An effective content-based visual image retrieval system is presented. This system consists of two main components: visual content extraction and indexing, and query engine. Each image in the image database is represented by its visual features: color and spatial information. The system uses a color label histogram with only thirteen bins to extract the color information from an image in the image database. A unique unsupervised segmentation algorithm combined with the wavelet technique generates the spatial feature of an image automatically. The resulting feature vectors are relatively low in dimensions compared to those in other systems. The query engine employs a color filter and a spatial filter to dramatically reduce the search range. As a result, queue processing is speeded up. The experimental results demonstrate that our system is capable of retrieving images that belong to the same category.

An abstract multimedia semantic model called the multimedia augmented transition network (MATN) model is proposed to model the RTSP-based (real-time streaming protocol) multimedia presentation systems. RTSP provides a set of methods to support the functionality of "VCR-like" remote control on the client side so that users are allowed to control playback of the streaming media. The MATN model is used to model RTSP actions as well as temporal relations and synchronization control of the media streams. The advantages of using the MATN model are its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of modification. Furthermore, a formal definition of the MATN model and modeling of RTSP actions using the MATN model are presented in detail.

Investigates the modeling of the intra-run trials within auditory event-related fMRI experiments. Building upon previously accepted techniques and models, a new, less rigid model is presented that allows for the estimation of the hemodynamic response across a much larger set of timepoints. This is accomplished by avoiding the reduction of timepoints that occurs when using trial averaging techniques. Instead, variations between trials are incorporated into a new model while still preserving the general characteristics of the response. The addition of a trial-dependent proportionality factor in the model significantly increases the accuracy of the coefficients estimated through a nonlinear least squares regression.

In order to manage the growing amount of video information efficiently, a video scene change detection method is necessary. Many advanced video applications such as video on demand (VOD) and digital library also require the scene change detection to organize the video content. In this paper, we present an effective scene change detection method using an unsupervised segmentation algorithm and the technique of object tracking based on the results of the segmentation. Our results have shown that this method can perform not only accurate scene change detection, but also obtain object level information of the video frames, which is very useful for video content indexing and analysis.

Efficient utilization of network resources is essential in the provision of quality multimedia services. Different approaches have been proposed to shape the multimedia streams as a transmission schedule with smoothed traffic burst. In this paper, we concentrate on the problem of efficient use of bandwidth and client buffer. For this purpose, an optimal transmission schedule is proposed to provide the minimal allocation of the bandwidth and maximal utilization of the client buffer. Simulation results show that the shaping results obtained can dynamically adjust the transmission rate according to the buffer packet sizes and playback rates at the client to avoid the loss of packets, and at the same time achieve the minimal bandwidth allocation and maximal utilization of the client buffer.

This paper reports experimental research undertaken to study the effect of variation of inter-electrode distance on the electromyogram (EMG). The experiments were conducted on ten healthy subjects and they performed isometric contraction of their biceps of the right arm at 20, 50 and 80% of their maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). EMG was recorded using surface electrodes with the distance between the two active electrodes being 18 and 36mm. It has been observed that at low levels of muscle contraction there was no significant variation due to the change in the distance between the electrodes while at 50 and 80% of MVC there was a significant change in the amplitude of the EMG. Using time-frequency analysis of EMG, the study demonstrates a variation of the spectral content of the EMG with change in the IED. The study also has shown that there is a variation of the EMG with muscle contraction but that the comparison should be done if the distance between the electrodes has been kept constant.

The identification of the overlapped objects is a great challenge in object tracking and video data indexing. For this purpose, a backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm is proposed to assist an unsupervised video segmentation method called the "simultaneous partition and class parameter estimation" (SPCPE) algorithm to identify the overlapped objects in the video sequence. The backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm can identify the split segment (object) and use the information in the current frame to update the previous frames in a backtrack-chain manner. The split algorithm provides more accurate temporal and spatial information of the semantic objects so that the semantic objects can be indexed and modeled by multimedia input strings and the multimedia augmented transition network (MATN) model. The MATN model is based on the ATN model that has been used in artificial intelligence (AI) areas for natural language understanding systems, and its inputs are modeled by the multimedia input strings. In this paper, we will show that the SPCPE algorithm together with the backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm can significantly enhance the efficiency of spatio-temporal video indexing by improving the accuracy of multimedia database queries related to semantic objects.
