This paper considers the control of discrete linear repetitive processes, which are a distinct class of two-dimensional (2-D) discrete linear systems, i.e. information propagation in two independent directions, which are of both system-theoretic and applications interest. In this paper we report new results on the design of control laws with guaranteed levels of performance. In particular, develop algorithms for the design of an ℋ∞ and 2-∞ dynamic output feedback controller which guarantees that the resulting controlled process is stable and has prescribed disturbance attenuation performance as measured by ℋ∞ and 2-∞ norms. © 2007 IEEE.

Over the last ten years, monitors of depth of anesthesia have progressively been integrated in the clinical practice. Based on the analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG), these monitors deliver an index that helps the anesthesiologist to determine the state of the patient during the surgery. Although they employ different kind of algorithms, spectral parameters are always taken into account to achieve the final indexes. In this work, a new spectral parameter based on the cumulative power spectrum is proposed. When compared to the Spectral Edge Frequency (SEF), a classic spectral parameter, the Cumulative Power Spectrum Index (CPSI) presents a higher correlation with reference indexes (AAI, BIS and CePROP) and a higher prediction probability of the state of the patient. Furthermore, when compared to the reference indexes, the CPSI shows similar performances in terms of correlation and presents a higher prediction probability than two of them (BIS and CePROP).

This paper presents the flux weakening control method of an open winding machine which is connected to the two isolated inverters. The methods of the current reference modification and the over voltage modulation of two inverters are proposed to enhance the flux weakening control of the open winding machine at high speed. Furthermore, the power flows through two inverters are controlled independently as desired. The validity of the proposed flux weakening control method is verified by experiment results. The results show that the torque capability of the machine can be extended by 15% under the same current limitation compared to the Y-connected machine with the single inverter.

In this paper, the power flow management algorithms for a 4-wheel driven series hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is presented, that has multiple power sources composed of diesel engine based generator, lead-acid battery bank, and super-capacitor bank. Super-capacitor is utilized as short term energy storage means to meet dynamic performance of the vehicle, while the battery is utilized as a mid term energy storage for the electric vehicle (EV) mode operation due to their higher energy density. The generator based on interior permanent magnet machine (IPMM), run by a diesel engine, provides average power for the normal operation of the vehicle. Thanks to the proposed power flow management algorithm, not only the dynamic performance but also the fuel efficiency and reliability of the vehicle have been improved. The proposed power flow management algorithm has been experimentally verified with a full scale prototype vehicle.

It is generally agreed that faces are not recognized only by utilizing some holistic search among all learned faces, but also through a feature analysis that aimed to specify more important features of each specific face. This paper addresses a novel decision strategy that efficiently uses both holistic and facial component (eye, nose and mouth) feature analysis to recognize faces. The proposed algorithm first performs a holistic search using the whole image features and selects probable candidates for further processing. Then the facial features of these probable candidates are compared and classified with the stored patterns in the train set. Finally the classification results are fused with a weighted majority voting to form the final decision. Simulation studies justify the superior performance of the proposed method as compared to that of Eigenface method.

An innovative meta-search engine named WebFusion has been presented. The search system learns the expertness of every particular underlying search engine in a certain category based on the users' preferences according to an analysis of click-through behavior. In addition, an intelligent re-ranking method based on ordered weighted averaging (OWA) was introduced. The re-ranking method was used to fuse the results' scores of the underlying search engines. Independently, a progressive application of evolutionary computing to optimize Boolean search queries in crisp and fuzzy information retrieval systems was investigated, evaluated in laboratory environment and presented. In this paper we propose an incorporation of these two innovative recent methods founding an advanced Internet search application.

The investigated control problem of nonlinear time-delay discrete-time systems is addressed using Takagi-Sugeno model. Parametric uncertainty and time-delay terms are employed in building the Takagi-Sugeno model for the controlled plant for the purpose of close representation of the original plant system. The integrity and robustness are guaranteed for the closed-loop fuzzy system in sense of Lyapunov stability method via fuzzy state observers. Sufficient conditions for the fuzzy system to possess integrity against actuator failures and sensor failures in the closed-loop are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities under assumption of known bounds on uncertainties. The results for trailer-truck example are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the method.

In sensor networks, because of densely deployment of sensor nodes, sensing area of each sensor node is overlapped with each other and its observed data sequence is correlated. The joint decoding scheme that uses the correlation between the observed data sequences can reduce bit errors in the wireless channel. In this paper, we extend the joint decoding to the case of more than two-hop transmission. For such extension, selection of fusion scheme is very important issue. If the global fusion scheme is employed and the observed data sequence of each sensor node is transmitted on an independent route, route diversity effect could be obtained by using the correlation between observed data sequences. We compare the bit error rate performance of local and global fusion schemes and clarify the route diversity effect

This paper investigates a fault detection problem for a class of discrete-time Markovian jump systems with norm-bounded uncertainties and mode-dependent time-delays. Attention is focused on constructing the residual generator based on the filter of which its parameters matrices are dependent on the system mode, that is, the fault detection filter is a Markovian jump system as well. The design of fault detection filter is reduced to H-infinity filtering problem by using H-infinity control theory, which can guarantee the difference between the residual and the fault （or, more generally weighted fault） as small as possible in the context of enhancing the robustness of residual to modeling errors, control inputs and unknown inputs. Sufficient condition for the existence of the above filters is established by means of linear matrix inequalities, which can be readily solved by using standard numerical software. A numerical example is given to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

This paper addresses issues related to output feedback control, including sensor placement, for a model of an air-breathing hypersonic vehicle. The model presents a number of control challenges, in particular because of strong couplings between the propulsive and aerodynamic forces. Because of the vehicle's low weight, slenderness, and length, the vehicle's flexibility has a large impact on stability and control of the vehicle. Two output feedback control methods are developed. One applies reconstruction of the flexible body system states, toward applications of state feedback control. The other uses a robust design that does not rely on an observer to ensure stabilization and performance throughout a given flight envelope. A rate gyroscope and an accelerometer have been modeled, incorporating the flexible effects, and strategies for sensor placement have been developed for the hypersonic vehicle model to enhance observability or to preserve certain system structures that are favorable for robust control design. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the sensor placement strategies and output feedback control performances.
