A transcutaneous charger for the fully implantable middle ear hearing device (F-IMEHD), which can monitor the charging level of battery, has been designed and implemented. In order to recharge the battery of F-IMEHD, the electromagnetic coupling between primary coil at outer body and secondary coil at inner body has been used. Considering the implant condition of the F-IMEHD, the primary coil and the secondary coil have been designed. Using the resonance of LC tank circuit at each coil, transmission efficiency was increased. Since the primary and the secondary coil are magnetically coupled, the current variation of the primary coil is related with the impedance of internal resonant circuit. Using the principle mentioned above, the implanted module could transmit outward the information about charging state of battery or coupling between two coils by the changing internal impedance. As in the demonstrated results of experiment, the implemented charger has supplied the sufficient operating voltage for the implanted battery within about 10 mm distance. And also, it has been confirmed that the implanted module can transmit information outward by control of internal impedance

We demonstrate, for the first time, the optical properties of the selectively oxidized vertical cavity laser (VCL) with a depleted optical thyristor (DOT) structure, which has not only a low threshold current, but also a high sensitivity to the optical input light. The oxidized PnpN VCL-DOT clearly shows the nonlinear s-shaped current-voltage and lasing characteristics. A switching voltage of 5.24 V, a holding voltage of 1.50 V, and a very low threshold current of 0.65 mA is measured, making these devices attractive for optical processing applications.

A microneedle array has been fabricated and applied to the measurement of transdermal skin potentials in human subjects. Potential changes were recorded in the vicinity of superficial wounds, confirming the generation of a lateral electric field in human skin. The measured electric field decays with distance from the wound edge, and is directed towards the wound. The measurement of endogenous fields in skin is a prelude to the study of the therapeutic efficacy of applied electric fields to chronic non-healing wounds

Current postmarketing surveillance methods largely rely on spontaneous reports which suffer from serious underreporting, latency, and inconsistent reporting. Thus they are not ideal for rapidly identifying rare adverse drug reactions (ADRs). We propose an active, multi-agent computer software system, where each agent is empowered with teamwork capabilities such as anticipating information needs, identifying relevant ADR information, and continuously monitoring and proactively sharing such information in a collaborative fashion with other agents. The main purpose of this system is to help regulatory authorities (e.g., FDA in the U.S.) find previously unrecognized ADRs as early as possible. Another objective is to promote increased filing of on-line ADR reports thereby, addressing the severe underreporting problem with the current system. The proposed system has the potential to significantly accelerate the process of ADR discovery and response by utilizing electronic patient data distributed across many different sources and locations more effectively. Our preliminary system design is presented and some issues related to it are discussed

We consider computationally reconstructing gene regulatory networks on top of the binary abstraction of gene expression state information. Unlike previous Boolean network approaches, the proposed method does not handle noisy gene expression values directly. Instead, two-valued "hidden state" information is derived from gene expression profiles using a robust statistical technique, and a gene interaction network is inferred from this hidden state information. In particular, we exploit Espresso, a well-known 2-level Boolean logic optimizer in order to determine the core network structure. The resulting gene interaction networks can be viewed as dynamic Bayesian networks, which have key advantages over more conventional Bayesian networks in terms of biological phenomena that can be represented. The authors tested the proposed method with a time-course gene expression data set from microarray experiments on anti-cancer drugs doxorubicin and paclitaxel. A gene interaction network was produced by our method, and the identified genes were validated with a public annotation database. The experimental studies we conducted suggest that the proposed method inspired by engineering systems can be a very effective tool to decipher complex gene interactions in living systems
