower false positive rate can be achieved by initially balancing the datasets using SMOTE and then classifying them. The effects of descriptors and fingerprints on accuracy and false positive rates can only be discussed for each dataset separately. Combining distance matrices of different structural fingerprints does not cause active and similar compounds to appear at the top of the dissimilarity ranking.
