Evading Quantum Mechanics: engineering a Classical Subsystem within a Quantum Environment

Quantum mechanics is potentially advantageous for certain information-processing tasks, but its probabilistic nature and requirement of measurement backaction often limit the precision of conventional classical information-processing devices, such as sensors and atomic clocks. Here we show that, by engineering the dynamics of coupled quantum systems, it is possible to construct a subsystem that evades the measurement backaction of quantum mechanics, at all times of interest, and obeys any classical dynamics, linear or nonlinear, that we choose. We call such a system a quantum-mechanics-free subsystem (QMFS). All of the observables of a QMFS are quantum-nondemolition (QND) observables; moreover, they are dynamical QND observables, thus demolishing the widely held belief that QND observables are constants of motion. QMFSs point to a new strategy for designing classical information-processing devices in regimes where quantum noise is detrimental, unifying previous approaches that employ QND observables, backaction evasion, and quantum noise cancellation. Potential applications include gravitational-wave detection, optomechanical-force sensing, atomic magnetometry, and classical computing. Demonstrations of dynamical QMFSs include the generation of broadband squeezed light for use in interferometric gravitational-wave detection, experiments using entangled atomic-spin ensembles, and implementations of the quantum Toffoli gate.

The IEEE RAS Ontologies for Robotics and Automation Working Group is dedicated to developing a methodology for knowledge representation and reasoning in robotics and automation. As part of this working group, the Autonomous Robots sub-group is tasked with developing ontology modules for autonomous robots. This paper describes the work in progress on the development of ontologies for autonomous systems. For autonomous systems, the focus is on the cooperation, coordination, and communication of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The ontologies serve as a framework for working out concepts of employment with multiple vehicles for a variety of operational scenarios with emphasis on collaborative and cooperative missions.

This paper is devoted to the modeling problem of hypersonic vehicle with significant couplings. An integrated approach is developed to analytically model the dynamics of hypersonic vehicle, in which the effects of variable mass, spherical rotating earth, and couplings among the sub-models are considered. Furthermore, a preliminary analysis is conducted using the general data of a hypersonic vehicle. The simulation results show that the maximum of the Coriolis force can reach values up to 7.02% of the vehicle weight, and that the thermal load determined by the nonuniform aerodynamic heating and the properties of the structure has a significant influence on the elastic deformation.

In this paper, we discuss the threshold based stochastic resonance behavior of binary input, binary output discrete memoryless channels. We follow the basic model of Chapeau-Blondeau where he showed how the addition of external Gaussian noise could enhance channel capacity, thus providing an optimum channel capacity depending on both the threshold level and noise power of the system. In order to easily approximate channel capacity behavior, we use capacity bounds and approximations.

Titanium dioxide is a material widely used in electronics industry and little explored in the biomedical area, which is the objective of this work. Nowadays one can find surgical instruments coated with thin films that have bactericidal properties when they are activated in the presence of ultraviolet light. For crystalline phase control TiO2 was calcinated at 500°C. The crystallite mean size for sample calcinated at 500°C was 27nm. With the results of cytotoxicity it is possible to say that biomedical applications are possible. Electron microscopy images showed nanoparticles obtained by sol-gel process and the compounds were identified by FTIR analysis. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the existence of anatase titania phase and X-ray diffraction showed this material to be composed of a crystalline phase. X-ray fluorescence identified chemical contaminants. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications.

We present experimental results concerning a new alloptical technique that multiplexes two binary signals into a quaternary one (4-ASK). The technique is based on parametric amplification. Values of the quaternary levels obtained experimentally, as a function of the extinction ratios of the binary input signals, show a rather good agreement with the simulated and the analytical results. The generated 4-ASK signals were propagated through 75 km of standard single-mode fiber and experienced eye penalties of only 0.5 dB. This indicates the robustness of the technique for practical applications in metropolitan area networks. © 2012 SBMO/SBMag.

This paper investigates the nonlinear dynamics of network-based dynamical systems where network communication channels of finite data rates are inserted into the closed loops of the control systems. The authors analyze the bifurcation and chaotic behavior of the non-smooth dynamical systems. The authors first prove that for almost all system parameters there are no periodic orbits. This result distinguishes this type of non-smooth dynamical systems from many others exhibiting border-collision bifurcations. Next, the authors show analytically that the chaotic sets are separated from the region containing the line segment of all fixed points with a finite distance. Finally, the authors employ a simple model to highlight that both the number of clients sharing a common network channel and fluctuations in the available network bandwidth have significant influence on the performance of such dynamical systems.
