Healthy ears reflect OtoAcoustic Emission (OAE) signals in response to acoustic stimuli that can be recorded in the external ear canal. We can use the existence of this signal to check the health condition of hearing. Early diagnosis and treatment of hearing abnormalities of infants can save them from losing their hearing. In this paper we use a dataset which consists of OAE signals of subjects with normal and abnormal hearing. First fundamental features which are responsible for the existence of OAE are extracted from unlabeled data, and then Gustafson Kessel clustering Algorithm is applied to the feature space to classify them in two clusters. After that we allocate each labeled data to these clusters based on their distance from cluster centers. Finally we label each cluster based on majority voting rule for their nearest neighbors which are labeled. The best result is 96.6％ of accuracy that is achieved from executing the algorithm in 20 trials. Checking the health condition of hearing using OAE signals for experts usually is an error-prone diagnosis, thus to reach an accurate diagnosis, additional tests such as audiometry and tympanometry are commonly used. These tests are time consuming and costly. Reducing these disadvantages leads us to automate diagnosis as a supporting tool to help the experts.

In the design process of a reconfigurable accelerator employing in an embedded system, multitude parameters may result in remarkable complexity and a large design space. Design space exploration as an alternative to the quantitative approach can be employed to find a right balance between the different design parameters. In this paper, a hybrid approach is introduced to analytically explore the design space for a coarse grain accelerator and determine a wise design point exploiting data extracted from applications, quantitatively. It also provides flexibility for taking into account new design constraints as well as new characteristics of applications. Furthermore, this approach is a methodological approach which reduces the design time and results in a point which satisfies the design goals. ©2008 IEEE.

This paper introduces for the first time a novel flexible magnetic composite material for RF identification (RFID) and wearable RF antennas. First, one conformal RFID tag working at 480 MHz is designed and fabricated as a benchmarking prototype and the miniaturization concept is verified. Then, the impact of the material is thoroughly investigated using a hybrid method involving electromagnetic and statistical tools. Two separate statistical experiments are performed, one for the analysis of the impact of the relative permittivity and permeability of the proposed material and the other for the evaluation of the impact of the dielectric and magnetic loss on the antenna performance. Finally, the effect of the bending of the antenna is investigated, both on the S-parameters and on the radiation pattern. The successful implementation of the flexible magnetic composite material enables the significant miniaturization of RF passives and antennas in UHF frequency bands, especially when conformal modules that can be easily fine-tuned are required in critical biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. © 2006 IEEE.

Encyclopedias of regulatory genomic elements provide a foundation for research in areas such as disease diagnosis, disease treatment, and crop enhancement. The construction of complete encyclopedias of organism-specific genomic elements involved in gene regulation remains a significant challenge. To address this problem, the authors present novel bioinformatics strategies for exploring the word landscapes of putative regulatory regions of genomes. The methods are incorporated into the WordSeeker software tool, which is available at http://***. The effectiveness of these strategies is demonstrated through several case studies.

Academic education of engineers and natural scientists has to be adapted to today's social and economic needs. One of the goals of the project GALILEA [1] is to design and implement innovative new undergraduate courses that attract a gender-balanced ratio of students at the Berlin Institute of Technology. In this article we describe the design and implementation of an exemplary new course. The bachelor course of "Natural sciences in the Information Society" was the first of the GALILEA courses starting in winter term 2007/08. Its goals and innovations are illustrated in detail.

In Germany we have seen a rising concern on lacking in numbers of students in science and engineering in recent years. Technological subjects are often regarded as not attractive by potential students. To address these problems early in the development of the children we offer courses in robotics. These benefit from the attractiveness of robots in popular culture, imposing a very low inhibition threshold. Positive technology experience for the participants of both genders can be created by paying attention to gender-sensitive aspects. By using tool sets like LEGO Mindstorms one can provide hands-on experiences and immediate results, giving the children both opportunities for creativity and a sense of achievement. A wide range of scientific and technological skills can be covered easily by employing this highly interdisciplinary field.

Mathematical knowledge and abilities are among engineers' most important tools and are often needed in introductory classes before the relevant topics can be offered in the mathematics classes. The compromise most often used by doing a digression in the non-mathematical classes is neither very satisfying for students and teachers nor is it especially successful. We introduce the "Early Bird" project allowing beginners to use the often unused period between "Abitur" (German high-school graduation) and beginning of studies in the winter term for attending the mathematics modules of the first semester ("Linear Algebra" and "Calculus I") before the official beginning of studies. With this project, students have the in-depth mathematical knowledge at their disposal considerably earlier. Students of engineering can reduce the duration of their education in mathematics by one semester by preponing the mathematics classes of higher semesters as well.

Due to the design knowledge discrepancy during collaborative design, conflicts can be revealed from the process of collaborative design decision. A critical element of collaborative design would be conflict resolution. The conflict resolution is correlative with both of the knowledge granulation and specific method provided. In this paper, granularity is used to describe rules acquainted based on the concept of rough degree. In this condition, A feasible distance formula between different rules is constructed according to the requirement of describing the distance between different rules and the definition of attribute significance in information system with rough theory, in which the operator of attribute importance is introduced, and then traditional conflict resolutions are analyzed. As a result, the concept of rule set evolution is put forward, and the instance is introduced to explain the efficiency of new method.

The method of multiple heterogeneous ant colonies with information exchange (MHACIE) is presented in this paper with emphasis on the speed of finding the optimal solution and the corresponding computational complexity. The proposed method which is inspired by biology and psychology has a structure composed of several ant colonies. These colonies participate in solving problems in a concurrently manner and also exchange information with each other in communicational steps. Each ant colony is considered as an intelligent agent with behavioral traits. These behavioral traits play a key role in the solving procedure, in interrelation circumstances and in installation of relations. Faster solutions have been achieved using different employments of agents in the algorithm structure. Experimental results show the superiority of Multiple heterogeneous ant colonies algorithm in comparison to the standard ant colony system (ACS) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms on different benchmarks. A dynamic, control engineering benchmark is also provided in order to gain a more complete evaluation of the proposed algorithm.

Achieving energy-efficient dynamic walking has become one of the main subjects of research on robotic bipedal locomotion. Approaches based on passive-dynamic walkers can accomplish bipedal locomotion. However, passive dynamic walking has only been studied with the legs, and the effect of an upper body has not been clarified. This paper investigates the effect of an upper body on the efficiency and stability of dynamic bipedal locomotion based on observations. We first investigated a suitable upper body, which was a simple 1-link torso with a bisecting hip mechanism that would not destroy natural dynamics of the biped model. Second, we analyzed the robot's driving mechanism and chose underactuated virtual passive dynamic walking as the method for generating an efficient dynamic gait. We confirmed that efficient dynamic walking was possible with a specific resistance of 0.01 and investigated the effect of the physical parameters of the upper body through numerical simulations.
