In this paper, we present the joint activities developed in the frame of the FP6 European Network of Excellence METAMORPHOSE in the field of new micro-structured materials for antenna applications. One of the key scientific goals of the research efforts developed within this network is to design innovative micro-structured materials to improve the performances of conventional radiators. Miniaturization, multi- functionality, reduced interference with electronic circuitry, are some of the main challenges in the design of antennas for the next generation of electronic transceivers in the microwave frequency range. The employment of different classes of metamaterials in innovative antenna layouts has been demonstrated to be effective to reach most of the desired goals. The theoretical, numerical and experimental efforts carried out by the leading European institutions working in this field, in fact, show how metamaterial antennas with unusual features are ready to push the innovation in the antenna research. The collaborative dimension of this research is described in this paper, as well as the related scientific achievements.

Yellow organic light emitting diode (OLED) with Red/Green emitting layer (EML) sequence showed higher efficiency than device with Green/Red EML sequence because of the electrical carrier conduction difference in EMLs. Based on this result white OLED with additional blue emitter was demonstrated with maximum efficiency of 18.3cd/A at 100cd/m{sup}2 and good color stability.

Healthcare systems and insurers nationwide regularly make decisions regarding which drugs to include or exclude from their formularies based on evidence concerning benefits, risks, and costs of the medications. A major barrier to effective drug selection is the lack of sufficient published information on the safety of drugs, particularly new drugs. In this paper, we propose an innovative multi-agent system, named ADRMonitor, for actively monitoring and detecting signal pairs implicating anticipated or potential adverse drug reactions (ADRs) of interest at a healthcare facility. Each intelligent agent is empowered by a fuzzy logic-based computational recognition-primed decision (RPD) model where fuzzy logic is utilized to represent, interpret, and compute vague and/or subjective information. We conducted a simulation study based on thousands of hypothetical patient cases that were created on the basis of real patients who were prescribed the drug Cisapride in a local hospital. At the current stage, our focus is to establish that the system can outperform the spontaneous reporting approach in identifying signal pairs. Under certain conditions (e.g., without agent collaboration), our simulation results show that (1) ADRMonitor detected 21 out of 27 (78%) ADRs when the optimized RPD model was used as a gold standard; (2) the number of ADRs detected by the agents is (many) more than those detected by the spontaneous reporting strategy (assuming 10% reporting rate - high end of rates reported in the literature) at any particular time. The second result implies that useful information could be collected more timely by the proposed agent system for formulary decisions.

The performance of ICA algorithms in correct separation of independent sources can be highly affected by existence of noises in the observation data. In this paper a hybrid Wavelet-ICA method for improving the functionality of noise free ICA algorithms in noisy environment is proposed. At first the robustness of two most frequent ICA algorithms, named Fast ICA and Information maximization ICA, for extracting true activated spatial and temporal sources off MRI signals in the presence of different noise levels are evaluated These algorithms are applied on simulated fMRI datasets consisting of different activated sources with various temporal patterns, different levels of activation, trend and noise. Then, a hybrid wavelet-Fast ICA model to transform the signals into a domain, allowing for simultaneous un-mixing and wavelet based de-noising is proposed. As the results show this combination has significantly improved the sensitivity of extracted sources in different SNR levels, in particular in low SNR's. To measure the accuracy of source separation, the correlation coefficients between extracted activation signals and simulated temporal patterns are also measured. As the results suggest the proposed hybrid method is more robust in comparison with noise free ICA for noisy observation in extracting more accurate independent sources.

Design, simulation, and optimization of a novel (extremely) broad-band coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed on-chip antenna using Genetic Algorithm (GA) will be presented. The antenna is of slot type and has the shape of a bow-tie with rounded truncation. It is designed on quartz coated silicon substrate and fed with 50 ohms CPW transmission line. Return loss of the antenna is less than -10 dB for most of the frequency range of 5-60 GHz. © 2006 Institute of electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. All rights reserved.

The concept of intraepithelial neoplasm (IEN) as a near-obligate precursor of cancers has generated opportunities to examine drug or device intervention strategies that may reverse or retard the sometimes lengthy process of carcinogenesis. Chemopreventive agents with high therapeutic indices, well-monitored for efficacy and safety, are greatly needed, as is development of less invasive or minimally disruptive visualization and assessment methods to safely screen nominally healthy but at-risk patients, often for extended periods of time and at repeated intervals. Imaging devices, alone or in combination with anticancer drugs, may also provide novel interventions to treat or prevent precancer.

Distance prediction algorithms use O(N) Round Trip Time (RTT) measurements to predict the N2 RTTs among N nodes. Distance prediction can be applied to improve the performance of a wide variety of Internet applications: for instance, to guide the selection of a download server from multiple replicas, or to guide the construction of overlay networks or multicast trees. Although the accuracy of existing prediction algorithms has been extensively compared using the relative prediction error metric, their impact on applications has not been systematically studied. In this paper, we consider distance prediction algorithms from an application's perspective to answer the following questions: (1) Are existing prediction algorithms adequate for the applications? (2) Is there a significant performance difference between the different prediction algorithms, and which is the best from the application perspective? (3) How does the prediction error propagate to affect the user perceived application performance? (4) How can we address the fundamental limitation (i.e., inaccuracy) of distance prediction algorithms? We systematically experiment with three types of representative applications (overlay multicast, server selection, and overlay construction), three distance prediction algorithms (GNP, IDES, and the triangulated heuristic), and three real-world distance datasets (King, PlanetLab, and AMP). We find that, although using prediction can improve the performance of these applications, the achieved performance can be dramatically worse than the optimal case where the real distances are known. We formulate statistical models to explain this performance gap. In addition, we explore various techniques to improve the prediction accuracy and the performance of prediction-based applications. We find that selectively conducting a small number of measurements based on prediction-based screening is most effective. ©2006 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose an embedded multi-task scheduling system to make the wireless brain computer interface to real-time receive electroencephalogram signal more accurate. This method we propose also can increase the flexibility of the system. Base on the method, we can change the peripheral devices easily. And the tasks are taken as modules, so it also can increase the flexibility of system programs. The proposed system integrates electroencephalogram signal amplifier technique, wireless transmission technique, and embedded real-time system. The OMAP (Open Multimedia Architecture Platform) is used as a development platform and an embedded operating system is also used. © 2006 IEEE.

We report the enhancement of the electroluminescence (EL) efficiency and the device stability of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by inserting a copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (F16CuPC)-doped N,N′-di(1-naphthyl)-N,N′-diphenylbenzidine (α -NPD) layer between an indium-tin oxide and α -NPD. Compared with the reference device consisting of the bilayer structure of α-NPD and tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3), the devices having F16CuPC-doped a -NPD show not only an increased EL efficiency (∼4.5 cd/A compared with ∼3.8 cd/A for the reference device) and lower driving voltage but also a longer lifetime and smaller operating voltage variation over time. It is suggested that the improved device performance can be attributed to the higher hole-injection efficiency and thermal stability of the F16CuPC-doped α-NPD layer.
