Equality constraints of zero-injection buses and operation of coupling devices are essential for accurate state estimation (SE) of integrated energy networks. However, existing robust SE algorithms cannot handle robustness to bad data and equality constraints simultaneously. A robust state estimation method based on constrained iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) is proposed in this paper for integrated electricity-gas systems (IEGSs). Firstly, a robust SE model based on Huber M-estimation is established considering zero-injection equality constraints and coupling constraints of gas-fired power generation, power to gas devices, etc. Then, a novel constrained IRLS algorithm is proposed to solve the model, which combines advantages of the Lagrange multiplier method for equality constrained nonlinear programming problems and the IRLS algorithm for unconstrained robust SE problems. The drawback that traditional IRLS algorithm cannot handle equality constraints is therefore solved. The proposed constrained IRLS algorithm can be naturally generalized to robust SE of general energy systems. Test results on a typical IEGS system demonstrate that the proposed model and algorithm is superior than the weighted least absolute value estimation in the aspect of estimation accuracy, robustness and computational speed. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents the technical and impact potential assessment provided for selected circular economy projects by DEFINITE-CCRI. Among the main goals of the methodology employed in the DEFINITE-CCRI project are the support of the selected projects enabling them to become more attractive to investors and gain funding and the overall bridging of the gap between the circularity-based innovation and the financing available for its development. The DEFINITE-CCRI impact assessment methodology has been developed based on the 9R strategies, according to which specific indicators have been chosen and tailored to fit the particularities of the projects under assessment and to shed light on their environmental, social, and macro-economic impacts. © 2024 IEEE.

This article focuses on reactive power compensation and impedance matching of square-wave voltages. Square-wave voltage is the operating voltage in electromagnetic method (EM) exploration. The characteristics of a square-wave voltage are very different from those of a sinusoidal voltage in the power grid. Although some papers proposed impedance matching converters for square-wave voltages, they solved the high dc voltage requirement problem. The problem is caused by square-wave voltage having multiple and variable spectral components. An impedance-matching converter with an injection circuit (IMFR) for square-wave voltage is proposed. IMFR is composed of a thyristor-controlled inductor and capacitor (TCLC) part and injection circuit coupling active H-bridge part. TCLC can be controlled to resonate at the highest energy fundamental frequency for damping the largest part of the dc voltage requirement. The use of TCLC offsets the varying fundamental frequency demand on the dc voltage. First, this article gives a joint design and optimization approach for the lowest dc voltage requirement. Second, a synergistic control method of proposed IMFR is provided implementing IMFR. Third, two groups of comparative experiments show that the proposed IMFR can enlarge the current by 11.8%-38.5%. The effect on the current increase is 4.4%-7.9% higher than using only the H-bridge of the previous method when they are operated with the same dc voltage. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

An experimental investigation is presented on the flashover characteristics of a typical 24 kV silicone line pin insulator under lightning impulses 0.34/47 μs, by considering the amplitude and polarity of the applied voltage as influencing parameters. Based on the oscillographic records of the applied voltage and discharge current different phases of discharge growth could be discerned. Thus, inception, growth and flashover discharge characteristics are assessed and discussed. Increasing amplitude of the applied voltage causes more intense streamer corona activity, which, associated with greater charge, exerts a hindering effect on leader inception, the latter occurring at higher voltages. This is more pronounced for negative impulse voltages under which corona initiates at higher voltage and with higher current, thus also charge. At a given leader inception voltage the charge related to the streamer corona activity preceding leader inception is lower under negative impulses, possibly due to negative surface discharges and charge deposition on the insulator surface, suppressing the growth of streamer corona in air. The average potential gradient required for leader inception at 2.5% flashover probability was estimated approximately 690 and 1050 kV/m under positive and negative polarity impulses, respectively. At a given steepness of the applied voltage at leader inception the charge associated with leader growth is approximately two times larger for negative than positive impulses. The charge at flashover increases linearly with the steepness of the applied voltage at leader inception. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

The necessity of installing an LPS at the Zalongo monument in Greece is evaluated. Two cases of isolated LPS are examined with respect to the efficiency of their air terminal. Both passive and non-conventional air terminals are evaluated considering the same location of installation and height;the non-conventional air terminal (ESE) is currently installed in the monument. A stochastic lightning attachment model is employed to estimate lightning incidence to the monument and evaluate the efficiency of the air-termination systems. The model considers the physical processes involved in lightning attachment following a probabilistic approach. Based on the model, direct lightning strikes to the monument are obtained;these may explain the photographically recorded damages caused by lightning prior to installing an LPS. The lightning protection efficiency of the ESE air terminal is insignificantly affected by its time of advance of the upward leader and, more importantly, is similar to that found for the passive air terminal. Therefore also, the estimated risk of loss of cultural heritage does not differ between the passive and ESE air terminals. A new LPS design for the Zalongo monument is required, based on IEC 62305, to enhance the safety of visitors and the preservation of its cultural heritage. © 2024 IEEE, © VDE VERLAG GMBH ∙ Berlin ∙ Offenbach.

Wireless Sensor Actuator Networks (WSANs) are sensitive to cyber threats due to present static encryption techniques. Adaptive security methods are required in WSAN settings to reduce evolving dangers and maintain data integrity. The paper introduces a novel method for encrypting WSAN data using AI and machine learning. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks process data, Genetic Algorithms (GAs) optimize encryption, and Isolation Forests detect threats in real-time. The proposed system achieved remarkable performance, with scores of 98% data integrity, 96% error repair, and 95% threat detection accuracy. Encryption rates reach their max at 200 Mbps, with optimal resource usage (30% CPU, 25% RAM) and a 5% false positive rate. The proposed AI-driven security architecture improves data integrity, encryption speed, and overall security efficacy in WSANs, surpassing existing methods. The paper overcomes the limitations of static encryption methods and proposes a proactive protection mechanism against developing cyber threats, making a substantial contribution to WSAN security improvement. © 2024 IEEE.

Facial Action Unit (AU) detection is a crucial task in affective computing and social robotics as it helps to identify emotions expressed through facial expressions. Anatomically, there are innumerable correlations between AUs, which contain rich information and are vital for AU detection. Previous methods used fixed AU correlations based on expert experience or statistical rules on specific benchmarks, but it is challenging to comprehensively reflect complex correlations between AUs via hand-crafted settings. There are alternative methods that employ a fully connected graph to learn these dependencies exhaustively. However, these approaches can result in a computational explosion and high dependency with a large dataset. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel self-adjusting AU-correlation learning (SACL) method with less computation for AU detection. This method adaptively learns and updates AU correlation graphs by efficiently leveraging the characteristics of different levels of AU motion and emotion representation information extracted in different stages of the network. Moreover, this paper explores the role of multi-scale learning in correlation information extraction, and design a simple yet effective multi-scale feature learning (MSFL) method to promote better performance in AU detection. By integrating AU correlation information with multi-scale features, the proposed method obtains a more robust feature representation for the final AU detection. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on widely used AU detection benchmark datasets, with only 28.7% and 12.0% of the parameters and FLOPs of the best method, respectively. This work investigates the efficacy of different experimental and simulation methodologies in determining the parasitic inductance of surge protective devices for a broad frequency spectrum. This is important since the inductive behavior of surge protective devices affects their maximum residual voltage, thus also the protection offered in the case of fast-front transients exhibiting high current derivatives. The parasitic inductance of a commercially available DIN rail surge protective device is determined by utilizing a dummy surge protective device with the voltage limiting component (varistor) replaced by a copper block. Parasitic inductance estimations are made by employing: i) dielectric spectroscopy measurements, ii) impulse current tests, and iii) finite element analysis simulations;results are discussed in terms of the accuracy of the proposed methods and associated challenges in determining the parasitic inductance. © 2024 IEEE, © VDE VERLAG GMBH ∙ Berlin ∙ Offenbach.

Colon and lung cancers are responsible for the deaths of thousands of people worldwide every year. Early detection of these cancers can significantly increase the chances of recovery. This is achieved by analyzing histopathological images. This task has traditionally been performed by manual methods. As a result, the results of these analysis are highly dependent on the skills and professional experience of the pathologist, consuming time and manpower. Several studies have attempted to automate this task using deep learning techniques, in particular the convolutional neural network (CNN) models. In this paper, in order to enhance the classification performances on LC25000 histopathological images, we used transfer learning techniques to train three models based on the pre-trained models: VGG, ResNet and DenseNet. Next, we created a model based on the ensemble learning technique in order to enhance the classification performance of these images. This model successfully improved classification performances by achieving an accuracy of 97.4% on test data, 97% on training data and 97.5% on validation data. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the effect of combining transfer learning and ensemble learning techniques in improving the performances of colon and lung cancer histopathological image classification. © 2024 ACM.
