Increased congestion of the electromagnetic spectrum has led to an expanded interest in adaptive spectrum sharing techniques. To opportunistically utilize the spectrum, spectrum sensing techniques can be used to dynamically adapt to the spectrum on a pulse-to-pulse basis within a single coherent processing interval (CPI). Although intra-CPI pulse agility allows for more efficient use of the spectrum, it creates unique processing challenges. By transmitting pulses at different intermediate frequencies (IF) within a CPI, the pulses are no longer strictly coherent and, therefore, traditional range-Doppler processing techniques break down. This paper presents a signal model for frequency adaptive linear frequency modulated (LFM) waveforms and analyzes the impact on the slow time phase history. Additionally, a modified backprojection algorithm is presented that compensates for the distortion caused by the frequency hopping to produce a range-Doppler map with a focused target. In addition to the simulated analysis, this work will conclude with an experiment using frequency agile pulsed radar to measure a moving vehicle utilizing an USRP X310 software-defined radio (SDR) as a radar testbed.

Reversed orbital rotation of dielectric particles induced by coupled-dipoles in focused Gaussian beams

As an important application of optical manipulation, orbital rotation of nanoparticles in optical beams can find uses in constructing micro-motors/micro-machines and the measurement of physical quantity. Here, we report an intriguing orbital rotation of nanoparticles in focused circularly-polarized Gaussian beams at the wavelength scale. Through the transverse scattering forces, off-axis trapping of nanoparticles becomes possible in the off-focal plane, allowing us to create a rotation orbit with a small radius. During the focusing of the incident circularly-polarized Gaussian beam, the spin angular momentum is converted to the orbital angular momentum that drives the particle’s orbital rotation. While gold nanoparticles always show rotation direction that is identical with that of the angular energy flux density under the dipole approximation, high-refractive index silicon nanoparticles can exhibit an opposite rotation direction. This directional inversion is due to the coupling between induced electric and magnetic dipoles in the dielectric particles. By adjusting the particle size and the position of the off-focus plane, the rotation radius and speed can be tuned. This microscale orbital rotation scheme here may advance the development of micro-motor/micro-machines and the investigation of micro-rheology. Our theoretical analysis also sheds what we believe to be new light to the particle dynamics in optical tweezers.

Jointly Optimizing Terahertz based Sensing and Communications in Vehicular Networks: A Dynamic Graph Neural Network Approach

In this paper, the problem of vehicle service mode selection (sensing, communication, or both) and vehicle connections within terahertz (THz) enabled joint sensing and communications over vehicular networks is studied. The considered network consists of several service provider vehicles (SPVs) that can provide: 1) only sensing service, 2) only communication service, and 3) both services, sensing service request vehicles, and communication service request vehicles. Based on the vehicle network topology and their service accessibility, SPVs strategically select service request vehicles to provide sensing, communication, or both services. This problem is formulated as an optimization problem, aiming to maximize the number of successfully served vehicles by jointly determining the service mode of each SPV and its associated vehicles. To solve this problem, we propose a dynamic graph neural network (GNN) model that selects appropriate graph information aggregation functions according to the vehicle network topology, thus extracting more vehicle network information compared to traditional static GNNs that use fixed aggregation functions for different vehicle network topologies. Using the extracted vehicle network information, the service mode of each SPV and its served service request vehicles will be determined. Simulation results show that the proposed dynamic GNN based method can improve the number of successfully served vehicles by up to 17% and 28% compared to a GNN based algorithm with a fixed neural network model and a conventional optimization algorithm without using GNNs. Rapid technological changes are transforming our society with the emergence of new fields like Autonomous Vehicles and Smart Manufacturing, posing new research questions and challenges on system design, operations, security, and training. Researchers rely on testbeds to create experimental scenarios to solve these research challenges. These testbeds aid in data collection, analysis, and observation of the research problem and measure the efficacy of the proposed solution. However, the rapid pace of modern innovation makes it challenging and cost prohibitive for these testbeds to represent state-of-the-art scenarios, which require expensive upgrades and the addition of new capabilities. In addition, a small select community of researchers has access to these specialized testbeds, with the testbeds not used optimally through their small operational *** paper presents FCTaaS: Federated Cybersecurity Testbed as a Service, a scalable framework that allows two separate cybersecurity testbeds to be part of one experiment, overcoming the testbed's geographical boundary to address today's research challenges. This federation allows multiple geographically isolated testbeds to work together to experiment using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), while providing researchers interfaces for testbed discovery and remote experiment design. Our experimental evaluation stress tests the FCTaaS by evaluating its performance in Denial of Service Scenarios on smart infrastructure. The limiting network utilization of 49\%, and low overhead of 1\%, even under such resource-intensive attack scenarios, showcases the efficacy of the FCTaaS to allow improved experimentation. © 2023, The Authors. The clean and renewable nature of energy harvested using the Photovoltaic (PV) technology makes it one the fastest growing technologies used in producing electricity. Due to the relatively low efficiency of the various solar cells available in the market, solar trackers and Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms are used extensively to operate the system at its full potentials. Knowing that such systems are installed in outdoor spaces, they are inevitably subjected to partial shading conditions, where different parts of the system are subjected to different levels of solar irradiance. In case of occurrence of partial shading conditions on a PV system equipped with bypass diodes, the Power-Voltage (P-V) curve will have multiple peaks. This multi-peak curve requires using a sophisticated algorithm to track the Global Maximum Power Point (GMPP) instead of being deceived and trapped in a Local Maximum Power Point (LMPP). In this paper, the Crayfish Optimization Algorithm (COA) is suggested to track the GMPP of a PV system under partial shading conditions. The COA algorithm fetch for the GMPP by reading the PV panel output power and setting accordingly the duty cycle of the buck converter. Simulation is carried out using the MATLAB/Simulink platform and results demonstrate good tracking performance and prove the robustness of the system against rapid variations in solar irradiance levels.

This paper introduces the concept of wireless-powered zero-energy reconfigurable intelligent surface (zeRIS), and investigates a wireless-powered zeRIS aided communication system in terms of security, reliability and energy efficiency. In particular, we propose three new wireless-powered zeRIS modes: 1) in mode-I, N reconfigurable reflecting elements are adjusted to the optimal phase shift design of information user to maximize the reliability of the system;2) in mode-II, N reconfigurable reflecting elements are adjusted to the optimal phase shift design of cooperative jamming user to maximize the security of the system;3) in mode-III, N1 and N2 (N1+N2 = N) reconfigurable reflecting elements are respectively adjusted to the optimal phase shift designs of information user and cooperative jamming user to balance the reliability and security of the system. Then, we propose three new metrics, i.e., joint outage probability (JOP), joint intercept probability (JIP), and secrecy energy efficiency (SEE), and analyze their closed-form expressions in three modes, respectively. The results show that under high transmission power, all the diversity gains of three modes are 1, and the JOPs of mode-I, mode-II and mode-III are improved by increasing the number of zeRIS elements, which are related to N2, N, and N12, respectively. In addition, mode-I achieves the best JOP, while mode-II achieves the best JIP among three modes. We exploit two security-reliability trade-off (SRT) metrics, i.e., JOP versus JIP, and normalized joint intercept and outage probability (JIOP), to reveal the SRT performance of the proposed three modes. It is obtained that mode-II outperforms the other two modes in the JOP versus JIP, while mode-III and mode-II achieve the best performance of normalized JIOP at low and high transmission power, respectively. © 2025, CC BY.

In this paper, a novel fault estimator for wind turbine pitch and drive train system is proposed. The main objective is to estimate actuator and sensor faults along with the system states while mitigating the impact of process disturbances and noises. To accomplish this, an augmented state is created by combining the states of the system and faults. Subsequently, an Unknown Input Observer (UIO) is developed to estimate them simultaneously. The UIO matrices are acquired by optimizing a multi-objective function formed by transforming state and fault estimation errors into the frequency domain using a genetic algorithm. Compared with H∞, the proposed technique shows great superiority in accurately estimating various faults of actuators and sensors. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Nowadays, there is a growing interest in colorizing many grayscales or black and white images dating back to before the colored camera for historical and aesthetic reasons. Image and video colorization can be applied to historical images, natural images, astronomical photography. This paper proposes a fully automated image colorization using a deep learning algorithm. First, the image dataset was selected for training and testing purposes. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was designed with several layers of convolutional and max pooling. Support Vector Machine (SVM) regression was used at the final stage. The proposed algorithm was implemented using Python with Keras and Tensorflow libraries in Google Colab. Results showed that the proposed system could predict the colored image from the training process’s learning knowledge. General optimization framework for accurate and efficient reconstruction of symmetric complex networks from dynamical data

The challenging problem of network reconstruction from dynamical data can in general be formulated as an optimization task of solving multiple linear equations. Existing approaches are of the two types: Point-by-point (PBP) and global methods. The local PBP method is computationally efficient, but the accuracies of its solutions are somehow low, while a global method has the opposite traits: High accuracy and high computational cost. Taking advantage of the network symmetry, we develop a novel framework integrating the advantages of both the PBP and global methods while avoiding their shortcomings: i.e., high reconstruction accuracy is guaranteed, but the computational cost is orders of magnitude lower than that of the global methods in the literature. The mathematical principle underlying our framework is block coordinate descent (BCD) for solving optimization problems, where the various blocks are determined by the network symmetry. The reconstruction framework is validated by numerical examples with a variety of network structures (i.e., sparse and dense networks) and dynamical processes. Our success is a demonstration that the general principle of exploiting symmetry can be extended to tackling the challenging inverse problem or reverse engineering of complex networks. Since solving a large number of linear equations is key to a plethora of problems in science and engineering, our BCD-based network reconstruction framework will find broader applications.
