A wide variety of Galactic sources show transient emission at soft and hard X-ray energies: low- and high-mass X-ray binaries containing compact objects, isolated neutron stars exhibiting extreme variability as magnetars as well as pulsar-wind nebulae. Although most of them can show emission up to MeV and/or GeV energies, many have not yet been detected in the TeV domain by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of detecting new Galactic transients with the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) and the prospects for studying them with Target of Opportunity observations. We show that CTAO will likely detect new sources in the TeV regime, such as the massive microquasars in the Cygnus region, low-mass X-ray binaries with low-viewing angle, flaring emission from the Crab pulsar-wind nebula or other novae explosions, among others. Since some of these sources could also exhibit emission at larger time-scales, we additionally test their detectability at longer exposures. We finally discuss the multiwavelength synergies with other instruments and large astronomical facilities.

In this paper, we consider physical layer security in wireless communication networks in which a source (Alice) intends to send a confidential message to a legitimate destination (Bob) with the help of a cooperative jammer (CJ), in the presence of a passive eavesdropper (Eve). Assuming that only statistical channel state information (CSI) of Eve is available, artificial-noise (AN) assisted beamforming and cooperative jamming are designed. The goal is to maximize the secrecy rate, subject to a constraint on secrecy outage probability. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our scheme. Moreover, a higher secure energy efficiency (EE) can be achieved as compared with other schemes without a cooperative jammer.

Multi-level-cell (MLC) phase-change memory (PCM) provides higher storage density at the cost of slower reads and writes. Since reads are latency critical, this paper propose a simple and effective bit mapping scheme, called Mapping Critical Word to MSBs (MCWM), to address slow reads in MLC. MCWM takes advantage of fast read speed of most-significant-bits (MSBs) of MLC cells and strips a cache line among MLC cells at the bit level. Taking 2- bit MLC as an example, MCWM stores the first half of each cache line at most-significant-bits (MSBs) of MLC cells, and the second half at least-significant-bits (LSBs). This design leverages the observation that most critical words are located within the first half of a cache line. Upon a cache miss, the critical word can be fetched at the same speed as single-level cell (SLC) PCM, thus reducing processor stall time. Experimental results under 4-cores SPEC CPU 2006 workloads show that MCWM can reduce memory read latency by 27.5% and IPC by 13.7% on average, compared with conventional PCM. In addition, MCWM outperforms recently proposed Striped PCM (SPCM) by 12.5% in latency and 6.1% in IPC on average. Additionally, MCWM is complementary to write optimizations. MCWM can reduce read latency of Write Pause by 25% and increase IPC by 11.7% on average.

In this paper, based on the principle of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), a novel reversible data hiding scheme is presented. The to-be-embedded data are represented by different orthogonal spreading sequences and embedded into a cover image while degrading the image quality slightly. According to the feature of orthogonality, different spreading sequences are repeatedly embedded into the image without disturbing each other, and most elements of different spreading sequences are mutually cancelled in the process of multilevel data embedding. Thus, it keeps the distortion of the embedded image at a relatively low level even with a high embedding capacity. Moreover, the location-map of the proposed scheme can be highly compressed and thus the size is quite small;it further helps to obtain high net embedding capacity. Experimental results have demonstrated that the CDMA based reversible data hiding scheme can achieve higher image quality at the moderate-To-high embedding capacity than other state-of-The-Art reversible data hiding works. © 2016 ACM.

Fully depleted thick CCDs have been designed for infrared astronomy, but their low read-out noise of the order of ≈2e - and their considerable mass of ≈5.2 gr, allows novel uses for them in low energy threshold particle detection applications, such as the CONNIE and DAMIC experiments. For both experiments, a reduction of the CCD read-out noise is vital. In this work we present a method to measure the read-out noise coming from elec.ronic and non-elec.ronic sources. The impact of the external elec.ronics on the noise is discussed and its full characterization is presented.

Snoring is one of the major symptoms of Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) which is associated with serious health consequences. In recent years, speech-like analysis of snores has been performed towards an alterative to polysomnography (PSG) which is considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of OSAS. Human auditory perception has the ability to distinguish between different sounds. In this study, we propose a new method to extract snores from the sound recordings and characterize OSAS using auditory image model, which represents human auditory processing. Our proposed techniques resulted in a sensitivity of 98.4% and specificity of 94.06% for snore and non-snore classification and sensitivity of 85.00±26.87 at a specificity of 95.00±15.81 % for OSAS and non-OSAS classification. These results may indicate the feasibility of developing an OSAS population-screening tool based on automated analysis of non-contact snore.

Single-phase grid-connected inverter (GCI) is a kind of single-phase voltage source converter (VSC), and as the indispensable tie unit between different power supplies, it is widely used in the fields of wind generation and solar PV generation. In the paper, as first, on the basis of the concept of the discontinuous pulse-width modulation (DPWM) for three-phase VSI, a new DPWM of single-phase GCI is presented by means of zero-sequence component injection. Then, the transformation from stationary frame (abc) to rotating frame (dq) is designed after reconstructing the other orthogonal current by means of one order all-pass filter. Finally, the presented DPWM based single-phase GCI is established, analyzed and simulated by means of MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results show the validation of the above modulation algorithms, and the DPWM based single-phase GCR has reduced power loss and increased efficiency.

In many applications that employ wireless sensor networks (WSNs), robustness of distributed inference against Byzantine attacks is important. In this work, distributed inference is considered when local sensors send M-ary data to the fusion center. The optimal Byzantine attack policy is then derived under the assumption that the Byzantine adversary has the knowledge of the statistics of local quantization outputs. Our analysis indicates that the fusion center can be blinded such that the detection error is as poor as a random guess when an adequate fraction of sensors are compromised.

Existing representations of the Internet do not provide information on why countries have a bigger Internet presence (e.g., Internet Service Providers) than others. In this paper we evaluate four geo-economic parameters (area, population, GDP and GDP per capita), looking for clues of why some areas or countries have developed earlier/later, faster/slower than others. We use correlation studies to analyze which geo-economic variable leads to bigger development in the Internet infrastructure per continent, and cartograms to represent the growth of the Internet infrastructure around the world, in a sequence of 24 years. These representations make it possible to find interesting patterns and identify outliers. © The Eurographics Association 2015.

In this paper, we consider secure downlink transmission in two-cell networks where the one base station (Alice) provides secure wireless services to its legitimate receiver (Bob) in the presence of a passive eavesdropper (Eve). For multi-cell networks, the inter-cell interference to Bob and Eve has a great impact on the security performance. In order to improve the confidentiality of information transfer from Alice to Bob, it is crucial to properly design the transmit strategies. With the results of conventional cooperative jamming (CJ) scheme, we propose a modified CJ scheme for cooperative base station (CBS) to further degrade the quality of signal reception at Eve, and therefore the secrecy rate can be increased. Both theoretical analysis and numerical results show that the modified CJ scheme outperforms the conventional CJ scheme by achieving a higher secrecy rate. Additionally, by taking the energy efficiency into account, we formulate an adaptive cooperation, in which the CBS is allowed to provide services to its desired receiver. We design a cooperative beamforming for CBS to satisfy the rate requirement while maximizing the secrecy rate of legitimate channel. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed cooperation scheme. © 2015 IEEE.
