Testing web-based software infrastructures is challenging. The need to interact with different services running on different devices, with different expectations for security and privacy contributes not only to the complexity of the infrastructure, but also to the approaches necessary to test it. Moreover, as large-scale systems, such infrastructures may be developed by distributed teams simultaneously making changes to APIs and critical components that implement them. In this paper, we describe our experiences testing one such infrastructure - the webinos software platform - and the lessons learned tackling the challenges faced. While ultimately these challenges were impossible to overcome, this paper explores the techniques that worked most effectively and makes recommendations for developers and teams in similar situations. In particular, our experiences with continuous integration and automated testing processes are described and analysed. © 2013 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

This study explores the environmental impact of the conversion of an internal combustion engine (ICE) sports motorcycle into a converted battery-powered electric vehicle (CBEV). Zero tailpipe emissions might lead to the assumption that such an ICE-to-BEV conversion will always yield net positive environmental benefits in life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy reductions, but energy inputs and materials impacts associated with the conversion of a CBEV are weighed against savings during post-conversion usage. It was found that conversion would reduce the life cycle energy consumed and emissions produced of a typical motorcycle by 72% and 45% respectively. These findings have important considerations for the current global transportation landscape.

A combination of classifiers leads to a substantial reduction of classification errors in a wide range of applications. Among them, support vector machine (SVM) ensembles with bagging have shown better performance in classification than a single SVM. However, the training process of SVM ensembles is notably computationally intensive, especially when the number of replicated training datasets is large. This paper presents MRESVM, a MapReduce-based distributed SVM ensemble algorithm for scalable image annotation which re-samples the training dataset based on bootstrapping and trains an SVM on each dataset in parallel using a cluster of computers. A balanced sampling strategy for bootstrapping is introduced to increase the classification accuracy. MRESVM is evaluated in both experimental and simulation environments, and the results show that the MRESVM algorithm reduces the training time significantly while achieving a high level of accuracy in classifications. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Despite many research developments in agent platforms during the last two decades, little effort has been dedicated to real-time multi-agent architectures. This paper focuses on the possibility of implementing hybrid agent platforms in full compliance with Real Time Specification for Java and with JADE, a popular middleware based on the agent paradigm. Our approach offers several advantages: it is less sensitive to time fluctuations in thread synchronization, it is FIPA compliant, requires relatively little changes in existing architectures and it may be integrated without much trouble in large Java-based distributed applications. Two reference scenarios - the 'dummy' threads and real-time agent execution - are taken into account. For this purpose, an autonomous vehicle system was developed. The average time delay between agents (threads) behaviour execution is determined as a performance index. This work investigates the effect of different platforms and capacity.

With rapid development of Internet of things (IoT), there exists an ever-growing demand for ubiquitous connectivity to integrate multiple heterogeneous networks, such as Zigbee Ad hoc network, wireless LAN, cable network, etc. Some typical applications including environmental monitoring, intelligent transportation, medical care, smart home, industry control, safety defense, etc. require a smart gateway to provide high data-rate, end-to-end connectivity utilizing the higher bandwidth of multi-hop networks among those heterogeneous networks. This paper proposes a novel configurable smart IoT gateway which has three important benefits. Firstly, the gateway has plug gable architecture, whose modules with different communication protocols can be customized and plugged in according to different networks. Secondly, it has unified external interfaces which are fit for flexible software development. Finally, it has flexible protocol to translate different sensor data into a uniform format. Compared with similar research, the gateway has better scalability, flexibility and lower cost.

The organizational shift from local to global settings in many software development initiatives has triggered the need for entailing it when educating the future software engineers. Several educational institutions have embraced this need and started collaborating for the provision of global software engineering courses. The rather complex nature of such courses results in a wider range of risks, in comparison to standard software engineering courses, that arise in different dimensions, ranging from course-to result-related, and for different reasons. In this work we provide an assessment of such a variety of risks as well as their causes, and we give a hint on how they may affect each other based on our 10-year-long experience with a tightly integrated GSD course.

This paper presents a technique for analysis of dynamic contact networks aimed at extracting periods of time during which the network changes behaviour. The technique is based on tracking the eigenvectors of the contact network in time (efficiently) using a technique called Joint Diagonalisation (JD). Repeated application of JD then shows that real-world networks naturally break into several modes of operation which are time dependent and in one real-world case, even periodic. This shows that a view of real-world contact networks as realisations from a single underlying static graph is mistaken. However, the analysis also shows that a small finite set of underlying static graphs can approximate the dynamic contact graphs *** also provide the means by which these underlying approximate graphs can be constructed. Core to the approach is the analysis of spanning trees constructed on the contact network. These trees are the routes a broadcast would take given a random starting location and we find that these propagation paths (in terms of their eigenvector decompositions) cluster into a small subset of modes which surprisingly correspond to clusters in time. The net result is that a dynamic network may be approximated as a (small finite) set of static graphs. Most interestingly the MIT dataset shows a periodic behaviour which allows us to know in advance which mode the network will be in. This has obvious consequences as individuals in the network take differing roles in differing modes. Finally, we demonstrate the technique by constructing a synthetic network with an 4 underlying modes of operation; creating synthetics contacts and then used JD to extract the original underlying modes.

Requirements engineering research is undertaken to propose innovative solutions, to develop concepts, algorithms, processes, and technologies, to validate effective solutions for important requirements-related problems, and ultimately to support the transition of important findings to practice. However prior studies have shown that successful projects often take from 20-25 years to reach the stage of full industry adoption, while many other projects fizzle out and never advance beyond the initial research phase. This panel provides the opportunity for practitioners and academics to engage in a meaningful discussion around the topic of technology transfer. In this third offering of the Ready-Set-Transfer panel, three research groups will present products that they believe to be industry-ready to a panel of industrial practitioners. Each team will receive feedback from the panelists. The long-term goal of the panel is to increase technology transfer in the requirements engineering domain.

In several cases, the spectral properties of objects change and depend on the viewing angle. Some example of this kind of samples can be found in the printing industry where special effect coatings are used to obtain some effects on the surface of the printed media. This effect can be an additional gloss and even an effect of a color change with the viewing angle (goniochromism). To be colorimetrically characterized these samples require multiangular reflectance measurements. In this paper we represent reflectance recovery results for these coated samples using regression models and RGB measurements from multiple camera capture angles. The estimations are performed using 3-dimensional and 9-dimensional RGB data. We evaluated the differences in estimation performance for the chosen three angles by using standard color and spectral metrics and compared the recovery with 3-dimensional and 9-dimensional RGB data. © 2013 IEEE.

The demand and expectations for manufactured products continues to grow whilst the level of technology employed in their design becoming more sophisticated and critical. As a result, in educating young designers the education philosophy employed in teaching product design demands an input from both technological and humanistic perspectives. design demands compromise and only when due consideration is made to all relevant areas leading to optimal decisions being taken will good design result. It is imperative that engineering design students not only learn the importance of this but adopt into their design activities such a philosophy as second nature. design output may be considered as delivering a "specification to manufacture" and accurate communication is imperative for all down-stream activities to occur. With a foundation in mathematics and sciences, the subject of technology is often shunned if not feared by design students. The challenge is to encourage and nurture appropriate skills and knowledge to enable development of the designers to meet future design industries demands. This paper discusses a project based teaching approach employing input from cross discipline sources that culminates in a major design activity in the students final year. Experience and benefits gained are described with particular emphasis being given to the way hard technology is integrated with human requirements and sociological considerations to enable optimal design decisions to be made.
