Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation plays an important role to adaptive modulation in Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (eMBMS). Based on the knowledge that the received signal space consists of signal subspace and noise subspace, we propose a subspace-based SNR estimation solution to cope with the time-varying channel with frequency selective effect and different OFDM pilot structure situations in eMBMS. The simulation is carried out on both PC and Aeroflex PXI platform. Simulation results show this proposed method gives good performance with different eMBMS pilot length and time-varying channels.

The use of virtual cluster for High Performance computing (HPC) work has a great benefit of hiding the complexity of physical infrastructure while providing a familiar HPC environment for users. Nevertheless, setting up one is still a challenging task for most users. In addition, the ability to span a virtual cluster across a multi-site cloud can even create a great potential for users to harness a much higher processing power from the cloud. In this paper, the development of a multi-site virtual cluster cloud is presented. This is done by providing the cloud infrastructures tailored specifically for virtual cluster deployment along with related utilities such as web-interface monitor and command line tools. To realize this infrastructure, an overlay network is created using Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology to merge every site into a single broadcast domain. Moreover, a Multi-tier VPN network topology is proposed to enhance the communication performance among the multi-site cloud. A smart virtual machine scheduling mechanism is introduced to reduce performance degradation caused by network delays. The experimental results show that the virtual cluster works well with highly parallel task with low communication among task. Thus, this technology can be used to support many classes of important HPC applications.

Ribbed cylindrical Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) tanks are currently designed using simplified theory the results of which are then verified by extensive destructive testing. This approach is expensive and can only generate non-optimal design solutions. In addition, there is often a high degree of discrepancy between theoretical and experimental results which necessitates the use of undesirably high factors of safety, which in turn results in the excessive use of material with the concomitant increase in cost, weight and manufacturing time. The primary aim of this investigative research was to develop a more deterministic and accurate design method of predicting the structural integrity and performance of underground cylindrical GRP tanks using non-destructive testing. Linear and non-linear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques, validated against experimental results, were used to analyze a large number of underground ribbed cylindrical GRP tanks. The outcome of which was then expressed in the form of an empirical 'design Formula' which provides a comprehensive solution to ribbed cylindrical GRP tank design for a wide range of tank sizes, laminate lay-ups and material properties. It is intended that the application of this method will eliminate the need for the expensive field tests that are currently required by design codes and standards. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

A semi-analytical approach for analysis of laminated plates with general boundary conditions under a general distribution of loads is developed. The non-linear equations are solved by the Newton-Kantorovich-Quadrature (NKQ) method which is a combination of well-known Newton-Kantorovich method and the Quadrature method. This method attempts to solve a sequence of linear integral equations. In this paper this method is used to propose a semi-analytical model for buckling of laminated plates. The convergence of the proposed method is investigated and the validation of the method is explored through numerical examples and the results compared with finite element method (FEM). There is a good agreement between the NKQ model and FEM results. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

A multivariate, robust, rational interpolation method for propagating uncertainties in several dimensions is presented. The algorithm for selecting numerator and denominator polynomial orders is based on recent work that uses a singular value decomposition approach. In this paper we extend this algorithm to higher dimensions and demonstrate its efficacy in terms of convergence and accuracy, both as a method for response suface generation and interpolation. To obtain stable approximants for continuous functions, we use an L2 error norm indicator to rank optimal numerator and denominator solutions. For discontinous functions, a second criterion setting an upper limit on the approximant value is employed. Analytical examples demonstrate that, for the same stencil, rational methods can yield more rapid convergence compared to pseudospectral or collocation approaches for certain problems.

A facile strategy to prepare MoS 2 –MoO 3 hybrid nanomaterials is developed, based on the heat‐assisted partial oxidation of lithium‐exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheets in air followed by thermal‐annealing‐driven crystallization. The obtained MoS 2 –MoO 3 hybrid nanomaterial exhibits p‐type conductivity. As a proof‐of‐concept application, an n‐type SiC/p‐type MoS 2 –MoO 3 heterojunction is used as the active layer for light‐emitting diodes. The origins of the electroluminescence from the device are theoretically investigated. This facile synthesis and application of hybrid nanomaterials opens up avenues to develop new advanced materials for various functional applications, such as in electrics, optoelectronics, clean energy, and information storage.

In a competitive environment where academic institutions are under pressure to develop employable graduates, the quality of education has become a crucial differentiator. Hence, a major pragmatic motivation for this article was to be able to improve the quality of education: in particular, to improve the course design and delivery processes of one of the postgraduate programs within an Egyptian higher education institution. This improvement was achieved using process modeling approaches; a mixture of hard and soft modeling techniques were applied, and a case study approach was used to analyze findings both with respect to the utility of tools and the process improvement itself. Lessons learned led to suggestions for the best ways of combing approaches which included a ‘novel’ hybrid RAD-SSM model being suggested. This combined approach promises to be useful for analyzing different processes and identifying possible areas for improving educational processes.

This paper provides a study of the main stator thermal barrier of an inner-rotor cylindrical brushless permanent magnet (BPM) synchronous servomotor with a concentrated winding configuration. Operating synchronous servomotors over continuous periods requires efficient thermal distribution of heat within the motor and also efficient dissipation of heat away from the motor. This is necessary to ensure that motors are running at cooler temperatures and hence provide optimum overall performance and better operating characteristics. Problems which may result if this is not achieved include demagnetising of the permanent magnets, burn-out of the windings, localised hot-spots and a consequent reduction in the operating life of the motor. Optimum performance and high efficiency requires investigation of the numerous machine parameters which necessitates a model that can be used to interpret how the characteristics interact and affect the output performance. The two motors used for this investigation were 12/10 slot/pole servomotors with concentrated winding configurations. Each servomotor was loaded and run up to the winding reference temperature at different speeds. The temperatures of the motor body parts for different wall insulation papers were recorded and compared with predicted values obtained from data using Motor-CAD software and an analytical model. Analysis and test results have been provided of the servomotor performance and thermal conductivity for two different main wall insulation materials.

Urban regeneration (DR) projects involve a crucial decision-making process that contains a great amount of quantitative and qualitative data including socio-economic processes, policies, expert judgments, stakeholders' opinions, etc. A number of authorities and research studies have used different decision support techniques including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to approach urban planning decision problems. However, how to handle the uncertainty and incompleteness of information related with many aspects of the UR decision problem is still a challenge issue to be solved. A belief rule-base inference methodology (RIMER) has been recently proposed to handle the uncertainty and incompleteness and incorporate both qualitative and quantitative data within the human decision making procedure. This paper presents an application of the extended RIMER (called RIMER+) to address UR decision problem, where the detailed sensitivity analysis of RIMER+ performance for predicting deprivation measures of the Greater Belfast Region is given by varying the uncertainty and incompleteness levels of the inputs of the system. These case studies are based on real practical data of the Greater Belfast Region in UK. The results demonstrate the positive performance of the RIMER+ method to provide valid and supportive evaluation results, and at the same time to measure the incompleteness and uncertainty range as a reflection of reality as additional support information to help decision making. These positive results indicate that RIMER+ can provide a well-established base to implement further research with combination with GIS to tackle the UR decision problem. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents the design and implementation of distributed arithmetic (DA) architectures of three-dimensional (3-D) Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) with hybrid method for medical image compression. Due to the separability property of the multi-dimensional Haar and Daubechies, the proposed architecture has been implemented using a cascade of three N-point one-dimensional (1-D) Haar/Daubechies and two transpose memories for a 3-D volume of N×N×N, suitable for 3-D medical imaging applications. The architectures were synthesised using VHDL and G-code and implemented on field programmable gate array (FPGA) single board RIO (sbRIO-9632) with Spartan-3 (XC3S2000). Experimental results and an analysis of the area, power consumption, maximum frequency, latency, throughput as well as the subjective test are discussed in this paper.
