We present a broadband adaptive control method for IMT-2000 band multi-carrier power amplifiers adopting feedforward linearization. We have analyzed and implemented an error cancellation detection method employing a frequency hopping pilot and IF synchronous sampling correlator with DSP controller. An adaptive delta-modulated power gradient algorithm is used to adjust the signal and error cancellation loop control parameters. A 2.15 GHz feedforward power amplifier with digital controller is implemented. Band test results show that it covers over a 90 MHz band with more than 50 dBc of IMD at 5 MHz offset frequency for an 8.3 MHz WCDMA signal. The adaptation result shows very fast convergence.

Performance evaluation of equal-gain (EG) diversity systems is notoriously difficult-a classical problem dating back to Lord Rayleigh himself almost a century ago. A number of references to this problem and to its difficulty can be found in the research literature and textbooks. In this paper, we derive exact analytical expressions for the EG receiver performance in Rayleigh, Rician, Nakagami-m and Nakagami-q fading channels in terms of the Appell hypergeometric function. Our methodology and analytical framework can readily handle any order of diversity as well as arbitrary fading statistics (including mixed-fading). The method also applies to a broad class of coherent, differentially coherent and noncoherent modulation formats. For coherent BPSK and BFSK, the solution is particularly simple because a desirable exponential integral representation for the Gaussian probability integral is available.

The authors, six simulation professionals, present their views on the directions that they believe that verification, validation, and accreditation research should take. Two of the six are active verification, validation, and accreditation researchers from academia, two develop industry simulation models, and two work in verification, validation, and accreditation of military simulation models. A number of areas and topics for research in verification, validation, and accreditation are identified. It appears that application domains of simulation models affect what topics need verification, validation, and accreditation research.

Here we present an inexpensive method to fabricate microscopic cellular cultures, which does not require any surface modification of the substrate prior to cell seeding. The method utilizes a reusable elastomeric stencil (i.e., a membrane containing thru holes) which seals spontaneously against the surface. The stencil is applied to the cell-culture substrate before seeding. During seeding, the stencil prevents the substrate from being exposed to the cell suspension except on the hole areas. After cells are allowed to attach and the stencil is peeled off, cellular islands with a shape similar to the holes remain on the cell-culture substrate. This solvent-free method can be combined with a wide range of substrates (including biocompatible polymers, homogeneous or nonplanar surfaces, microelectronic chips, and gels), biomolecules, and virtually any adherent cell type. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Test-cases play an important roll for high quality software testing. Inadequate test-cases may cause bugs remaining after testing. Overlapped test-cases lead to increases in testing costs. The paper proposes a test-case generation method with the EIAG (Event InterActions Graph) and the ISTC (Interaction Sequences Testing Criteria). The EIAG represents behavior of concurrent programs. It consists of Event Graphs and Interactions. An Event Graph is a control flow graph of a program unit in a concurrent program. The Interactions represent interactions (synchronizations, communications and waits) between the program units. The ISTC proposed are based on sequences of Interactions. The cooperated paths (copaths) on the EIAG as test-cases satisfying the ISTC are generated. The generated copaths can detect dead (unreachable) statements which concern interactions, and they can find some communication errors and deadlocks in testing. It is, however, necessary to validate feasibility of the generated copaths. © 1999 IEEE.

We developed an alternate method for density-based load estimation and applied it to estimate hip joint load distributions for two femora. Two-dimensional finite element models were constructed from single energy quantitative computed tomography (QCT) data. Load estimation was performed using five loading regions on the femoral head. Within each loading region, individual nodal loads, normal to the local surface, were supplied as input to the load estimation. An optimization procedure independently adjusted individual nodal load magnitudes in each region, and the magnitudes of muscle forces on the greater trochanter, such that the applied tissue stimulus approached the reference stimulus throughout the model. Dominant estimated load resultant directions were generally consistent with published experimental data for loads during gait. The estimated loads also suggested that loads near the extremes of the articulating surface may be important (even required) for development and maintenance of normal bone architecture. Estimated load distributions within nearly all regions predicted bicentric loading patterns, which are consistent with observations of hip joint incongruity. Remodeling simulations with the estimated loads predicted density distributions with features qualitatively similar to the QCT data sets. This study illustrates how applications of density-based bone load estimation can improve understanding of dominant loading patterns in other bones and joints. The prediction of bicentric loading suggests a very fine level of local adaptation to details of joint loading. © 1999 OPA (Overseas Publishers Association) N.V.

In order to capture the essence of PCS network behaviour, a good mobility model is necessary. This model must be good enough to fit field data and make the resulting queueing model still tractable. We propose a new mobility model, called the hyper-Erlang distribution model, which satisfies the above two requirements. We use this model to characterize the cell residence time and obtain analytical results for the channel holding time, the distribution of which is of primary importance in teletraffic analysis of PCS networks. These results can be used to facilitate the computation together with the use of the partial fractional expansion technique. It is expected that the mobility model and the analytical results for channel holding time presented in this paper will play an significant role for field data processing in PCS network design and performance evaluation.
