Mining Repetitive Negative Sequential Patterns with Gap Constraints

Sequential pattern mining (SPM) with gap constraints (or repetitive SPM or tandem repeat discovery in bioinformatics) can find frequent repetitive subsequences satisfying gap constraints, which are called positive sequential patterns with gap constraints (PSPGs). However, classical SPM with gap constraints cannot find the frequent missing items in the PSPGs. To tackle this issue, this article explores negative sequential patterns with gap constraints (NSPGs). We propose an efficient NSPG-Miner algorithm that can mine both frequent PSPGs and NSPGs simultaneously. To effectively reduce candidate patterns, we propose a pattern join strategy with negative patterns which can generate both positive and negative candidate patterns at the same time. To calculate the support (frequency of occurrence) of a pattern in each sequence, we explore a NegPair algorithm that employs a key-value pair array structure to deal with the gap constraints and the negative items simultaneously and can avoid redundant rescanning of the original sequence, thus improving the efficiency of the algorithm. To report the performance of NSPG-Miner, 11 competitive algorithms and 11 datasets are employed. The experimental results not only validate the effectiveness of the strategies adopted by NSPG-Miner but also verify that NSPG-Miner can discover more valuable information than the state-of-the-art algorithms. Artificial intelligence has made remarkable advancements in recent years, leading to the development of algorithms and models capable of handling ever-increasing amounts of data. The computational demands of these algorithms necessitate circuit and architecture designs that go beyond the von-Neumann paradigm. Content addressable memories (CAMs), which implement parallel associative search functionality within memory blocks to overcome the memory wall bottleneck, have proven to be effective for data-intensive tasks. While current CAM designs have achieved higher storage density and energy efficiency than their CMOS-based counterparts by leveraging emerging nonvolatile memories (NVM), most of these implementations are limited to binary storage cells. In this work, we propose SEE-MCAM, scalable and compact multi-bit CAM (MCAM) designs that utilize the three-terminal ferroelectric FET (FeFET) as the proxy. By exploiting the multi-level-cell characteristics of FeFETs, our proposed SEE-MCAM designs enable multi-bit associative search functions and achieve better energy efficiency and performance than existing FeFET-based CAM designs. We validated the functionality of our proposed designs by achieving 3 bits per cell CAM functionality, resulting in 3× improvement in storage density. The area per bit of the proposed SEE-MCAM cell is 8% of the conventional CMOS CAM. We thoroughly investigated the scalability and robustness of the proposed design. Evaluation results suggest that the proposed 2FeFET-1T SEE-MCAM achieves 9.8× more energy efficiency and 1.6× less search latency compared to the CMOS CAM, respectively. When compared to existing MCAM designs, the proposed SEE-MCAM can achieve 8.7× and 4.9× more energy efficiency than ReRAM-based and FeFET-based MCAMs, respectively. Bipolar medium-voltage dc (MVDC) distribution systems are of great interests nowadays due to its high availability and reliability. A bipolar MVDC grid can be established by the installation of power-balancers or directly by converters with inherent bipolar operation capability to avoid the extra cost and volume. Therefore, this paper proposes a modular multilevel dc-dc converter (MMDC) with inherent bipolar operation capability for the interconnection of bipolar MVDC grids and LVDC girds. Considering that the MMDC is normally only capable of operating with monopole MVDC distribution systems due to the symmetric structure and operation scheme, a center-tapped high-frequency interface transformer is employed on the MV side of the MMDC. Based on the concept of the flux dc-bias cancellation, a dedicated operation method is proposed, whereby the power flows of the two MVDC poles can be regulated independently with a simple control scheme, and no penalty of increased current rating is imposed on the semiconductor devices or the interface transformer compared to the conventional MMDC with monopole operation. Additionally, the MMDC can realize single-pole operation in case one pole is faulty and deliver at least 50% of the rated power capacity, which significantly enhance the reliability and availability of the power delivery. The validity of the proposed bipolar operation scheme of the MMDC has been verified by both simulations and experiments with a down-scale prototype.

In multi-site brain disease diagnosis studies, traditional centralized training methods necessitate sharing medical data, posing significant privacy risks. Federated learning (FL) offers a privacy-preserving solution by enabling global model training through aggregating locally trained models from multiple data centers without sharing raw data. However, current FL approaches rely on a server-based network topology, where central server failure disrupts training. Additionally, data heterogeneity across sites often slows convergence and reduces accuracy. To overcome these issues, we introduce a decentralized personalized federated learning collaborative aggregation network (pFedCAN). This framework has two core components: (1) separating local models into shared and personalized layers, and (2) forming a collaborative aggregation network via similarity detection in the shared layers. Specifically, each center trains its local model, then separates it into shared and personalized layers. The shared layer is exchanged with other centers, while the personalized layer remains local. Data centers analyze similarities in received shared layers to build a collaborative network, where shared layers from similar centers are aggregated to refine the model. This approach flexibly adapts to varying levels of data heterogeneity, enhancing model training efficiency. Validation on public datasets, ABIDE I and ADHD, shows that the proposed method outperforms current leading techniques.

Recently, the performance of Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) has been significantly improved by injecting knowledge facts to enhance their abilities of language understanding. For medical domains, the background knowledge sources are especially useful, due to the massive medical terms and their complicated relations are difficult to understand in text. In this work, we introduce SMedBERT, a medical PLM trained on large-scale medical corpora, incorporating deep structured semantics knowledge from neighbours of linked-entity. In SMedBERT, the mention-neighbour hybrid attention is proposed to learn heterogeneous-entity information, which infuses the semantic representations of entity types into the homogeneous neighbouring entity structure. Apart from knowledge integration as external features, we propose to employ the neighbors of linked-entities in the knowledge graph as additional global contexts of text mentions, allowing them to communicate via shared neighbors, thus enrich their semantic representations. Experiments demonstrate that SMedBERT significantly outperforms strong baselines in various knowledge-intensive Chinese medical tasks. It also improves the performance of other tasks such as question answering, question matching and natural language inference. © 2021 Association for Computational Linguistics

With rapidly increasing distributed deep learning workloads in large-scale data centers, efficient distributed deep learning framework strategies for resource allocation and workload scheduling have become the key to high-performance deep learning. The large-scale environment with large volumes of datasets, models, and computational and communication resources raises various unique challenges for resource allocation and workload scheduling in distributed deep learning, such as scheduling complexity, resource and workload heterogeneity, and fault tolerance. To uncover these challenges and corresponding solutions, this survey reviews the literature, mainly from 2019 to 2024, on efficient resource allocation and workload scheduling strategies for large-scale distributed DL. We explore these strategies by focusing on various resource types, scheduling granularity levels, and performance goals during distributed training and inference processes. We highlight critical challenges for each topic and discuss key insights of existing technologies. To illustrate practical large-scale resource allocation and workload scheduling in real distributed deep learning scenarios, we use a case study of training large language models. This survey aims to encourage computer science, artificial intelligence, and communications researchers to understand recent advances and explore future research directions for efficient framework strategies for large-scale distributed deep learning. © 2024, CC BY.

As a form of artificial intelligence (AI) technology based on interactive learning, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has been widely applied across various fields and has achieved remarkable accomplishments. However, DRL faces certain limitations, including low sample efficiency and poor generalization. Therefore, we present how to leverage generative AI (GAI) to address these issues above and enhance the performance of DRL algorithms in this paper. We first introduce several classic GAI and DRL algorithms and demonstrate the applications of GAI-enhanced DRL algorithms. Then, we discuss how to use GAI to improve DRL algorithms from the data and policy perspectives. Subsequently, we introduce a framework that demonstrates an actual and novel integration of GAI with DRL, i.e., GAI-enhanced DRL. Additionally, we provide a case study of the framework on UAV-assisted integrated near-field/far-field communication to validate the performance of the proposed framework. Model-free Learning of Corridor Clearance: A Near-term Deployment Perspective

An emerging public health application of connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies is to reduce response times of emergency medical service (EMS) by indirectly coordinating traffic. Therefore, in this work we study the CAV-assisted corridor clearance for EMS vehicles from a short term deployment perspective. Existing research on this topic often overlooks the impact of EMS vehicle disruptions on regular traffic, assumes 100% CAV penetration, relies on real-time traffic signal timing data and queue lengths at intersections, and makes various assumptions about traffic settings when deriving optimal model-based CAV control strategies. However, these assumptions pose significant challenges for near-term deployment and limit the real-world applicability of such methods. To overcome these challenges and enhance real-world applicability in near-term, we propose a model-free approach employing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for designing CAV control strategies, showing its reduced overhead in designing and greater scalability and performance compared to model-based methods. Our qualitative analysis highlights the complexities of designing scalable EMS corridor clearance controllers for diverse traffic settings in which DRL controller provides ease of design compared to the model-based methods. In numerical evaluations, the model-free DRL controller outperforms the model-based counterpart by improving traffic flow and even improving EMS travel times in scenarios when a single CAV is present. Across 19 considered settings, the learned DRL controller excels by 25% in reducing the travel time in six instances, achieving an average improvement of 9%. These findings underscore the potential and promise of model-free DRL strategies in advancing EMS response and traffic flow coordination, with a focus on practical near-term deployment.
