We developed magnetically tunable plasmonic nanoparticles by synthesizing superparamagnetic core/metal nanoshell structured materials and studied their optical properties. These magnetically tunable plasmonic nanoparticles form a particle chain The plasmon coupling of these metal nanoshells can be changed dynamically and reversibly by a magnetic field and interparticle spacing of gold and silver nanoshells was controlled by strength of an applied magnetic field. These materials serve as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate and a plasmon ruler. Hot spots for SERS can be easily generated by applying a magnetic field and the enhancement factor can be tuned by magnetic field strength. © 2009 CBMS.

We demonstrate a well-ordered fluidic self-assembly of encoded particles with effective design of 3D microstructures using gray-scale optofluidic maskless lithography (G-OFML [1]). This microstructure design has 3D topology consists of hexagonal body for close packing on a given area and flow guiding fins for wellordered assembly. This well-ordered fluidic self assembly of our 3D microstructures is useful for read-out of particle based biochip due to its high density packing for high reading throughput and its periodic order for easy image processing. © 2009 CBMS.

We propose a single-exposure generation of free-standing 3D microstructure by vertically rotating photo-patterned top-view with the capillary force of liquid. Instead of expensive direct writing for cross-sectional patterning, we pattern the top-view of the structure using projection lithography and rotate the plane 90 degrees to stand vertically. As a result, high throughput fabrication of 3D polymeric microstructures is achieved in a cost-effective way.

We present the high-throughput fabrication technology of free-floating 3D microstructures combining gray-scale lithography [1] with optofluidic maskless lithography (OFML) [2]. We simultaneously modulated mask pattern in time phase using Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) in order to generate the different level of ultraviolet (UV) dose for photopolymerization, which causes to fabricate the different height of microstructure. The modulated UV pattern through mask was transferred to photocurable resin flowing through a microfluidic channel, as providing high-throughput production of free-floating 3D microstructures. © 2009 CBMS.

In recent years, evolutionary methods have shown great success in solving many combinatorial optimization problems such as FIR (Finite Impulse Response) filter design. An ordinary method in FIR filter design problem is Parks-McClellan, which is both difficult to implement and computationally expensive. The goal of this paper is to design a near optimal linear phase FIR filter using two recent evolutionary approaches;Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Harmony Search (HS). These methods are robust, easy to implement, and they would not trap in local optima due to their stochastic behavior. In addition, they have distinguishing features such as less variance error and smaller overshoots in both stop and pass bands. To prove these benefits, two case studies are presented and obtained results are compared with previous implementations. In both cases, better and reliable results are achieved. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Tandem white organic light emitting diodes (WOLEDs) are fabricated with blue and red unit devices connected by a transparent Al:LiF/molybdenum oxides (MoO3) connecting layer. The blue and red unit devices have been fabricated with standard structure based on 8 % iridium (III)bis(4,6-(di- fluorophenyl)-pyridinato-N,C2') picolinate (FIrpic) doped in N,N'-dicarbazolyl-3,5-benzene (mCP) and 8 % bis(1-phenylisoquinolinato-N,C 2 )iridium(acetylacetonate) ((piq)2Ir(acac)) doped in 4,4'-N,N'-dicarbazolebiphenyl (CBP), respectively. The doping concentration of LiF in the Al:LiF composite layer is 10 % and the Al:LiF layer thickness is varied from 3 nm up to 10 nm to optimize the performance of tandem WOLEDs while the MoO3 thickness is fixed at 10 nm. We found that electron injection efficiency decreases for thicker Al:LiF layer, resulting lower electroluminescence (EL) efficiency. The maximum brightness and current luminous efficiency for the tandem WOLEDs are about 32,230 cd/m2 and 18.5 cd/A, respectively, for the Al:LiF (10 %) thickness of 3 nm. © 2009 SPIE.

This paper presents an efficient immune symbiotic evolution learning (ISEL) algorithm for the compensatory neuro-fuzzy controller (CNFC). The proposed ISEL method includes three major components-initial population, subgroup symbiotic evolution, and immune system algorithm. First, the self-clustering algorithm that determines proper input space partitioning and finds the mean and variance of the Gaussian membership functions and number of rules is applied to the initial population. Second, the subgroup symbiotic evolution method that uses each subantibody represents a single fuzzy rule and the evolution of the rule itself. Third, the immune system algorithm uses the clonal selection principle, such that antibodies between others of high similar degree are canceled, and these antibodies, after processing, will have higher quality, accelerating the search, and increasing the global search capacity. Finally, the proposed CNFC with ISEL (CNFC-ISEL) method is adopted to solve several nonlinear control problems. The simulation results have shown that the proposed CNFC-ISEL can outperform other methods. © 2009 IEEE.

Color image histograms are very useful tools for content based image retrieval (CBIR) that can be applied on features such as colour, texture and shape. As these kinds of histograms results with large variations between neighbouring bins, they seem so sensitive to any kind of changes such as noise, illumination. To overcome this problem, in this paper, fuzzy linking histogram approach based on OWA aggregation operator is proposed , which is capable of projecting 3-dimensional (L*a*b*) colour histograms into single-dimension. The proposed method have been evaluated and compared with five other related methods in retrieving similar images from the common dataset which is available on http://***/∼konkonst. The experimental results on 100 images within two categories of Cat and Sky reveals better performance of the proposed method in comparison with the other mentioned methods. ©2009IEEE.

Background: In a recent study, two-dimensional (2D) network layouts were used to visualize and quantitatively analyze the relationship between chronic renal diseases and regulated genes. The results revealed complex relationships between disease type, gene specificity, and gene regulation type, which led to important insights about the underlying biological pathways. Here we describe an attempt to extend our understanding of these complex relationships by reanalyzing the data using three-dimensional (3D) network layouts, displayed through 2D and 3D viewing methods. Findings: The 3D network layout (displayed through the 3D viewing method) revealed that genes implicated in many diseases (non-specific genes) tended to be predominantly down-regulated, whereas genes regulated in a few diseases (disease-specific genes) tended to be up-regulated. This new global relationship was quantitatively validated through comparison to 1000 random permutations of networks of the same size and distribution. Our new finding appeared to be the result of using specific features of the 3D viewing method to analyze the 3D renal network. Conclusions: The global relationship between gene regulation and gene specificity is the first clue from human studies that there exist common mechanisms across several renal diseases, which suggest hypotheses for the underlying mechanisms. Furthermore, the study suggests hypotheses for why the 3D visualization helped to make salient a new regularity that was difficult to detect in 2D. Future research that tests these hypotheses should enable a more systematic understanding of when and how to use 3D network visualizations to reveal complex regularities in biological networks. © 2010 Bhavnani et al;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

We demonstrate conformal phosphor coating and patterning methods on light emitting diodes (LEDs) using image processing based optofluidic maskless lithography (IP-OFML) system in microfluidic channels. IP-OFML allows a real-time detection and dynamic mask generation for packaging of randomly dispersed microchips. Our system detects each chip by considering rotation of the chip through image processing regardless of their arrangement error. Therefore, it precisely packages the chip making conformal polymer layer. With the system, we present multilayer coating, selective layer packaging of silicon microchips, and conformal yellow phosphor coating on blue LED for uniform white light illumination considering top contacts opening. © 2009 CBMS.
