The emerging artificial intelligence (AI) puts forward high requirement for big data acquisition, which is difficult to be met with the existing communication technologies in real time. In this paper, we investigate new graph learning based access management scheme for supporting the real-time big data acquisition in the sixth-generation mobile communication system (6G). We model the network scene with a mass of communication links as a fully connected graph which takes into account the accumulative interference of all links. Then, the joint admission and power control problem is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem. We propose a graph attention network (GAT) based algorithm which can learn the system features by weighted aggregation of neighbor nodes. In addition, we construct a differentiable loss function that can accurately express the optimization objective and train the network by the change of loss. Based on the output of the GAT, we iteratively optimize the link admission and power to active more links. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is superior to the traditional convex optimization based algorithms and the nonmodified GAT based algorithms in the number of activated links. Moreover, the training of the constructed network is unsupervised with high computational efficiency, which makes them suitable for the big data access management.

As an important component of the space-air-ground integrated network, aerial base station (AeBS) systems have gained significant attention for their flexibility in mobility and cost-effective construction. Nevertheless, the scarce spectrum resources and difficulty in accessing global information bring necessity and challenges to the deployment and resource allocation of AeBSs. In this paper, we propose a practical two-timescale framework to solve the resource allocation and deployment optimization problem in multi-AeBS networks. Specifically, the subcarrier allocation problem is first transformed into a many-to-one matching game coupled with power allocation and solved in a small timescale. Then, in a large timescale, the AeBS deployment subproblem is transformed into a distributed partially observable Markov decision process (Dec-POMDP), and then a novel multi-agent hypergraph convolutional deep reinforcement learning (MAHGCDRL) is proposed to solve this problem. The proposed MAHGCDRL extracts features of neighboring AeBSs through hypergraph convolutional networks, enabling AeBS agents to achieve better coordination in a distributed manner. Simulation results show that our proposed approach can attain a higher sum rate, and the proposed MAHGCDRL algorithm achieves better learning performance compared to the existing benchmarks in the literature. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIMs) have recently gained significant interest since they enable precoding in the wave domain that comes with increased processing capability and reduced energy consumption. The study of SIMs and high frequency propagation make the study of the performance in the near field of crucial importance. Hence, in this work, we focus on SIM-assisted multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in the near field region. To this end, we formulate the weighted sum rate maximisation problem in terms of the transmit power and the phase shifts of the SIM. By applying a block coordinate descent (BCD)-relied algorithm, numerical results show the enhanced performance of the SIM in the near field with respect to the far field. © 2024, CC BY.

This research analyses the complex dynamics of Cyber-Physical-Social systems (CPSS), encompassing cyber-physical systems, cybersecurity, the Internet of Things (IoT), and social media. By exploring the interactions among these elements, this study analyses the vulnerabilities, risks, and potential benefits within the CPSS framework. This research study analyses the evolving landscape of cybersecurity by considering various aspects such as data integrity, privacy in the IoT era, and the influence of social media on user behaviour and influence dynamics. The study also introduces innovative strategies to enhance CPSS resilience, including methods to mitigate cyber threats and enhance overall system integrity. Additionally, we investigate how social media shapes CPSS behaviours, offering valuable insights into influence dynamics. This research advances the comprehensive understanding of CPSS to support future studies and advancements in the protection and improvement of interconnected systems.

Although reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology for shaping the propagation environment, it consists of a single-layer structure within inherent limitations regarding the number of beam steering patterns. Based on the recently revolutionary technology, denoted as stacked intelligent metasurface (SIM), we propose its implementation not only on the base station (BS) side in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) setup but also in the intermediate space between the base station and the users to adjust the environment further as needed. For the sake of convenience, we call the former BS SIM (BSIM), and the latter channel SIM (CSIM). To this end, we achieve hybrid wave-based combining at the BS and wave-based configuration at the intermediate space. Specifically, we propose a channel estimation method with reduced overhead, being crucial for SIM-assisted communications. Next, we derive the uplink sum spectral efficiency (SE) in closed form in terms of statistical channel state information (CSI). Notably, we optimize the phase shifts of both BSIM and CSIM simultaneously by using the projected gradient ascent method (PGAM). Compared to previous works on SIMs, we study the uplink transmission in a mMIMO setup, channel estimation in a single phase, a second SIM at the intermediate space, and simultaneous optimization of the two SIMs. Simulation results show the impact of various parameters on the sum SE, and demonstrate the superiority of our optimization approach compared to the alternating optimization (AO) method. © 2024, CC BY.

Face recognition in the wild is now advancing towards light-weight models, fast inference speed and resolution-adapted capability. In this paper, we propose a bridge distillation approach to turn a complex face model pretrained on private high-resolution faces into a light-weight one for low-resolution face recognition. In our approach, such a cross-dataset resolution-adapted knowledge transfer problem is solved via two-step distillation. In the first step, we conduct cross-dataset distillation to transfer the prior knowledge from private high-resolution faces to public high-resolution faces and generate compact and discriminative features. In the second step, the resolution-adapted distillation is conducted to further transfer the prior knowledge to synthetic low-resolution faces via multi-task learning. By learning low-resolution face representations and mimicking the adapted high-resolution knowledge, a light-weight student model can be constructed with high efficiency and promising accuracy in recognizing low-resolution faces. Experimental results show that the student model performs impressively in recognizing low-resolution faces with only 0.21M parameters and 0.057MB memory. Meanwhile, its speed reaches up to 14,705, 934 and 763 faces per second on GPU, CPU and mobile phone, respectively. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper investigates the effect of low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) on device activity detection in massive machine-type communications (mMTC). The low-resolution ADCs induce two challenges on the device activity detection compared with the traditional setup with the assumption of infinite ADC resolution. First, the codebook design for signal quantization by the low-resolution ADC is particularly important since a good design of the codebook can lead to small quantization error on the received signal, which in turn has significant influence on the activity detector performance. To this end, prior information about the received signal power is needed, which depends on the number of active devices K. This is sharply different from the activity detection problem in traditional setups, in which the knowledge of K is not required by the BS as a prerequisite. Second, the covariance-based approach achieves good activity detection performance in traditional setups while it is not clear if it can still achieve good performance in this paper. To solve the above challenges, we propose a communication protocol that consists of an estimator for K and a detector for active device identities: 1) For the estimator, the technical difficulty is that the design of the ADC quantizer and the estimation of K are closely intertwined and doing one needs the information/execution from the other. We propose a progressive estimator which iteratively performs the estimation of K and the design of the ADC quantizer;2) For the activity detector, we propose a custom-designed stochastic gradient descent algorithm to estimate the active device identities. Simulations are commonly used to develop and evaluate video encryption algorithms. Although these approaches are useful for demonstrating theoretical feasibility and algorithm performance, they neglect practical challenges and real-world communication conditions. This oversight creates a critical gap in evaluating their effectiveness and security in practical applications. In this paper, we describe a novel, to the best of our knowledge, video encryption scheme that employs a modified chaotic Colpitts oscillator, a customized Josephus problem, and ribonucleic acid (RNA) operations, and is implemented in visible light communication (VLC) environment. The modified Colpitts oscillator reveals significant phenomena, the most prominent for this study being chaos. The encryption scheme involves block scrambling and pixel-level permutation employing a customized Josephus problem and a column and row shifting technique. Diffusion is then achieved through a custom Josephus problem-oriented RNA operation combined with basic RNA operations and cipher block chaining (CBC). Based on the results, we found that the customized Josephus problem-based permutation performed more efficiently than traditional methods, whereas the column and row shifting permutation was more robust. By eliminating key sequence coding and item-to-item operations, the proposed RNA operation reduces computational overhead. This video encryption scheme is proven to be effective and resilient at securing video data transmitted over the VLC channel, and it constitutes a significant advancement in areas such as surveillance, medical imaging, and military communication requiring robust secured video data. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group.
