An architecture description language based on dynamic description logics for self-healing systems

As biological systems exhibit adaptation, healing and robustness in the face of changing environmental behavior, this paradigm has actuated research dealing with the concept of self-healing systems, which attempt to heal themselves in the sense of recovering from malicious attacks and rectifying of system faults. The goal of self-healing systems is to provide survivable systems that require high dependability, robustness, adaptability, and availability. Such systems maintain one or more models, whether external or internal, at run time as a basis for identifying problems and resolving them. This article describes an architectural description language, called ADML, which is being developed as a new formal language and/or conceptual model for representing evolving software architectures. The ADML embraces dynamic change as a fundamental consideration, supports a broad class of adaptive changes at the architectural level, and offers a uniform way to represent and reason about both static and dynamic aspects of self-healing systems. Because the ADML is based on the Dynamic Description Logic DDL(SHON (D)), which can represent both dynamic semantics and static semantics under a unified logical framework, architectural ontology entailment for the ADML languages can be reduced to knowledge base satisfiability in DDL(SHON (D)), and dynamic description logic algorithms and implementations can be used to provide reasoning services for ADML. In this article, we present the syntax of ADML, explain its underlying semantics using the Dynamic Description Logic DDL(SHON (D)), and exemplify our approach by applying it to the domain of load balancing a wireless remote-access system;the preliminary results certify the potential of the approach.

Recent years have witnessed the growing popularity of hashing in large-scale vision problems. It has been shown that the hashing quality could be boosted by leveraging supervised information into hash function learning. However, the existing supervised methods either lack adequate performance or often incur cumbersome model training. In this paper, we propose a novel kernel-based supervised hashing model which requires a limited amount of supervised information, i.e., similar and dissimilar data pairs, and a feasible training cost in achieving high quality hashing. The idea is to map the data to compact binary codes whose Hamming distances are minimized on similar pairs and simultaneously maximized on dissimilar pairs. Our approach is distinct from prior works by utilizing the equivalence between optimizing the code inner products and the Hamming distances. This enables us to sequentially and efficiently train the hash functions one bit at a time, yielding very short yet discriminative codes. We carry out extensive experiments on two image benchmarks with up to one million samples, demonstrating that our approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-arts in searching both metric distance neighbors and semantically similar neighbors, with accuracy gains ranging from 13% to 46%.

In this paper, a framework for a real-time wide area controller is established for damping small-signal instability related events in interconnected power systems. Offline designing is performed to design the centralized controller for each inter-area mode of the power system. Residue approach is used to select the most effective stabilizing signals and controller locations. Different constant time delays are taken into controller parameters design. Thus an offline controller database is formed, including different controllers of each mode. The parameters of each controller are different for various ranges of time delay. The damping and other mode information will be identified by online multi-Prony analysis. When an inter-area mode is detected with weak or negative damping, say less than 3%, the corresponding controller for the detected mode will be initiated and deployed for enhancing the damping of the problematic mode. The time delay, which is used to select a suitable set of parameters for a chosen controller, could be calculated online, using the time stamps of the actuator and feedback signal. The paper proposes the framework of the controller with preliminary discussions on the various components of the controller, including: 1) the offline controller database, 2) the online detection of undamped oscillations, and 3) the online corrective control actions at the actuator. The 4-machine 2-area case study results demonstrated the advantage of the proposed method.

Cascading dynamics on random networks: Crossover in phase transition

In a complex network, random initial attacks or failures can trigger subsequent failures in a cascading manner, which is effectively a phase transition. Recent works have demonstrated that in networks with interdependent links so that the failure of one node causes the immediate failures of all nodes connected to it by such links, both first- and second-order phase transitions can arise. Moreover, there is a crossover between the two types of transitions at a critical system-parameter value. We demonstrate that these phenomena can occur in the more general setting where no interdependent links are present. A heuristic theory is derived to estimate the crossover and phase-transition points, and a remarkable agreement with numerics is obtained.

In a number of types of documents, ranging from forms to archive documents and books with annotations, machine printed and handwritten text may be present in the same document image, giving rise to significant issues within a digitisation and recognition pipeline. It is therefore necessary to separate the two types of text before applying different recognition methodologies to each. In this paper, a new approach is proposed which strives towards identifying and separating handwritten from machine printed text using the Bag of Visual Words paradigm (BoVW). Initially, blocks of interest are detected in the document image. For each block, a descriptor is calculated based on the BoVW. The final characterization of the blocks as Handwritten, Machine Printed or Noise is made by a Support Vector Machine classifier. The promising performance of the proposed approach is shown by using a consistent evaluation methodology which couples meaningful measures along with a new dataset.

In order to capture a selective packaging mechanism among eight RNA segments in influenza A viruses, we assume that almost nucleotides in the positions of packaging signals must be simultaneously changed. In this paper, we formulate such positions as correlated mutations based on a joint entropy ratio, develop a method of finding all of them by using set enumeration with pruning and apply to nucleotide sequences among RNA segments in H3N2 influenza viruses.

Real-time patient monitoring data collected over the course of trauma care are often large in quantities and require systematic representation that can combined temporal reasoning and validated algorithms to support clinical decision making. Available continuous vital signs, in many cases result in few state changes in the temporal range of interest; this work applies validated systematic algorithms to a small set of vital signs data to identify patients at risk for mortality. Vital signs signals are used to train J48, naïve bayes, decision stump and SMO models. The InfoGain features selection algorithm was used to extract the best features using full run time-series data and feature generation permitted the features to be trained/tested on sensor data of any size, which dramatically improved the prediction classification of the J48 algorithm. The evaluation of the models were done using leave-one-out cross validation. The quality of the classification was determined by the accuracy, precision and recall. Results show that the J48 algorithm coupled with feature selection is a simple method for the identification of patients at increased risk for mortality in trauma care.

Optimizing controllability of complex networks by minimum structural perturbations

To drive a large, complex, networked dynamical system toward some desired state using as few external signals as possible is a fundamental issue in the emerging field of controlling complex networks. Optimal control is referred to the situation where such a network can be fully controlled using only one driving signal. We propose a general approach to optimizing the controllability of complex networks by judiciously perturbing the network structure. The principle of our perturbation method is validated theoretically and demonstrated numerically for homogeneous and heterogeneous random networks and for different types of real networks as well. The applicability of our method is discussed in terms of the relative costs of establishing links and imposing external controllers. Besides the practical usage of our approach, its implementation elucidates, interestingly, the intricate relationship between certain structural properties of the network and its controllability.

Two grading criteria used in determining shrimp product quality and value by the shrimp industry are: 1. Presence or percentage of black spot, measured as a percentage of the total body surface. 2. Shape quality referring to whole shrimp and broken pieces. Black spots (melanoma) on the shrimp surface are evidence of aging shrimp and are considered defects that must be removed from the main production line. Shape quality is measured as the size and the completeness of the body. Broken shrimp pieces are considered a product defect and also must be removed from the main production line. Black spot detection is a simple task for a well-designed machine vision system, which provides consistent and controlled lighting. Shape analysis, on the other hand, is a challenging task because it involves contour extraction and shape analysis. In this paper, a simple, fast, and accurate shape analysis method using Turn Angle Cross-correlation is developed for shrimp quality evaluation. Our analysis results validate that the performance of the proposed shape analysis method is suitable for real-time inspection for commercial applications.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution using thermal states

We consider the security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution using thermal (or noisy) Gaussian resource states. Specifically, we analyze this against collective Gaussian attacks using direct and reverse reconciliation where both protocols use either homodyne or heterodyne detection. We show that in the case of direct reconciliation with heterodyne detection, an improved robustness to channel noise is achieved when large amounts of preparation noise is added, as compared to the case when no preparation noise is added. We also consider the theoretical limit of infinite preparation noise and show a secure key can still be achieved in this limit provided the channel noise is less than the preparation noise. Finally, we consider the security of quantum key distribution at various electromagnetic wavelengths and derive an upper bound related to an entanglement-breaking eavesdropping attack and discuss the feasibility of microwave quantum key distribution.
