This paper presents a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) based regression model for characterizing materials at micrwave frequency range. A mathematical model and experimental setup of the Open-Ended Coaxial Probe (OECP) sensor interacting with the material under test (MUT) generate a cross-dataset to validate the MLP regression model, utilizing the frequency-dependent complex dielectric constant for material characterization. This paper utilizes the frequency-dependent response of the OECP sensor (scattering parameters) as input features for the MLP model, while the complex dielectric constant of the MUT serves as the output feature. The optimized MLP model has an $R^{2}$ of 99.991% and MSE of $6.65 \times 10^{-5}$ , with predictions closely aligning with literature values for standard loads such as distilled water, acetone, and ethanol, obtained using a commercially available dielectric assessment software kit. This cost-effective model enables precise dielectric property estimation, with future work extending to unknown materials, mixtures, and electrolyte solutions.

Changes in coal seam hardness cause fluctuations in the feed resistance at the drill bit during the drilling process, leading to unstable feeding speed. This paper proposes a robust dynamic output feedback controller to suppress disturbances caused by the variations in coal seam hardness in the feed system. Firstly, an unknown parameter measuring coal seam hardness is introduced, and an uncertain model of the feeding system is established based on the finite element model of the drill string. By designing weighted functions based on industrial field requirements and constructing a generalized plant, the controller achieves loop shaping, reducing the low-frequency impact of coal seam hardness variations on the feed system and suppressing the systems resonance peak. Simulation results demonstrate that the controller effectively suppresses parameter variations and external disturbances caused by changes in coal seam hardness, achieving stable control of the drilling speed.

Cross-Modal Generative Semantic Communications for Mobile AIGC: Joint Semantic Encoding and Prompt engineering

Employing massive Mobile AI-Generated Content (AIGC) Service Providers (MASPs) with powerful models, high-quality AIGC services can become accessible for resource-constrained end users. However, this advancement, referred to as mobile AIGC, also introduces a significant challenge: users should download large AIGC outputs from the MASPs, leading to substantial bandwidth consumption and potential transmission failures. In this paper, we apply cross-modal Generative Semantic Communications (G-SemCom) in mobile AIGC to overcome wireless bandwidth constraints. Specifically, we utilize a series of cross-modal attention maps to indicate the correlation between user prompts and each part of AIGC outputs. In this way, the MASP can analyze the prompt context and filter the most semantically important content efficiently. Only semantic information is transmitted, with which users can recover the entire AIGC output with high quality while saving mobile bandwidth. Since the transmitted information not only preserves the semantics but also prompts the recovery, we formulate a joint semantic encoding and prompt engineering problem to optimize the bandwidth allocation among users. Particularly, we present a human-perceptual metric named Joint Perpetual Similarity and Quality (JPSQ), which is fused by two learning-based measurements regarding semantic similarity and aesthetic quality, respectively. Furthermore, we develop the Attention-aware Deep Diffusion (ADD) algorithm, which learns attention maps and leverages the diffusion process to enhance the environment exploration ability of traditional deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposal can reduce the bandwidth consumption of mobile users by 49.4% on average, with almost no perceptual difference in AIGC output quality. Background: The determination of the mechanical properties of biological samples using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) at the nanoscale is usually performed using basic models arising from the contact mechanics theory. In particular, the Hertz model is the most frequently used theoretical tool for data processing. However, the Hertz model requires several assumptions, such as homogeneous and isotropic samples and indenters with perfectly spherical or conical shapes. As it is widely known, none of these requirements are 100 % fulfilled for the case of indentation experiments at the nanoscale. As a result, significant errors arise in the Young’s modulus calculation. At the same time, an analytical model that could account complexities of soft biomaterials, such as nonlinear behavior, anisotropy, and heterogeneity, may be far-reaching. In addition, this hypothetical model would be ‘too difficult’ to be applied in real clinical activities since it would require a very heavy workload and highly specialized personnel. Objective: In this paper, a simple solution is provided to the aforementioned dead-end. A new approach is introduced in order to provide a simple and accurate method for mechanical characterization at the nanoscale. Method: The ratio of the work done by the indenter on the sample of interest to the work done by the indenter on a reference sample is introduced as a new physical quantity that does not require homogeneous, isotropic samples or perfect indenters. Results: The proposed approach provides an accurate solution from not only a physical perspective but also a simpler solution which does not require activities such as the determination of the cantilever’s spring constant and the dimensions of the AFM tip. Conclusion: It has been observed from this opinion paper that the solution aims to provide a significant opportunity to overcome the existing limitations provided by Hertzian mechanics and apply AFM techniques in real clinical activities. © 2021 Bentham

Microcombs are revolutionizing optoelectronics by providing parallel, mutually coherent wavelengthchannels for time-frequency metrology and information processing. To implement this essential function inintegrated photonic systems, it is desirable to drive microcombs directly with an on-chip laser in a simpleand flexible way. However, two major difficulties have prevented this goal: (1) generating mode-lockedcomb states usually requires a significant amount of pump power and (2) the requirement to align laser andresonator frequency significantly complicates operation and limits the tunability of the comb lines. Here, weaddress these problems by using microresonators on an AlGaAs on-insulator platform to generate dark-pulsemicrocombs. This highly nonlinear platform dramatically relaxes fabrication requirements and leads to arecord-low pump power of <1 mW for coherent comb generation. Dark-pulse microcombs facilitated bythermally controlled avoided mode crossings are accessed by direct distributed feedback laser *** any feedback or control circuitries, the comb shows good coherence and stability. With around150 mW on-chip power, this approach also leads to an unprecedentedly wide tuning range of over one freespectral range (97.5 GHz). Our work provides a route to realize power-efficient, simple, and reconfigurablemicrocombs that can be seamlessly integrated with a wide range of photonic systems.

Evolutionary Competitive Multiobjective Multitasking: One-Pass Optimization of Heterogeneous Pareto Solutions

Competitive multiobjective multitask optimization (CMO-MTO) problems involve multiple tasks with comparable objectives but heterogeneous decision variables. The final Pareto front in CMO-MTO consists of multiple subsets corresponding to different tasks. Since the Pareto front subset of one task may be dominated by that of another, competition arises among tasks. Additionally, there may be exploitable similarities among tasks that evolutionary multitasking methods can leverage. For a comprehensive study of CMO-MTO, we construct 12 benchmark CMO-MTO problems with varied competitive relationships and inter-task similarities. To effectively solve CMO-MTO problems, we propose a reference vector contribution-based multitask evolutionary algorithm (RVC-MTEA). RVC-MTEA facilitates both global and local knowledge transfer based on vector contributions and integrates global archives to gather non-dominated solutions across multiple competitive tasks. Comparative results with four popular single-task and six state-of-the-art multitask evolutionary algorithms demonstrate the efficacy of RVC-MTEA. Finally, we apply RVC-MTEA to several real-world applications, showcasing the potential of CMO-MTO in practical decision-making scenarios. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a design, fabrication, and characterization of a reconfigurable filter for use at 25 – 50 GHz. This prototype bandpass filter (BPF) incorporates two poles, and has two bands. In band insertion losses (IL) are simulated as 1.0 and 1.2 dB respectively, and the measured losses are 4.0 dB and 2.5 dB. There is a canonical 12 dB per octave IL roll-off from the pass band. This novel filter uses vanadium dioxide, a phase change material, to vary the length of its coupled transmission lines (TLs). The prototype filter is partially fabricated, and measurements are presented.

In the era of the sixth generation (6G) and industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), an industrial cyber-physical system (ICPS) drives the proliferation of sensor devices and computing-intensive tasks. To address the limited resources of IIoT sensor devices, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) has emerged as a promising solution, providing flexible and cost-effective services in close proximity of IIoT sensor devices (ISDs). However, leveraging aerial MEC to meet the delay-sensitive and computation-intensive requirements of the ISDs could face several challenges, including the limited communication, computation and caching (3C) resources, stringent offloading requirements for 3C services, and constrained on-board energy of UAVs. To address these issues, we first present a collaborative aerial MEC-assisted ICPS architecture by incorporating the computing capabilities of the macro base station (MBS) and UAVs. We then formulate a service delay minimization optimization problem (SDMOP). Since the SDMOP is proved to be an NP-hard problem, we propose a joint computation offloading, caching, communication resource allocation, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control approach (JC5A). Specifically, JC5A consists of a block successive upper bound minimization method of multipliers (BSUMM) for computation offloading and service caching, a convex optimization-based method for communication and computation resource allocation, and a successive convex approximation (SCA)-based method for UAV trajectory control. Moreover, we theoretically prove the convergence and polynomial complexity of JC5A. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach can achieve superior system performance compared to the benchmark approaches and algorithms. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. This paper focuses on the challenge of jointly optimizing location and path loss exponent (PLE) in distance-dependent noise. Departing from the conventional independent noise model used in localization and path loss exponent estimation problems, we consider a more realistic model incorporating distance-dependent noise variance, as revealed in recent theoretical analyses and experimental results. The distance-dependent noise introduces a complex noise model with unknown noise power and PLE, resulting in an exceptionally challenging non-convex and nonlinear optimization problem. In this study, we address a joint localization and path loss exponent estimation problem encompassing distance-dependent noise, unknown parameters, and uncertainties in sensor node locations. To surmount the intractable nonlinear and non-convex objective function inherent in the problem, we introduce a variational Bayesian learning-based framework that enables the joint optimization of localization, path loss exponent, and reference noise parameters by leveraging an effective approximation to the true posterior distribution. Furthermore, the proposed joint learning algorithm provides an iterative closed-form solution and exhibits superior performance in terms of computational complexity compared to existing algorithms. computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm approaches the performance of the Bayesian Cramer-Rao bound (BCRB), achieves localization performance comparable to the (maximum likelihood-Gaussian message passing) ML-GMP algorithm in some cases, and outperforms the other comparison algorithm in all cases.
