Since the speaker independent phoneme HMM based voice dialing system uses only the phoneme transcription of the input sentence, the storage space could be reduced greatly. However, the performance of the system is worse than that of the speaker dependent system due to the phoneme recognition errors generated when the speaker independent models are used. In order to solve this problem, a new method that jointly estimates the transformation vectors (bias) and transcriptions for the speaker adaptation is presented. The biases and transcriptions are estimated iteratively from the training data of each user with maximum likelihood approach to the stochastic matching using speaker independent phoneme models. Experimental result shows that the proposed method is superior to the conventional method using transcriptions only. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This paper presents a new method that improves the performance of the speaker specific phonetic template based speech recognizer with the speaker-independent (SI) phoneme HMMs. Since the phonetic template based speech recognizer uses only the phoneme transcription of the input utterance, the performance of the system is worse than that of the speaker dependent system due to the mismatch between the training data and the SI models. In order to solve these problems, a new training method that iteratively estimates the phonetic templates and transformation vectors for the adaptation of the SI phoneme HMMs is presented. The phonetic class based and codebook-based stochastic matching methods are used to estimate the transformation vectors for speaker adaptation. Performance evaluation using the speaker dependent recognition experiments performed over actual telephone line showed a reduction of about 40% in the error rates when compare to the conventional speaker specific phonetic template based speech recognizer. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

In the post-genomic era, the availability of complete genome sequences has given rise to high throughput systems such as gene chips and protein arrays. These techniques revolutionize our understanding of biology by simultaneously probing thousands of biological entities at any given time. Unsupervised classification and clustering have emerged as important methods of analysis, which can be used to group samples with a similar molecular profile and/or molecules with a similar expression profile. However, techniques like hierarchical clustering, k-means, and self organizing maps (SOM) have been extensively used with little attention to the significance of their results. We propose a general method utilizing bootstrap technique to assign confidence levels to clustering results of high throughput biological data. We apply the proposed method to real genomics and proteomics data regarding Renal Cell Cancer (RCC), which is the most common malignancy of the adult kidney. We utilize protein profiles from IL-2 treatment responders and non-responders among metastatic RCC patients using surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI TOF-MS). We also use gene expression data using Affymetrix HG-U133A chips for primary RCC tumors, inquiring the Union International Contre le Cancer's (UICC) TNM classification.

We propose a versatile infrared (IR) absorbing structure for uncooled infrared detectors. We have designed an infrared absorber consisting of five thin film layers (dielectric layer/protection layer/active layer/supporting layer/reflecting layer) that produce a quarter-wavelength resonance condition. It has excellent thermal properties, which are not influenced by the deformation of the thermal isolation structure. We fabricated a microbolometer with the proposed IR absorption structure by a surface micromachining technology. We estimated an IR absorptance of 80%. This IR absorption structure can be applied to both surface micromachining and bulk micromachining.

Current postmarketing surveillance methods largely rely on spontaneous reports which suffer from serious underreporting, latency, and inconsistent reporting. Thus they are not ideal for rapidly identifying rare adverse drug reactions (ADRs). We propose an active, multi-agent computer software system, where each agent is empowered with teamwork capabilities such as anticipating information needs, identifying relevant ADR information, and continuously monitoring and proactively sharing such information in a collaborative fashion with other agents. The main purpose of this system is to help regulatory authorities (e.g., FDA in the U.S.) find previously unrecognized ADRs as early as possible. Another objective is to promote increased filing of on-line ADR reports thereby, addressing the severe underreporting problem with the current system. The proposed system has the potential to significantly accelerate the process of ADR discovery and response by utilizing electronic patient data distributed across many different sources and locations more effectively. Our preliminary system design is presented and some issues related to it are discussed. © 2005 IEEE.

The authors have successfully demonstrated an alternative method for high yield packaging process, offering a morphological insensitive and wafer level process. It enables not only the encapsulation to be hermetic but also the vias to be electrically-interconnected simultaneously. The mushroom structure of cap wafer makes the seal-line of solder void-free and the assembly process easier in wafer-alignment, giving room for the mismatched-volume between solder and trench. The mushroom structure is formed by SF/sub 6/-based isotropic Si etch and the solder of Sn is electroplated by thick photoresist lithography. The vias are successfully sealed with solders shaped like a dome at the top corner and electrically interconnected. A gross leak detection of pressurized dye-penetration shows that this scheme is morphologically insensitive compared with the "face-to-face" bonding method.

In embedded system development, multi-tasks design is often used on real-time OS or interrupt driven environment. The multi-task programming development gives many advantages for developers. However, tasks should be carefully designed and analyzed to grantee that all concurrently running tasks run without missing timing requirements, also known as deadline. In this research, we investigate different types of real-time scheduling schemes and list their advantages and disadvantages. To be more realistic with real-time scheduling, we performed with a real-time kernel simulator and car-like robot and it's fuzzy logic control simulator. The tutorial presents state-of-the-art visualization techniques inspired by traditional technical and medical illustrations. Such techniques exploit the perception of the human visual system and provide effective visual abstractions to make the visualization clearly understandable. Visual emphasis and abstraction has been used for expressive presentation from prehistoric paintings to nowadays scientific and medical illustrations. Many of the expressive techniques used in art are adopted in computer graphics, and are denoted as illustrative or non-photorealistic rendering. Different stroke techniques, or brush properties express a particular level of abstraction. Feature emphasis or feature suppression is achieved by combining different abstraction levels in illustrative rendering. Challenges in visualization research are very large data visualization as well as multi-dimensional data visualization. To effectively convey the most important visual information there is a significant need for visual abstraction. For less relevant information the dedicated image space is reduced to enhance more prominent features. The discussed techniques in the context of scientific visualization are based on iso-surfaces and volume rendering. Apart from visual abstraction, i.e., illustrative representation, the visibility of prominent features can be achieved by illustrative visualization techniques such as cut-away views or ghosted views. The structures that occlude the most prominent information are suppressed in order to clearly see more interesting parts. A different smart way to provide information on the data is using exploded views or other types of deformation. Furthermore intuitive feature classification via 3D painting and manipulation with the classified data including label placement is presented.
