We consider a stopping problem and its application to the decision-making process regarding the optimal timing of organ transplantation for individual patients. At each decision period, the patient state is inspected and a decision is made whether to transplant. If the organ is transplanted, the process terminates; otherwise, the process continues until a transplant happens or the patient dies. Under suitable conditions, we show that there exists a control limit optimal policy. We propose a smoothed perturbation analysis (SPA) estimator for the gradient of the total expected discounted reward with respect to the control limit. Moreover, we show that the SPA estimator is asymptotically unbiased.

In this paper we present a dynamic entropy generator based on the oscillator jitter, which uses a self-biasing technique to minimize process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) variations. The proposed circuit has the advantage of its intrinsic robustness due to self-biasing design, which eliminates the need of additional calibration steps and simplifies the circuit topology, with a negligible impact in area and power consumption. A frequency deviation below 15 % and a maximum jitter difference of 32 % under PVT variations, is obtained, in a 28 nm CMOS technology circuit prototype. For validation of the proposed circuit technique the IC prototype is compared with a standard ring oscillator and with traditional calibration techniques.

With the growing integration of inverter-based renewable energy sources, modern power systems face increasing challenges in maintaining grid strength across a wide frequency spectrum. Traditional indices, such as the short circuit ratio (SCR), primarily assess grid strength at the fundamental frequency, which is inadequate for evaluating the impact of dynamic, power electronics-based devices such as inverters on grid stability. This limitation poses significant risks to the performance and reliability of consumer electronics, which depend on a stable and robust grid connection for seamless operation across various frequencies. This paper proposes a comprehensive procedure to assess grid robustness using the grid strength impedance metric (GSIM), which analyzes system stability across all frequency ranges, particularly in the context of consumer electronics integration. Through detailed PSCAD-based simulations of the Jeju Island power grid, we extract frequency-dependent impedances and evaluate grid strength both with and without the connection of Grid-Following (GFL) inverters. The results demonstrate that while grid strength is high at the fundamental frequency, potential instability arises at higher frequencies, especially when inverter output is at its peak. These findings underscore the importance of robust, frequency-wide analysis to ensure the reliable operation of consumer electronics in modern power systems.

In this work, phase apodized silicon Bragg grating filters with varying sidewall ridge width and location were investigated, while the resonance wavelength, extinction ratio and rejection bandwidth can be tuned flexibly. The grating filters with a waveguide width of 500 nm and grating period of 400 nm were fabricated and characterized for a proof of concept. The presented sidewall ridge modulated apodized grating can be expected to have great application prospects for optical communications and semiconductor lasers.
