The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the unlicensed use of ultra- wideband (UWB) (range of 3.1-10.6 GHz) for commercial purposes in 2002 [1]. The chip-set for lowband (range 3.1-4.8 GHz) application has already been developed and UWB system for lowband has been evaluated by many companies. But the chip-set for full-band (range of 3.1-10.6 GHz) is on its developing stage. Therefore, various researches on the active devices like LNA, PA and the passives like filter, balun, antenna for full-band application are being performed vigorously [2], [3]. High electron mobility transistors(HEMTs) have played an important role in applications at millimeter wave ranges due to its high speed, low noise characteristics. Focusing on the low noise and high gain characteristics of the devices, applications at 3.1-10.6 GHz, utilizing pseudomorphic HEMT(pHEMT) has reported with excellent performance [4]. Motivated by this we have fabricated balanced low noise amplifier for UWB application utilizing metamorphic InAlAs/InGaAs HEMTs(MHEMT) on GaAs substrate. For the wideband amplifier evaluation, the balanced amplifier with the broadband coupler was designed and realized using multilayer organic substrate based on the ceramic- polymer composite materials developed in this work.

This paper presents an image tracking algorithm for surveillance system, electro-optical tracking system and missile image seeker based on phase correlation and Fourier-Mallin transform. The algorithm consists of an image pre-processing module, a translation estimation module using phase correlation, a fine motion estimation module applied when confidence rate comes from correlation output can not fulfill threshold value, and reference image update module. The fine motion estimation can be used for measuring shift, rotate and scale between a reference and input image based on Fourier-Mellin transform. A sub-pixel registration method is used to enhance estimation accuracy. Proposed algorithm was evaluated its accuracy and robustness using some real indoor and outdoor image sequences.

A new analytic method to design excitation and emission filters of a multispectral fluorescence imaning system for poultry fecal inspection is proposed. A mathematical modal for a multispectral imaging system is proposed and its system parameters, such as excitation and emission filters, were optimally determined by linear discriminant analysis(LDA). Alternation scheme was propoded for numerical implementation. Fluorescence characteristics of organic materials filters feces of poultry carcasses are analtzed by LDA to design the optimal excitation and emission filters for poultry fecal inspection. The proposed method is applicable to other agricultural products which are distinguishable by their spectral properties.

Monitoring and predicting human cognitive state and performance using physiological signals such as Electroencephalogram (EEG) have recently gained increasing attention in the fields of brain-computer interface and cognitive neuroscience. Most previous psychophysiological studies of cognitive changes have attempted to use the same model for all subjects. However, the relatively large individual variability in EEG dynamics relating to loss of alertness suggests that for many operators, group statistics cannot be used to accurately predict changes in cognitive states. Attempts have also been made to build a subject-dependent model for each individual based on his/her pilot data to account for individual variability. However, such methods assume the cross-session variability in EEG dynamics to be negligible, which could be problematic due to electrode displacements, environmental noises, and skin-electrode impedance. Here first we show that the EEG power in the alpha and theta bands are strongly correlated with changes in the subjectpsilas cognitive state reflected through his driving performance and hence his departure from alertness. Then under very mild and realistic assumptions we derive a model for the alert state of the person using EEG power in the alpha and theta bands. We demonstrate that deviations (computed by Mahalanobis distance) of the EEG power in the alpha and theta bands from the corresponding alert models are correlated to the changes in the driving performance. Finally, for detection of drowsiness we use a linear combination of deviations of the EEG power in the alpha band and theta band from the respective alert models that best correlates with subjectpsilas changing level of alertness, indexed by subjectpsilas behavioral response in the driving task. This approach could lead to a practical system for noninvasive monitoring of the cognitive state of human operators in attention-critical settings.

A route establishment scheme for multi-route coding in multihop cellular networks

Since the network topology in multihop cellular networks is flexible, multiple routes from a user station to a base station can be established. To reduce packet reception errors of wireless links, a multi-route coding scheme was proposed. An important issue of the multi-route coding is to develop an efficient route establishment scheme. In this paper, we propose a route establishment scheme for multi-route coding in multihop cellular networks. Our proposed scheme consists of a route selection method based on the bit error rate of each wireless link and a hybrid-type multipletree routing protocol. We evaluate the performance of our proposed scheme by a computer simulation and show the resulting improvement in the packet error. © 2008 Academy Publisher.

This work deals with navigation of an omni-directional mobile robot with active caster wheels. Initially, the posture of the omni-directional mobile robot is calculated by using the odometry information. Next, the position accuracy of the mobile robot is measured through comparison of the odometry information and the external sensor measurement. Finally, for successful navigation of the mobile robot, a motion planning algorithm that employs kinematic redundancy resolution method is proposed. Through experiments for multiple obstacles and multiple moving obstacles, the feasibility of the proposed navigation algorithm was verified.

In this paper, a new desktop NC machine tool with compliance controllability is presented for finishing metallic molds with small curved surface. The NC machine tool consists of three single-axis robots with high position resolution. A tool attached to the tip of the z-axis has a small ball-end shape. Also, the control system of the NC machine tool is composed of a force feedback loop, position feedback loop and position feedforward loop. The force feedback loop controls the polishing force consisting of tool contact force and kinetic friction force. The position feedback loop controls the position in pick feed direction. Further, the position feedforward loop leads the tool tip along cutter location data. It is expected that the NC machine tool delicately removes surface cusps with under about 0.3 mm height on a mold, and finishes the surface with high quality. In order to first confirm the application limit of a conventional industrial robot to a finishing task, we evaluate the backlash that causes the position inaccuracy at the tip of the abrasive tool, through a simple position/force measurement. Through a similar position/force measurement and a surface following control experiment along a lens mold, the basic position/force controllability of the proposed NC machine tool is demonstrated.

In this paper, we show that the tracking performance of a hard disk drive actuator can be improved by using two adaptive neural networks, each of which is tailored for a specific task. The first neural network utilizes accelerometer signal to detect external vibrations, and compensates for its effect on hard disk drive position via feedforward action. In particular, no information on the plant, sensor and disturbance dynamics is needed in the design of this neural network disturbance compensator. The second neural network, designed to compensate for the pivot friction, uses a signum activation function to introduce nonlinearities inherent to pivot friction, thus reducing the neural network¿s burden of expectation. The stability of the proposed scheme is analyzed by the Lyapunov criterion. Simulation results show that the tracking performance of the hard disk drives can be improved significantly with the use of both neural networks compared to the case without compensation, or when only one of the networks is activated.
