A Dual-Core Dual-Mode Class-F VCO With Wide Frequency Tuning Range Using Wide Inductance-Switching-Range Inductor

A novel dual-core dual-mode class-F voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with wide frequency tuning range (TR) is proposed in this letter. It consists of two coupled parallel "8"-shaped inductor and two crossed-coupled VCO cores. To increase the TR of the proposed VCO without adding additional footprint size, a single-turn common-mode inductor is embedded inside the "8"-shaped inductor. By controlling the mode switches, the inductor can work in different modes with large inductance difference, realizing large VCO TR consequently. Then, the two coupled inductors were engineered to form the fundamental and third harmonic resonances, respectively, thereby producing a pseudo-square wave output waveform and realizing class-F operation. With the proposed configuration, the phase noise (PN) of the proposed VCO can be significantly reduced without increasing VCO core size. To demonstrate the proposed idea, a VCO prototype is fabricated in a 65-nm CMOS process with a core size of 1.235×0.8mm. It achieves a wide frequency TR from 2.84 to 7.04 GHz. The measured PN at 1-MHz offset is from -123.9 to -113.1 dBc/Hz, demonstrating an FOMT of 196.0-201.3 dBc/Hz. © 2023 IEEE.

In the last few decades, metaheuristic algorithms that use the laws of nature have been used dramatically in numerous and complex optimization problems. The artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA) is one of the metaheuristic algorithms that was invented in 2022 based on the foraging and migration behavior of the hummingbird for modeling and solving optimization problems. The algorithm initially starts with an initial random population of solutions. It then uses iterative processes and hummingbird position updates to balance exploration and exploitation toward the most optimal solutions. This paper has a detailed and extensive review of the AHA algorithm considering the aspects of hybrid, improved, binary, multi-objective, and optimization problems. In addition, a wide range of applications of AHA in various fields such as feature selection, image processing, scheduling, Internet of Things, classification, clustering, financial and economic issues, forecasting, wireless sensor networks, and many engineering challenges are explored. The statistical and numerical results showed that the AHA algorithm with deep learning methods, Levy flight, and opposition-based learning had the best performance. Also, the AHA algorithm is most widely used in solving multimodal optimization problems and continuous functions. © The Author(s) under exclusive licence to International center for Numerical Methods in engineering (CIMNE) 2024.

The economic dispatch problem (EDP) poses a significant challenge in energy management for modern power systems, particularly as these systems undergo expansion. This growth escalates the demand for communication resources and increases the risk of communication failures. To address this challenge, we propose a distributed algorithm with network-independent step sizes and an event-triggered mechanism, which reduces communication requirements and enhances adaptability. Unlike traditional methods, our algorithm uses network-independent step sizes derived from each agent's local cost functions, thus eliminating the need for detailed network topology knowledge. The theoretical derivation identifies a range of step size values that depend solely on the objective function's strong convexity and the gradient's Lipschitz continuity. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is shown to achieve a linear convergence rate, assuming the event triggering threshold criteria are met for linear convergence. Numerical experiments further validate the effectiveness and advantages of our proposed distributed algorithm by demonstrating its ability to maintain good convergence characteristics while reducing communication frequency. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Grid-distance-based selection for fine-grained object detection in aerial images

Fine-grained object detection is a novel research direction that has recently garnered significant attention in the remote sensing field. Unlike general datasets, fine-grained datasets typically present more minor inter-class variances. Specifically, we highlight the limitations of using Intersection over Union (IoU) as a metric for label assignment. In this letter, we propose a Grid-Distance-Based Selection (GDS) method, which utilizes a newly defined grid distance metric to assess the classification potential of anchors. This approach enables positive samples to capture more discriminative features. Furthermore, relationship modeling of key regions within an object is introduced into fine-grained object detection tasks. The classification branch is enhanced by incorporating a Swin Transformer block to aggregate the aligned features from different localizations of the object. The proposed method is effective and easily to be implemented. Notably, compared to the baseline S2A-Net, our method achieves 35.89% (+2.22%) on the Fair1m-1.0 and 36.95% (+1.92%) on the Fair1m-2.0. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Stereo image sand removal is crucial to improve the perceptual quality for autonomous driving perception. Existing methods often fall short in accurately estimating the uncertainty inherent in degraded images, leading to suboptimal outcomes. To address this, we introduce a novel framework named Decoupling While Coupling(DWC). DWC pioneers the integration of inter-view uncertainty estimation, cross-view uncertainty-aware interaction and block-wise uncertainty representation for superior stereo image sand removal. For cross-view information interaction, we propose an Uncertainty-aware Cross-view Attentive Interaction module(UCAI) to cope with the lack of uncertainty estimation ability in the existing cross-view information interaction mechanism. For the uncertainty perception and information interaction within the inter-view, we propose a Distribution Modeling Coupling Block(DMCB), which transmits the representation of uncertainty between each backbone module. For block-wise uncertainty estimation, we use our proposed Uncertainty-aware Distribution Feature Modulator(UDFM) as the backbone of DWC to modulate the uncertainty inside the neural network itself. Extensive experimental validations on our proposed stereo image sand removal dataset SandST confirm the efficacy of DWC. Our method not only achieves higher PSNR and SSIM, but also exhibits enhanced robustness against various sand degrees and patterns. © 2025 IEEE.

Abstract: This study examines the impact of orography and the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) on rainfall patterns in West Sumatra, Indonesia, using ERA5 reanalysis data. We analyzed variables such as precipitation, zonal and vertical winds, vertically integrated moisture convergence (VIMC), Froude number, lifting condensation level (LCL), level of free convection (LFC), level of non-buoyancy (LNB), convective available potential energy (CAPE), and convective inhibition (CINH), focusing on MJO phases 3 (MJO-3) and 4 (MJO-4). The ERA5 data was validated with observations from the Agam Observation Station, including data from the equatorial atmosphere radar, X-band Doppler Radar, optical rain gauge, microwave radiometer, and radiosonde. Our analysis, covering 22 years (2001–2022) of hourly data from five locations at varying elevations, reveals that topography significantly influences rainfall distribution, with windward slopes and mountain peaks receiving the most rainfall. This pattern closely aligns with VIMC, indicating that moisture convergence is a key driver of rainfall variability. MJO-3 significantly enhances rainfall by reducing zonal wind speeds, thereby increasing moisture convergence, while MJO-4 has a minimal impact, with increased zonal wind speeds limiting moisture convergence. The study concludes that VIMC patterns, influenced by wind dynamics, are central to understanding rainfall variability in West Sumatra’s mountainous terrain under different MJO phases. research highlights: Orography strongly influences rainfall in West Sumatra, with the most precipitation on windward slopes and peaks, linked to vertically integrated moisture convergence (VIMC). MJO-3 boosts rainfall by reducing zonal wind speeds, which enhances moisture convergence and emphasizes wind dynamics in rainfall variability. This survey paper explores the transformative role of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), marking a paradigm shift from conventional, manually driven resuscitation practices to intelligent, data-driven interventions. It examines the evolution of CPR through the lens of predictive modeling, AI-enhanced devices, and real-time decision-making tools that collectively aim to improve resuscitation outcomes and survival rates. Unlike prior surveys that either focus solely on traditional CPR methods or offer general insights into ML applications in healthcare, this work provides a novel interdisciplinary synthesis tailored specifically to the domain of CPR. It presents a comprehensive taxonomy that classifies ML techniques into four key CPR-related tasks: rhythm analysis, outcome prediction, non-invasive blood pressure and chest compression modeling, and real-time detection of pulse and Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC). The paper critically evaluates emerging ML approaches-including Reinforcement Learning (RL) and transformer-based models-while also addressing real-world implementation barriers such as model interpretability, data limitations, and deployment in high-stakes clinical settings. Furthermore, it highlights the role of eXplainable AI (XAI) in fostering clinical trust and adoption. By bridging the gap between resuscitation science and advanced ML techniques, this survey establishes a structured foundation for future research and practical innovation in ML-enhanced CPR. It offers clear insights, identifies unexplored opportunities, and sets a forward-looking research agenda identifying emerging trends and practical implementation challenges aiming to improve both the reliability and effectiveness of CPR in real-world emergencies. © The Author(s) 2025.

The scarcity of annotated medical images is a major bottleneck in developing learning models for medical image analysis. Hence, recent studies have focused on pretrained models with fewer annotation requirements that can be fine-tuned for various downstream tasks. However, existing approaches are mainly 3D adaptions of 2D approaches ill-suited for 3D medical imaging data. Motivated by this gap, we propose novel domain-aware multi-task learning tasks to pretrain a 3D Swin Transformer for brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our method considers the domain knowledge in brain MRI by incorporating brain anatomy and morphology as well as standard pretext tasks adapted for 3D imaging in a contrastive learning setting. We pretrain our model using large-scale brain MRI data of 13,687 samples spanning several large-scale databases. Our method outperforms existing supervised and self-supervised methods in three downstream tasks of Alzheimer’s disease classification, Parkinson’s disease classification, and age prediction tasks. The ablation study of the proposed pretext tasks shows the effectiveness of our pretext tasks.
