This paper presents a modified fuzzy TOPSIS method with a new distance measurement and a fuzzy majority opinion aggregator for a multi criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. The rating of each alternative and the weight of each criterion is described by linguistic terms which can be expressed in triangular fuzzy numbers. We introduce a new distance metric by using graded mean integration representation of triangular fuzzy numbers. The concept of majority opinion gives an overall opinion which synthesizes the opinions of the majority of the decision makers. Fuzzy majority opinion aggregator is used to make a consensual judgment synthesizing the individual opinions. To clarify our proposed method, a numerical example is discussed. Results show that our proposed algorithm is more advantageous in reflecting opinions of the majority of decision makers and also provides more confidence for their decisions. © 2011 AmirKabir Univ of Tech.

Failures and uncertainties of current sensors are key issues in states and parameters estimation of Induction motors. In this paper, an EKF equipped with Output Augmented Fusion method (OAF) is used to design a new observer for dominance over these challenges. The proposed observer has the ability of speed estimation in a wide range with less sensitivity to parameters' variations and also failures and uncertainties of current sensors. An EKF is employed to estimate speed as a dynamic state variable over wide range of variation, using extension of states vector with equation of motion and other major parameters consisted of stator/rotor resistances and load torque. Moreover, using OAF algorithm, output matrices are extended to overcome failure probability and uncertainties of current sensors. The effectiveness of this approach is validated by simulation.

Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) is a new mechanism of contrast generation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which differentiates molecule biomarkers via chemical shift. CEST MRI contrast mechanism is complex and depends on radio frequency (RF) pulses used in experimental conditions. To find the optimal RF pulse, numerical solutions of Bloch-McConnell equations may be used. The purpose of this work is to compare the effects of different RF pulses on the CEST phenomenon. First, a two-pool exchange model for CEST in MRI is used. Z-spectra and signal calculations for the two-pool model have been carried out for some RF pulses. Efficiency of both continuous and binomial RF pulses is investigated by calculating three parameters, namely: CEST image contrast, flip angle and specific absorption ratio (SAR). The contrast of CEST image is considered proportional to amount of saturation. As a binomial RF pulse, WALTZ-16* demonstrates a good efficiency, but generates some unwanted direct saturations. On the other hand, continuous RF pulses do not create any unwanted direct saturation, but have less efficiency.

In this paper, a biologically inspired controller is proposed for desynchronization of two coupled limit-cycle oscillators. Recently, researchers have shown that astrocyte has the potential to desynchronize the synchrony between two coupled neurons. So, first, based on the astrocyte model, the structure of the dynamic controller is suggested. Then, controller parameters are tuned through an optimization algorithm. The suggested controller has 3 important properties: 1) the controller desynchronizes the oscillators without any undesirable effects on the inherent behavior of oscillators (e.g. stopping, annihilating or starting divergent oscillations);2) it requires little effort to maintain the desirable desynchronized state;and 3) the controller is robust with respect to parameters variations. Simulation results reveal the efficiency of the proposed controller. © 2011 IEEE.

Most current search engines return a ranked list of results in response to the user's query. This simple approach may require the user to go through a long list of results to find the documents related to his information need. A common alternative is to cluster the search results and allow the user to browse the clusters, but this also imposes two challenges: 'how to define the clusters' and 'how to label the clusters in an informative way'. In this study, we propose an approach which uses Wikipedia as the source of information to organize the search results and addresses these two challenges. In response to a query, our method extracts a hierarchy of categories from Wikipedia pages and trains classifiers using web pages related to these categories. The search results are organized in the extracted hierarchy using the learned classifiers. Experiment results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We earlier introduced a novel framework for realization of Adaptive Autonomy (AA) in human-automation interaction (HAI). This study presents an expert system for realization of AA, using Support Vector Machine (SVM), referred to as Adaptive Autonomy Support Vector Machine Expert System (AASVMES). The proposed system prescribes proper Levels of Automation (LOAs) for various environmental conditions, here modeled as Performance Shaping Factors (PSFs), based on the extracted rules from the experts' judgments. SVM is used as an expert system inference engine. The practical list of PSFs and the judgments of GTEDC's (the Greater Tehran Electric Distribution Company) experts are used as expert system database. The results of implemented AASVMES in response to GTEDC's network are evaluated against the GTEDC experts' judgment. Evaluations show that AASVMES has the ability to predict the proper LOA for GTEDC's Utility Management Automation (UMA) system, which changes in relevance to the changes in PSFs; thus providing an adaptive LOA scheme for UMA.

In rapid quadruped animals, the flexibility of spine is obviously observable while running. In this paper, we introduce a 3D passive dynamic quadruped robot, Fanari, that is capable to gallop down a slope without any external energy. We study the effect of spine flexibility on improvement of stability, adaptability and achievement of rapid leg locomotion. So a flexible spine that is capable to bend both outward and downward, a flexible spine that is only capable to bend outward and a rigid spine are designed and tested on the robot. Based on the case studies, we discuss about the challenges and the roles of spine stiffness on the gallop action. A simulation model is also made in order to corroborate the experimental results of the robot. It is concluded that the robot with the spine that is flexible in both outward and downward directions, has the most stability, adaptability and fastest velocity in its gallop action.

Recommender systems have become significant tools in electronic commerce, proposing effectively those items that best meet the preferences of users. A variety of techniques have been proposed for the recommender systems such as, collaborative filtering and content-based filtering. This study proposes a new hybrid recommender system that focuses on improving the performance under the "new user cold-start" condition where existence of users with no ratings or with only a small number of ratings is probable. In this method, the optimistic exponential type of ordered weighted averaging (OWA) operator is applied to fuse the output of five recommender system strategies. Experiments using MovieLens dataset show the superiority of the proposed hybrid approach in the cold-start conditions. © 2010 IEEE.

Acquiring new customers in any business is much more expensive than trying to keep the existing ones. As a result, many prediction algorithms have been proposed to detect churning customers. In this paper, the ordered weighted averaging (OWA) technique is brought to the attention of marketing researchers. We have applied OWA technique to improve the prediction accuracy of existing churn management systems. The decision lists of underlying prediction algorithms have been fused using OWA algorithm. Applied to the database of a telecommunication company, this method is found to significantly improve accuracy in predicting churn compared to the best existing result in the literature of the churn management. Our findings lead us to believe that using OWA technique could cause to increase profit for the companies. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper a comparison for non-adaptive and adaptive traffic state estimators based on the nonlinear macroscopic traffic flow model is presented. In non-adaptive estimator, a Least Square based method was used to estimate model parameters with off-line data. Beside this non-adaptive estimator, three adaptive estimators were designed and tested. In these adaptive estimators, online estimation of the model parameters were done based on Least Square, joint filtering and dual filtering methods. In all mentioned estimators, extended Kalman filtering method was used to estimate traffic variables. Finally, Real data testing results of these estimators for Interstate 494 in metro freeway, Minnesota, USA are presented.
