Despite extensive work on traffic dynamics and epidemic spreading on complex networks, the interplay between these two types of dynamical processes has not received adequate attention. We study the effect of local-routing-based traffic dynamics on epidemic spreading. For the case of unbounded node-delivery capacity, where the traffic is free of congestion, we obtain analytic and numerical results indicating that the epidemic threshold can be maximized by an optimal routing protocol. This means that epidemic spreading can be effectively controlled by local traffic dynamics. For the case of bounded delivery capacity, numerical results and qualitative arguments suggest that traffic congestion can suppress epidemic spreading. Our results provide quantitative insight into the nontrivial role of traffic dynamics associated with a local-routing scheme in the epidemic spreading.

Most existing works on transportation dynamics focus on networks of a fixed structure, but networks whose nodes are mobile have become widespread, such as cell-phone networks. We introduce a model to explore the basic physics of transportation on mobile networks. Of particular interest is the dependence of the throughput on the speed of agent movement and the communication range. Our computations reveal a hierarchical dependence for the former, while an algebraic power law is found between the throughput and the communication range with the exponent determined by the speed. We develop a physical theory based on the Fokker-Planck equation to explain these phenomena. Our findings provide insights into complex transportation dynamics arising commonly in natural and engineering systems.

We earlier introduced a novel framework for realization of Adaptive Autonomy (AA) in human-automation interaction (HAI). This study presents an expert system for realization of AA, using Support Vector Machine (SVM), referred to as Adaptive Autonomy Support Vector Machine Expert System (AASVMES). The proposed system prescribes proper Levels of Automation (LOAs) for various environmental conditions, here modeled as Performance Shaping Factors (PSFs), based on the extracted rules from the experts' judgments. SVM is used as an expert system inference engine. The practical list of PSFs and the judgments of GTEDC's (the Greater Tehran Electric Distribution Company) experts are used as expert system database. The results of implemented AASVMES in response to GTEDC's network are evaluated against the GTEDC experts' judgment. Evaluations show that AASVMES has the ability to predict the proper LOA for GTEDC's Utility Management Automation (UMA) system, which changes in relevance to the changes in PSFs; thus providing an adaptive LOA scheme for UMA.

Recently, it is a critical issue to make larger display panels with low costs in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, the uniformity and the cost of low temperature poly Si (LTPS) thin film transistors (TFTs) based backplanes for driving panels as well as the fine metal mask for pixel-patterning obstruct the realization of large-size OLED displays. To overcome these problems, using amorphous silicon (a-Si) TFTs which have high uniformity and cost-efficiency as the backplanes and white OLEDs (WOLEDs) which do not requiring any fine metal mask have been suggested previously. The inverted structure of OLEDs is much suitable rather than the conventional structure for a-Si TFTs because most a-Si TFTs have n-type channel. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient inverted bottom-emission WOLEDs by controlling the balance of electrons and holes injected from electrodes. The maximum external quantum efficiency (E.Q.E.) of inverted WOLEDs was increased from 6.4% to 8.6% (about 34% improvement). To the best of our knowledge, this value is the highest E.Q.E. without other optical light extraction techniques in inverted WOLEDs reported to date.
