In this paper, we describe that it is possible to conduct the pretreatment reaction procedure for the disease diagnosis by using just single chip with nanoliter sample consumption. A PDMS micro-pillar with a diameter and height of 30 /spl mu/m was developed for bead platform. The micro reaction chamber that is surrounded by the PDMS pillar structure has 90 nanoliter volume. (3 mm /spl times/ 1 mm /spl times/ 30 /spl mu/m) After filling the reaction chamber with micro beads, biotin, streptavidin and antibody are flowed to react with each other on the bead surface using microfluidic flow. It takes about just 20 minutes to make antibody immobilization. Alpha feto protein (AFP) was tested for the application of our micro chips. Fluorescein conjugated AFP was analyzed with confocal microscope. We successfully demonstrated the AFP detection capability from 10/sup -9/ to 10/sup -6/ g/ml which is over the desired range of AFP concentration in clinic. These bead reactions are 3D reaction unlike the 2D reaction of standard surface immobilization process. Therefore, the consumption of the sample and antibody solution is minimized and the sensitivity is enhanced. In addition, we have investigated the effects of parameters such as flow rate, pH and temperature, which are the crucial reaction parameters. We could also demonstrate that it is possible to concentrate AFP over 50 folded times by continuous AFP flowing while injecting it into microchip.

We propose a low complexity frequency diversity technique for OFDM to improve its error performance in a frequency-selective wireless channel. Recently, linear precoding has been proposed to achieve frequency diversity (multipath diversity) in OFDM, which overcomes the problem of channel nulls (deep fades in frequency-domain). However, currently reported precoding techniques for OFDM have high computational complexity due to associated maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding or pseudo-inverse of large matrices (linear decoding). In the proposed diversity enhanced-OFDM (DE-OFDM), the decoding complexity is minimal as maximum ratio combining (MRC) is incorporated at the receiver to generate a decision variable for each repeatedly transmitted symbol over multiple subcarriers. Moreover, we show that DE-OFDM does not cause any effective data rate (throughput) loss as DE-OFDM using a higher-order modulation scheme (thus the same data rate as conventional OFDM) can provide a better error performance. Both analytical and simulation results are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of DE-OFDM in achieving frequency diversity benefit with low receiver complexity in multipath (frequency-selective) channels. DE-OFDM also outperforms the previously proposed ICI self-cancellation schemes in a frequency-selective fading channel with small frequency offset error.

An arbitrary pattern exposure system has been developed by employing a liquid crystal display (LCD) with 1600 × 1200 pixels for the formation of projection images in place of a conventional reticle. The minimum pattern size becomes 11.5 μm, which corresponds to the aperture size of each pixel on the LCD. For the purpose of quick turnaround time (TAT), the exposure system was directly connected to the circuit design system with the transmission control protocol/internet protocol network. From the experimental results on patterning of a typical electronic circuit data with the area of 46 × 46 mm, it was confirmed that the TAT from the output of design data to the finish of the exposure becomes less than 28 min. By using this system, reduction of the production cost in the printed wiring boards fabrication is expected. © 2005 IEEE.

Discovering unknown adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in postmarketing surveillance as early as possible is highly desirable. In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has provided Web-based forms for spontaneous reporting of possible ADRs. Nevertheless, the process of analyzing and interpreting the reports, collecting additional relevant information, and drawing reliable conclusions requires collaboration between experts with different and complimentary skills (e.g., epidemiologists, biostatisticians, pharmacists and physicians). Multi-agent systems have been shown to be a promising approach for tackling distributed problem solving, especially when data sources and knowledge are distributed, and coordination and collaboration are required. Hence, we propose a team-based multi-agent framework for early detection of ADRs. In this framework, intelligent agents assist a team of experts based on a human decision making model called recognition-primed decision (RPD). Fuzzy logic is used to determine the degree of similarity for retrieving experience in the RPD model. We describe our preliminary system design and illustrate its potential benefits for assisting FDA expert teams in early detection of previously unknown ADRs.

A plasmon-resonant photomixer incorporating a super-grating gate structure of quantum wires with a 100-nm interval can improve the frequency tunability of terahertz radiation. Gate-bias distribution applied to each gate finger can control the periodicity of plasmon resonant cavities. FDTD simulation demonstrated that the radiation power can be enhanced over a wide frequency range by tuning the structure-dependent transmittance-peak frequency to the plasmon resonant frequency of the nature of a plasmon-resonant cavity.

This paper presents the development of the modeling strategy of the human driving behavior based on the expression as Piecewise Linear (PWL) model focusing on the driver’s stopping maneuver. The driving data are collected by using the three-dimensional driving simulator based on CAVE, which provides stereoscopic immersive vision. In our modeling, the relationship between the driver’s sensory information and the operation of the driver such as braking amount is expressed by PWL model, which is a class of Hybrid Dynamical System (HDS). The identification problem for the PWL model is formulated as the Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) by transforming the switching conditions into binary variables. From the obtained results, it is found that the driver appropriately switches the ‘control low’ according to the sensory information. These results enable us to capture not only the physical meaning of the driving skill, but also the decision-making aspect (switching conditions) in the driver’s stopping maneuver.

A home network service middleware called "UKARI-Kernel" has been proposed for distributed and collaborative networked appliances and networked sensors. A home network service can be established by the middleware using distributed function elements on the networked appliances. The middleware uses a service scenario description framework on the basis of BPEL, an XML language to define business processes, to set up the service according to the present situation. In this paper, we describe the overview and of the home network service middleware and its service scenario description. Then implementation of an emulator for the service scenario description framework is reported. It is noted that the proposed description framework can be constructed easily by using the existing toolkits

Recent research in mining user access patterns for predicting Web page requests focuses only on consecutive sequential Web page accesses, i.e., pages which are accessed by following the hyperlinks. In this paper, we propose a new method for mining user access patterns that allows the prediction of multiple non-consecutive Web pages, i.e., any pages within the Web site. Our approach consists of two major steps. First, the shortest path algorithm in graph theory is applied to find the distances between Web pages. In order to capture user access behavior on the Web, the distances are derived from user access sequences, as opposed to static structural hyperlinks. We refer to these distances as minimum reaching distance (MRD) information. The association rule mining (ARM) technique is then applied to form a set of predictive rules which are further refined and pruned by using the MRD information. The proposed approach is applied as a collaborative filtering technique to recommend Web pages within a Web site. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach improves performance over the existing Markov model approach in terms of precision and recall, and also has a better potential of reducing the user access time on the Web

Nominal PbSe nano-islands were grown in the Stranski-Krastanow mode on (111) oriented PbTe/BaF2pseudo-substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The number density and morphology of these islands were assessed by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to determine the strain state and crystallographic structure of these islands. On the basis of both AFM and TEM analyses, we distinguish between different groups of tensibly strained islands. The suggestion is made to use such nano-islands as part of nanometrology standards for scanning probe microscopy.
