This paper introduces a mid-depth text understanding methodology. By mid-depth we mean that the methodology is: (1) based on shallow text understanding, (2) accomplished with currently available linguistic instruments, and (3) focused towards understanding texts as deeply as possible. To realize the methodology, we set up two new linguistic devices for sentence extraction — sentence abstraction and abductive chains. Sentence abstraction is processing for sentence revision with concept abstraction. Abductive chains are lexical chains with abduction. The chain consists of abductive links which connect coherent parts of abstracted sentences. It aims to identify the causal propensity described or implied in the text as well as to delineate its recurring concepts. With this methodology, a preliminary attempt at mid-depth text understanding is made to locate the topic sentences of a given text. We expect that this methodology will lead us to develop another practical text summarization system.

Given a test set for stuck-at faults, a primary input value may be changed to the opposite logic value without losing fault coverage. One can regard such a value as a don't-care (X). The don't care values can be filled appropriately to achieve test compaction, test data compression, or power reduction during testing. However, these uses are better served if the don't cares can be placed in desired/specific bit positions of the test patterns. In this paper, we present a method for maximally fixing Xs on specific bits of given test vectors. Experimental results on ISCAS benchmark circuits show how the proposed method can increase the number of Xs on specific bits compared with an earlier proposed method.

In ad hoc networks, each node utilizes its limited resources to carry out the collective operation of the network. It is not always in the best interests of the network's nodes to demand the continuous participation of all nodes in the network operations. We propose an energy dependent participation (EDP) scheme, where a node periodically re-evaluates its participation in the network based on the residual energy in its battery. More importantly, a node gives special consideration to supporting the communication needs of its active network applications and preventing further network partitioning. EDP's localized partition checking algorithm is particularly well suited for the zone routing protocol, where the link-state information is proactively maintained within each node's local zone and routes to faraway nodes are reactively obtained via global queries. Through simulations, we evaluate the impact of our proposed scheme on battery life and network connectivity. Our results suggest that the EDP scheme can increase the usable lifetime of a battery-constraint ad hoc network by over 50%.

For the development of micro biomedical diagnostic system for endoscopic microcapsule, we have developed micro cell lysis reactor, micro bead affinity chromatography, microneedle, microfluidic devices and micro detection devices. The basic components will be assembled into a micro integrated system, enhancing separation efficiencies and detection systems of target biomolecules.

The bound extends the assertion by Wigner, Araki, and Yanase that conservation laws limit the accuracy of “repeatable,” or “nondisturbing,” measurements to general measurements, and improves the one previously obtained by Yanase for spin measurements.
