From Perception to Action:Brain-to-Brain Information Transmission of Pigeons

Along with the flourishing of brain-computer interface technology,the brain-to-brain information transmission between different organisms has received high attention in recent ***,specific information transmission mode and implementation technology need to be further *** this paper,we constructed a brain-to-brain information transmission system between pigeons based on the neural information decoding and electrical stimulation encoding *** system consists of three parts:(1)the“perception pigeon”learns to distinguish different visual stimuli with two discrepant frequencies,(2)the computer decodes the stimuli based on the neural signals recorded from the“perception pigeon”through a frequency identification algorithm(neural information decoding)and encodes them into different kinds of electrical pulses,(3)the“action pigeon”receives the Intracortical Microstimulation(ICMS)and executes corresponding key-pecking actions through discriminative learning(electrical stimulation encoding).The experimental results show that our brain-to-brain system achieves information transmission from perception to action between two pigeons with the average accuracy of about 72%.Our study verifies the feasibility of information transmission between inter-brain based on neural information decoding and ICMS encoding,providing important technical methods and experimental program references for the development of brain-to-brain communication technology.

This paper addresses an optimal, cooperative output regulation problem for multi-agent systems with distributed denial of service attacks and unknown system dynamics. Unlike existing studies, the proposed solution is essentially a learning-based control strategy such that one can obtain a distributed control policy with internal models through online data and analyze the resilience of closed-loop systems, both without the precise knowledge of system dynamics in the state-space model. The efficiency of the proposed methodology is validated using computer simulations.

The surge of state-of-the-art transformer-based models has undoubtedly pushed the limits of NLP model performance, excelling in a variety of tasks. We cast the spotlight on the underexplored task of Natural Language Inference (NLI), since models trained on popular well-suited datasets are susceptible to adversarial attacks, allowing subtle input interventions to mislead the model. In this work, we validate the usage of natural language explanation as a model-agnostic defence strategy through extensive experimentation: only by fine-tuning a classifier on the explanation rather than premise-hypothesis inputs, robustness under various adversarial attacks is achieved in comparison to explanation-free baselines. Moreover, since there is no standard strategy for testing the semantic validity of the generated explanations, we research the correlation of widely used language generation metrics with human perception, in order for them to serve as a proxy towards robust NLI models. Our approach is resource-efficient and reproducible without significant computational limitations.1 ©2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In today's dynamic energy landscape, Demand Response (DR) programs have become essential for ensuring grid stability and operational efficiency. These programs empower prosumers to adjust their electricity consumption collectively or voluntarily, often against a predefined baseline load. Accurate estimation of this flexibility is pivotal for the success of DR programs, particularly in scenarios where only aggregated building data is available. This study highlights the significance of constructing a building's flexibility baseline load, which approximates its electricity consumption and production in the absence of specific DR events. The deviation of energy consumption and production from this baseline, by predetermined margins, signifies potential flexibility. However, accurately forecasting next-day load variations is essential for evaluating flexibility spread around the baseline. In addressing this need, we employ Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, optimizing their parameters to significantly enhance performance in predicting energy consumption and production for all weekdays. To validate our proposed solution, we conduct real-world experiments using prosumer data collected from a building in Austria. © 2024 IEEE.

Formulations and Approximations of Branch Flow Model for General Power Networks

The formulations and approximations of the branch flow model for general(radial and mesh) power networks(General-BranchFlow) are given in this paper. Using different sets of the power flow equations, six formats of the exact General-BranchFlow model are listed. The six formats are mathematically equivalent with each other. Linear approximation and second-order cone programming(SOCP) are then used to derive the six formats of the convex General-BranchFlow model. The branch ampacity constraints considering the shunt conductance and capacitance of the transmission line Π-model are derived. The key foundation of deriving the ampacity constraints is the correct interpretation of the physical meaning of the transmission line Π-model. An exact linear expression of the ampacity constraints of the power loss variable is derived. The applications of the General-BranchFlow model in deriving twelve formats of the exact optimal power flow(OPF) model and twelve formats of the approximate OPF model are formulated and analyzed. Using the Julia programming language, the extensive numerical investigations of all formats of the OPF models show the accuracy and computational efficiency of the General-BranchFlow model. A penalty function based approximation gap reduction method is finally proposed and numerically validated to improve the AC-feasibility of the approximate General-BranchFlow model.

A sentiment analysis of the Ukraine-Russia War tweets using knowledge graph convolutional networks

Nowadays, social networks play a critical role in online social discourse, particularly during major events such as elections, health crises, and wars. Furthermore, individuals have spent significant time on social networks that consume news and express their opinions and viewpoints on various topics, namely, the Russia-Ukraine War. The Ukraine-Russia War is one of the most complicated and unfortunate events of this decade, with many aspects to be considered to have an informed opinion. For this reason, sentiment analysis research can be useful in analyzing sentiments or opinions about the Ukraine-Russia war, such as Twitter (X) posts. In this study, we propose a new deep learning-based sentiment classification model called "Knowledge Graph Convolutional Networks" that predicts and analyzes sentiments concerning the Russia-Ukraine war. There were 500,000 tweets collected in total, however only 410,428 were left for sentiment analysis after cleaning, lemmatization stemming, and deleting duplicate tweets. Results show that "war", "people", "world", "putin", "energy", "gas", "weapon", and "peace" were some of the most frequently occurring words in the tweets. The main aim of this work is to develop a robust system that provides an understanding of public sentiment towards the Russia-Ukraine war on the X platform. Experimental results demonstrate that it is possible to obtain more accurate sentiment classification results by the proposed method. Inverse kinematics solution for a six-degree-of-freedom upper limb rehabilitation robot using deep learning models

The inverse kinematics problem in serially manipulated upper limb rehabilitation robots implies the usage of the end-effector position to obtain the joint rotation angles. In contrast to the forward kinematics, there are no systematic approaches for solving the inverse kinematics problem. Furthermore, for some morphology of the upper limb rehabilitation robots, the inverse kinematics problem is particularly challenging to solve. Conventional methods to solve the inverse kinematics problem reported in the literature are computationally expensive. In the present work, we propose a deep learning-based model to acquire the joint angles for a given end-effector position. The proposed approach exhibits high efficacy in determining the joint angles for various target positions and can accurately predict the end-effector positions once trained, improving the ability of the upper limb rehabilitation robot to adapt to varying patient needs. Due to its improved capability and effectiveness to track positions, the proposed algorithm lays the foundation for the development of efficient controllers in future. © The Author(s) 2025.

Dear Editor,This letter is concerned with prescribed-time Nash equilibrium(PTNE)seeking problem in a pursuit-evasion game(PEG)involving agents with second-order *** order to achieve the prior-given and user-defined convergence time for the PEG,a PTNE seeking algorithm has been developed to facilitate collaboration among multiple pursuers for capturing the evader without the need for any global ***,it is theoretically proved that the prescribedtime convergence of the designed algorithm for achieving Nash equilibrium of ***,the effectiveness of the PTNE method was validated by numerical simulation results.A PEG consists of two groups of agents:evaders and *** pursuers aim to capture the evaders through cooperative efforts,while the evaders strive to evade *** is a classic noncooperative *** has attracted plenty of attention due to its wide application scenarios,such as smart grids[1],formation control[2],[3],and spacecraft rendezvous[4].It is noteworthy that most previous research on seeking the Nash equilibrium of the game,where no agent has an incentive to change its actions,has focused on asymptotic and exponential convergence[5]-[7].

Stress tolerance plays a vital role in ensuring the effectiveness of piezoresistive sensing films used in flexible pressure ***,existing methods for enhancing stress tolerance employ dome-shaped,wrinkle-shaped,and pyramidal-shaped microstructures in intricate molding and demolding processes,which introduce significant fabrication challenges and limit the sensing *** address these shortcomings,this paper presents periodic microslits in a sensing film made of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and polydimethylsiloxane to realize ultrahigh stress tolerance with a theoretical maximum of 2.477 MPa and a sensitivity of 18.092 kPa−*** periodic microslits permit extensive deformation under high pressure(e.g.,400 kPa)to widen the detection ***,the periodic microslits also enhance the sensitivity based on simultaneously exhibiting multiple synapses within the sensing interface and between the periodic sensing *** proposed solution is verified by experiments using sensors based on the microslit strategy for wind direction detection,robot movement sensing,and human health *** these experiments,vehicle load detection is achieved for ultrahigh pressure sensing under an ultrahigh pressure of over 400 kPa and a ratio of the contact area to the total area of 32.74%.The results indicate that the proposed microslit strategy can achieve ultrahigh stress tolerance while simplifying the fabrication complexity of preparing microstructure sensing films.
