Nanogrids are small-scale power distribution systems that can operate independently or integrated with the grid like microgrids. These nanogrids can interconnect in a network and have built-in redundancy. This paper investigates the potential of bringing zonal shipboard power ashore with zonal nanogrids to enhance energy reliability at industrial facilities which addresses the limitations of current microgrid systems and emergency backup generators. A reliability analysis is conducted by using the reliability block diagram method to compare microgrid and zonal nanogrid configurations with various control architectures to identify the most reliable solution. The two common types of control strategies are centralized and decentralized. The results indicate that decentralized zonal nanogrids offer higher reliability over a 14-day grid power outage. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to identify the most impactful component in the reliability of zonal nanogrids which is the power transmission lines and fiber optic cables. © 2024 IEEE.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has recently emerged as a transformative paradigm driven by technological advancements. Networks comprised of connected devices face numerous challenges, particularly in facilitating communication among these devices. These challenges arise due to the inherent constraints of IoT, such as limited power and the nature of Low Power and Lossy Networks (LLNs). LLNs require an efficient routing protocol that can cater to the needs of diverse applications while managing these constraints effectively. Over the past few years, The IETF ROLL (Routing Over Low Power and Lossy Networks) working group has developed a new routing protocol, RPL (IPv6 Routing Protocol for LLNs). RPL leverages objective functions to construct and optimize routing paths to ensure efficient data transmission within LLNs. Nevertheless, the IETF ROLL group did not specify the exact number or types of metrics to be employed in these objective functions, leaving room for customization based on specific application requirements. This study delves into the RPL routing protocol, examining its structure and functionality. Furthermore, we propose a novel objective function that integrates multiple metrics to enhance routing performance. The integration of these metrics is accomplished through fuzzy logic, enabling a more flexible and nuanced approach to decision-making in the routing process. This method aims to improve the overall efficiency and reliability of data transmission within LLNs, addressing the unique challenges posed by IoT environments. © 2024 IEEE.

GPU accelerated blockchain over key-value database transactions

Blockchain is a distributed ledger based on peer-to-peer networks, originally used for crypto-currency systems. Blockchains are being used as an enabling technology for decentralised applications in the areas of Internet-of-Things, finance, supply-chain and others. Consistency, data privacy, performance, and energy efficiency are of paramount importance in such applications. The full nodes of public, permissionless blockchains undertake the task of verifying the transactions generated by the network. Full nodes perform operations such as confirming balances, transactions, and history, i.e. mostly database search queries. Consequently, their throughput is crucial for the performance of blockchain systems. In this work, the benefits of accelerating the blockchain search and insert queries by leveraging GPU platforms are studied. An extensive comparison between the most dominant utilized database is provided, i.e. LevelDB, and MegaKV, a high-performance GPU-accelerated database. Realistic operations that take place in blockchain systems are emulated and evaluated over representative scenarios, showing three orders of magnitude gains in throughput and energy efficiency without compromising the security aspect. The extensive comparison between LevelDB and MegaKV indicates that GPU acceleration is an effective solution for runtime and energy efficiency enhancement of blockchain systems, and the integration of the two technologies is a promising field of research. © 2022 The Authors. Exploring the Predictive Capabilities of AlphaFold Using Adversarial Protein Sequences

Protein folding neural networks (PFNNs) such as AlphaFold predict remarkably accurate structures of proteins compared to other approaches. However, the robustness of such networks has heretofore not been fully explored. This is particularly relevant given the broad social implications of such technologies and the fact that biologically small perturbations to noncritical residues of a protein sequence do not typically lead to drastic changes in the protein structure. Our study demonstrates that, similar to adversarial methods in machine learning, small changes to protein sequences can result in significant differences in the predicted protein structures using AlphaFold as determined by large distance measures. Despite this, our findings using multiple protein sequences suggest that AlphaFold is able to accurately predict the domain structure and folding regions of a protein. To gauge structural differences, we employ two alignment-based measures [root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) and the global distance test (GDT) similarity], and one alignment-free measure, which is an effective graph-based structure representation (GraSR) method. We prove that the problem of minimally perturbing protein sequences is NP-complete. Based on the well-established block substitution matrices (BLOSUM62) sequence alignment scoring matrix, we generate adversarial sequences. In our experimental evaluation, we consider 111 proteins (including 29 COVID-19 sequences) in the Universal Protein resource (UniProt), a central resource for protein data. Our findings suggest that, despite the high RMSD values returned by AlphaFold, it is capable of handling the BLOSUM adversarial sequences considered in our analysis, as evidenced by the preservation of the folded regions and the GraSR results. © 2020 IEEE.

Image classification is challenging due to the high dimensionality and large variations of the image data. As an effective method in image classification, feature learning can be considered a multiobjective problem of maximizing the classification accuracy and minimizing the number of learned features. Existing multi-objective genetic programming (MOGP) methods directly apply the multiobjective techniques to GP without considering the characteristics of feature learning tasks. Therefore, this paper proposes a decomposition-based MOGP approach with a global replacement strategy to feature learning in image classification. The proposed approach is compared with existing MOGP methods and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Effective short text classification via the fusion of hybrid features for IoT social data

Nowadays short texts can be widely found in various social data in relation to the 5G-enabled Internet of Things (IoT). Short text classification is a challenging task due to its sparsity and the lack of context. Previous studies mainly tackle these problems by enhancing the semantic information or the statistical information individually. However, the improvement achieved by a single type of information is limited, while fusing various information may help to improve the classification accuracy more effectively. To fuse various information for short text classification, this article proposes a feature fusion method that integrates the statistical feature and the comprehensive semantic feature together by using the weighting mechanism and deep learning models. In the proposed method, we apply Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) to generate word vectors on the sentence level automatically, and then obtain the statistical feature, the local semantic feature and the overall semantic feature using Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) weighting approach, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Bidirectional Gate Recurrent Unit (BiGRU). Then, the fusion feature is accordingly obtained for classification. Experiments are conducted on five popular short text classification datasets and a 5G-enabled IoT social dataset and the results show that our proposed method effectively improves the classification performance.
