Calf skeletal muscle pump activity is essential for maintaining adequate venous and interstitial fluid flows in the dependent body. Correspondingly, failure of this extracorporeal pump leads to a host of acute and chronic physiological complications. The focus of this study is to assess the calf muscle pump contractility, more specifically through analysis of soleus muscle firing dynamics, in supine and seated positions, utilizing vibromyography (VMG). We have extended our previous investigations which relied on Fourier analysis of VMG recordings by utilizing wavelet-based time-frequency analysis to characterize the intrinsically non-stationary peripheral postural muscle dynamics during quiet sitting. Our objective was to identify the fibers types responsible for muscle pump activity during sitting, by looking for significant increases in activity in specific muscle fiber groups when a subject assumes an upright position from recumbency, and examine their temporal dynamics

ZnO nanowire field-effect transistors (NW-FETs) employing single nanowires were fabricated, using a self-assembled superlattice (SAS) as the gate insulator. Both depletion-mode and enhancement-mode ZnO NW-FETs were fabricated and characterized. An electrostatic model is proposed to describe observed threshold voltage shift upon optimum ozone treatment. Temperature-dependent current-voltage characteristics of depletion-mode ZnO NW-FETs verify this model, indicating the existence of body current through ZnO nanowires with low activation energy. In addition, NW-FETs that use multiple ZnO nanowires and a SiO 2 gate insulator were fabricated to achieve higher on-current without significant degradation in on-off current ratio, threshold voltage shift, and subthreshold slopes.

We have been research saccade-related EEG signals in order to predict beginning of saccade by EEG signal. We have already detected saccade-related EEG signal by ensemble averaging and saccade-related independent components (ICs) by independent component analysis (ICA). However, features of saccade-related EEG signals and saccade-related ICs were not compared. In this paper, saccade-related EEG signals and saccade-related ICs were compared in the point of the latency between starting time of a saccade and time when a saccade-related EEG signal or an IC has maximum value and in the point of the peak scale where a saccade-related EEG signal or an IC has maximum value

This paper considers the problem of guaranteed exponential stability of switched delay systems by using Lyapunov function method, Razumikhin technique. The scheme of average dwell time is introduced into the switched delay systems. Based on the scheme of average dwell time, sufficient conditions for exponential stability of switched delay systems are presented. For a certain class of switched delay systems, a lower bound on the average dwell time guaranteeing exponential stability can be explicitly calculated via the solutions of some linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method

Recently, fully-implantable middle ear hearing devices (F-IMEHD) to enhance the hearing ability of auditory impaired persons have been developed in several countries. The implantable hearing device requires an external controller and a non-invasive power transmitter for recharging an internal battery of the device. This study shows the implementation of an inductively coupled control unit to be able to recharge the battery and transmit a control signal to the implanted device by designing the structure of coupled antennas and the data protocol using an on-off keying modulation. The implemented control unit has the advantages that it makes the implanted device reduce the power consumption and increase a recharging interval by externally supplying the power of a control signal receiver instead of using an internal battery. Through the experimental results, it has been verified that the implemented control unit has the performance of transmitting power and control signal to a F-IMEHD

In this paper, we developed millimeter-wave (mm-wave) integrated passives on the high-performance MCM-D technology considering flip-chip interconnection, which has the improved electrical, thermal, and thermo-mechanical performances for the flip-chip structure. These integrated passives using thin-film microstrip (TFMS) line include the Wilkinson power divider, the broad-side Lange coupler, the balun using the broad-side Lange couplers, and the band-pass filter. The fabricated Wilkinson power divider has an insertion loss less than 0.8 dB and better than 15 dB matching and isolation over a wide frequency range for W-band (75 GHz ~ 110 GHz). The broad-side Lange coupler shows the transmission and coupling loss of 3.8 plusmn 0.2 dB and return loss better than 18 dB in W-band. The developed balun exhibits that insertion loss is less than 2.5 dB and amplitude and absolute phase imbalance is less than 1.2 dB and plusmn3deg, respectively, in W-band. And the band-pass filter for the V-band application was designed and implemented with insertion loss of 2.6 dB at 56 GHz. These high-performance integrated passives on SNU's MCM-D technology can make mm-wave modules to be compact, high-performance, and low-manufacturing cost

In this paper, we present a real-time stereo vision based pose and motion estimation system that will be used for landing an unmanned helicopter on a moving target such as a ship deck. The vision algorithm mainly consists of a feature extraction task and a pose and motion estimation task. The 2D planer target with regular features defined can significantly simplify the feature extraction task such as corner detection and feature points matching. To effectively estimate the distance between the camera carrier and target a stereo camera system is applied. By means of sub-pixel corner location the precisions of pose estimation and relative motion detection can be improved. We present results from semi-physical simulation which show that our vision algorithm is accurate and robust. The methodology provides an effective subsystem for the development of autonomous robot helicopter that will land on a given target under the guide of vision.

We demonstrate, for the first time, the optical properties of the selectively oxidized vertical cavity laser (VCL) with a depleted optical thyristor (DOT) structure, which has not only a low threshold current, but also a high sensitivity to the optical input light. The oxidized PnpN VCL-DOT clearly shows the nonlinear s-shaped current-voltage and lasing characteristics. A switching voltage of 5.24 V, a holding voltage of 1.50 V, and a very low threshold current of 0.65 mA is measured, making these devices attractive for optical processing applications.

Near-field intensity statistics in semicontinuous silver films over a wide range of surface coverage are investigated using near-field scanning optical microscopy. The variance of intensity fluctuations and the high-order moments of intensity enhancement exhibit local minima at the percolation threshold. This reduction in local field fluctuations results from resonant excitation of delocalized surface plasmon modes. By probing the modification of the critical indices for high-order moments of intensity enhancement caused by the delocalized states, we provide the first experimental evidence for the coexistence of localized and delocalized surface plasmon modes in percolating metal films.
