Deep Semantic and Attentive Network for Unsupervised Video Summarization

With the rapid growth of video data, video summarization is a promising approach to shorten a lengthy video into a compact version. Although supervised summarization approaches have achieved state-of-the-art performance, they require frame-level annotated labels. Such an annotation process is time-consuming and tedious. In this article, we propose a novel deep summarization framework named Deep Semantic and Attentive Network for Video Summarization (DSAVS) that can select the most semantically representative summary by minimizing the distance between video representation and text representation without any frame-level labels. Another challenge associated with video summarization tasks mainly originates from the difficulty of considering temporal information over a long time. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) performs well for temporal dependencies modeling but does not work well with long video clips. Therefore, we introduce a self-attention mechanism into our summarization framework to capture the long-range temporal dependencies among the frames. Extensive experiments on two popular benchmark datasets, i.e., SumMe and TVSum, show that our proposed framework outperforms other state-of-the-art unsupervised approaches and even most supervised methods. © 2022 Association for Computing Machinery.

Active power decoupling (APD) circuit is of great importance in single-phase photovoltaic (PV) inverter systems for eliminating the fluctuating power drawn from the PV panel. The control of APD circuit is the key to the power decoupling performance and maximum power point tracking (MPPT) efficiency. This paper proposes a control approach for parallel boost type APD circuit with a single sensor, reducing the count of sensors compared to the conventional APD control approach. Operation of the APD circuit with control approach utilizing only the readings from the decoupling capacitor voltage sensor is analyzed in this work. Specifically, controller design for the APD circuit with reduced sensor applicable to a 40 V, 400 W microinverter is presented and experimentally verified with a GaN-based prototype. © 2023 IEEE.

Polarization-spatial modulation (PSM) has been recently proposed to improve the system performance and energy efficiency of the conventional polarization modulation (PM) by activating only a single dual-polarized (DP) antenna for signal transmission. However, the spectral efficiency (SE) of PSM is significantly degraded due to the single DP antenna transmission. To tackle this problem, we propose a generalized PSM (GPSM) scheme to enhance the SE of PSM through transmission using multiple DP antennas. In the GPSM scheme, the information bits are mapped to antenna activation patterns (AAPs), polarization matrix activation patterns (PAPs), and modulated symbols. To further enhance the SE of GPSM, we propose a more practical scheme termed multi-mode GPSM (MM-GPSM), which transmits information bits not only through the AAPs, PAPs, and modulated symbols but also via the constellation activation patterns (CAPs). To reduce the computational burden of the optimal maximum likelihood (ML) detector, we propose a low-complexity ML detector and a log-likelihood ratio (LLR) detector for both GPSM and MM-GPSM, with the negligible performance degradation. A closed-form upper bound on the bit error rate (BER) is derived to evaluate the performance of both GPSM and MM-GPSM. Simulation results demonstrate that GPSM and MM-GPSM outperform conventional PM and PSM schemes, particularly in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, and validate the accuracy of the theoretical BER analysis. © 2014 IEEE.

Extreme heat has become a common phenomenon especially the summer months. Dense urban environments suffer greatly from extreme heat events, which makes the everyday life of citizens difficult. For the more vulnerable population, such as the elderly, extreme heat waves can become dangerous for their health and even lethal. The study employs a Future Heat Risk Index to evaluate potential heat-related vulnerabilities under different climate change scenarios, particularly Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 for the year 2040. Through the integration of climate change projections and spatial analysis, the research identifies areas at high risk of heat-related impacts and prioritizes mitigation strategies. Key findings underscore the importance of proactive planning and adaptation measures in enhancing resilience to extreme heat events, particularly in Mediterranean cities like those in Attica, Greece. The proposed mitigation strategies include implementation of vegetation enhancement and cold materials installation. The effects of both strategies are compared and discussed, highlighting the importance of incorporating climate change scenarios into decision-making processes to safeguard public health and well-being in a warming climate.

Currently, a cloud-edge collaborative system combines almost unlimited storage and computing resources where tasks can be migrated to high-performance servers in edge servers or the cloud. However, resource allocation and task offloading present big challenges due to the competition among mobile devices (MDs) for communication and computing resources of edge servers. Therefore, it is significant to properly offload MDs' tasks to edge servers or the cloud. This work proposes a collaborative edge-cloud architecture, including a centralized cloud, edge servers, and MDs. Then, this work jointly considers computing power, task sizes, computing resources, transmission power of MDs, transmission rates, computing power, transmission power, computing resource of edge servers, and computing resource of the cloud. Considering the abovementioned factors, this work designs a mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. To solve it, a Genetic Simulated annealing-based Particle Swarm Optimization (GSPSO) algorithm is proposed to obtain the best solution. Building upon it, this work proposes an energy-minimized task offloading and resource allocation strategy, thereby minimizing the system's energy consumption while ensuring strict task response time limits. Experimental results show that GSPSO reduces the system's energy by 66.34%, 34.65%, and 4.95% more than particle swarm optimization (PSO), self-adaptive PSO, and Tyrannosaurus optimization. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper highlights the importance of the wake-up receiver in applications using WSN while offering a brief description of this element. In this work, the design of a low-power envelope detector for wake-up receiver applications is presented. By using RF-TSMC CMOS 0.18μm, the proposed envelope circuit is designed for 52 GHz frequency. The forward body biasing method is employed to decrease the circuit energy consumption. The proposed circuit can achieve 152MHz cut-off frequency over the operating frequency range and has power dissipation of 87.5μW under 1V. © 2023 IEEE.

This study presents an experimental investigation of the impulse breakdown characteristics of natural ester oil, in its pure form, and as the base liquid for a nanofluid with Fe203 nanoparticles (0.050% w/w). A two-stage impulse voltage generator and a combination wave generator have been used to determine the distribution of the breakdown voltage and time to breakdown; a standard test-cell per IEC 60897 and a custom-made metal fixture were employed for that purpose. Experimental results are discussed with emphasis given to the response time of the iron oxide nanofluid when compared to the base liquid.

A hybrid attention deep learning network for refined segmentation of cracks from shield tunnel lining images

This research developed a hybrid position-channel network (named PCNet) through incorporating newly designed channel and position attention modules into U-Net to alleviate the crack discontinuity problem in channel and spatial dimensions. In PCNet, the U-Net is used as a baseline to extract informative spatial and channel-wise features from shield tunnel lining crack images. A channel and a position attention module are designed and embedded after each convolution layer of U-Net to model the feature interdependencies in channel and spatial dimensions. These attention modules can make the U-Net adaptively integrate local crack features with their global dependencies. Experiments were conducted utilizing the dataset based on the images from Shanghai metro shield tunnels. The results validate the effectiveness of the designed channel and position attention modules, since they can individually increase balanced accuracy (BA) by 11.25% and 12.95%, intersection over union (IoU) by 10.79% and 11.83%, and F1 score by 9.96% and 10.63%, respectively. In comparison with the state-of-the-art models (i.e. LinkNet, PSPNet, U-Net, PANet, and Mask R–CNN) on the testing dataset, the proposed PCNet outperforms others with an improvement of BA, IoU, and F1 score owing to the implementation of the channel and position attention modules. These evaluation metrics indicate that the proposed PCNet presents refined crack segmentation with improved performance and is a practicable approach to segment shield tunnel lining cracks in field practice.
