A modulator neural network architecture for inverse kinematics model learning

In order to reach an object, we need to solve the inverse kinematics problem, i.e., the coordinate transformation from the visual coordinates to the joint angle vector of the arm. The learning of the inverse kinematics model for calculating every joint angle that would result in a specific hand position is important. However, the inverse kinematics function of the human arm is a multi-valued and discontinuous function. It is difficult for a well-known continuous neural network to approximate such a function. In order to overcome the discontinuity of the inverse kinematics function, a novel modular neural network architecture is proposed in this paper. © 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Flat-topped intensity profile, high repetition rate pulse bursts have been demonstrated from a specially designed AWG and a single short pulse source laser. The key requirement is that the free spectral range of the device must be tailored so that multiple filter passbands fit within the input laser bandwidth. The unique properties of this device allow generation of identical, wavelength shifted, very high rate pulse trains for hybrid TDM/WDM communications and photonic signal processing. When applied to a high-repetition rate modelocked source (>10 GHz), these devices could lead to continuous very-high repetition rate output trains (>500 GHz). Furthermore, the simultaneous generation of multiple, slightly wavelength shifted pulse trains can be exploited to obtain new functionalities.

The residents of rural and regional Australia have less access to health care services than in capital cities. There is a reluctance of General Practitioners to practice in the country. New information technology and government initiatives are now addressing this problem. High bandwidth videoconferencing is now being routinely used to provide psychiatric consultations to areas without this service. But this (like many other implementations of telecommunication technologies to health) has resulted in loss of revenue to regional Australia while benefiting capital cities. Thus, the current implementation of telecommunication technology to health has resulted in loss of revenue of the regions while increasing the bias towards the cities. Further, the system is not economically viable and requires the Government to inject funds for the smooth operation of the system. This paper proposes the use of telecommunication technology for enabling the communities of regional Australia to access health facilities via physical and virtual clinics. The proposed technique is self supporting and is based in the country with the intent to prevent the drain of resources from regional Australia. The technique attempts to eradicate the problem at the root level by providing a business opportunity that is based in and to cater for the needs of the remote communities. The proposed system would provide health services by physical and virtual clinics and while serving the communities would be profit centres- and thus attracting doctors and other resources to the remote communities.

Initial work has been performed on tailoring the output temporal profile to generate a flat-topped pulse train burst. When applied to a high-repetition rate mode-locked source (> 10 GHz), these -devices could lead to continuous very-high repetition rate output trains (>500 GHz).

It proposes a self supporting method of implementation of the service to the bush without draining the resources of regional Australia. It attempts to eradicate the problem at the roots level by attempting to provide commercial viability for GPs clinics in the bush. These clinics would provide the health services by physical and virtual clinics and thus will serve the communities as well make a profit.

A novel layered structure surface acoustic wave (layered SAW) transducer has been employed for an oxygen sensing application. It is a SiO/sub 2/(0.36 /spl mu/m)/ST-cut quartz crystal transducer. The dominant mode propagating in the transducer is a combination of Rayleigh and Love modes. Such a structure has the advantage of confining the acoustic wave energy to the top selective layer, which increases the sensitivity of the device. A TiO/sub 2/ thin film deposited by the sol-gel process has been used as the oxygen sensitive layer.

Love mode surface acoustic wave (SAW) transducers were designed and fabricated by depositing silicon dioxide on a ST-cut quartz crystal wafer using r.f. magnetron sputtering. Two different propagation directions have been investigated by aligning the SAW finger pattern along the x-axis propagation direction and the direction orthogonal to the x-axis of the ST-cut quartz crystal. The latter, in which the propagation mode is dominantly the Love mode, shows promising characteristics for use as a high frequency SAW transducer because of high acoustic wave propagation velocity and electromechanical coupling coefficient. Phase and group velocity, capacitance per unit length of electrodes, insertion loss and input admittance, of two transducers, with different alignments, have been measured and compared.

TiO/sub 2/ thin films doped with Fe have been prepared by using the sol-gel process on silicon substrates. A metal-organic precursor solution for coating silicon substrates was synthesized using a Ti alkoxide derivative iron salt and isopropanol as a solvent. Acetylacetone was used as an inhibitor of derivative iron hydrolysis-condensation reactions. The structure of the films was investigated by X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering analysis. The electrical characterization of the films is reported.

We describe a novel approach for designing network control algorithms that incorporate traffic models. Traffic models can be viewed as stochastic predictions about the future network state, and can be used to generate traces of potential future network behavior. Our approach is to use such traces to heuristically evaluate candidate control actions using a technique called hindsight optimization. In hindsight optimization, the finite-horizon "utility" achievable from a given system state is estimated by averaging estimates obtained from a number of traces starting at the state. For each trace, the utility value of the state is estimated by determining the optimal "hindsight control"-this is the control that would be applied by an optimal controller that somehow "knew" the whole trace beforehand-and then measuring the utility obtained under that control. Averaging over many samples then gives a simulation-based "hindsight-optimal" utility for the starting state that upper bounds the true utility value of the state. This technique for estimating state utility can then be used to select the control-simply select the control that gives the highest utility. Our hindsight-optimization approach to designing simulation-based control algorithms can be applied to a wide variety of network decision problems. We present empirical results showing effectiveness for two example control problems-multiclass scheduling and congestion control.
