In this paper, we consider the optimization of federated learning (FL) over a realistic wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with digital modulation and over-the-air computation (AirComp). In such a system, MIMO devices transmit their locally trained FL models to a parameter server (PS) using beamforming to maximize the number of devices scheduled for transmission. AirComp enables efficient wireless model aggregation by the PS in bandwidth-limited settings. However, wireless channel fading can produce distortions in AirComp-based FL. To tackle this challenge, we develop a novel aggregation scheme that combines digital modulation with AirComp to mitigate wireless fading while ensuring communication efficiency. We formulate this as a joint transmit-receive beamforming design optimization problem which dynamically adjusts the beamforming matrices to minimize the FL training loss with transmission errors. To solve this problem based on limited information at the PS, we employ an artificial neural network (ANN) to estimate the local FL models of all devices. Then, we derive a closed-form optimal design of the transmit and receive beamforming matrices based on predicted FL models. Numerical evaluations validate the advantages of the proposed methodology in terms of model training performance compared with baselines.

Over the past few years, there has been a noticeable transition from centralized Industrial Control systems (ICS) to distributed systems. However, the challenges of distributed systems (e.g., communication delays and packet loss) can give rise to undesired situations like deadlocks, which malicious actors may target. To address such conditions, implementing run-time security monitoring can ensure these systems’ reliable and secure operation. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for run-time security monitoring for distributed ICS, extending previous works that focus on autonomous and centralized systems. Our approach makes it possible to specify physical and cyber resources and their changing limitations within a distributed environment. By doing so, our approach offers a valuable contribution to ICS security by tackling limitations introduced by distributed ICS. Furthermore, it provides an efficient mechanism for monitoring the security of these systems in real time.

Unsupervised Recognition of Unknown Objects for Open-World Object Detection

Open-World Object Detection (OWOD) extends object detection problem to a realistic and dynamic scenario, where a detection model is required to be capable of detecting both known and unknown objects and incrementally learning newly introduced knowledge. Current OWOD models, such as ORE and OW-DETR, focus on pseudo-labeling regions with high objectness scores as unknowns, whose performance relies heavily on the supervision of known objects. While they can detect the unknowns that exhibit similar features to the known objects, they suffer from a severe label bias problem that they tend to detect all regions (including unknown object regions) that are dissimilar to the known objects as part of the background. To eliminate the label bias, this paper proposes a novel approach that learns an unsupervised discriminative model to recognize true unknown objects from raw pseudo labels generated by unsupervised region proposal methods. The resulting model can be further refined by a classification-free self-training method which iteratively extends pseudo unknown objects to the unlabeled regions. Experimental results show that our method 1) significantly outperforms the prior SOTA in detecting unknown objects while maintaining competitive performance of detecting known object classes on the MS COCO dataset, and 2) achieves better generalization ability on the LVIS and Objects365 datasets. Variational Bayesian Learning Based Localization and Channel Reconstruction in RIS-aided systems

The emerging immersive and autonomous services have posed stringent requirements on both communications and localization. By considering the great potential of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), this paper focuses on the joint channel estimation and localization for RIS-aided wireless systems. As opposed to existing works that treat channel estimation and localization independently, this paper exploits the intrinsic coupling and nonlinear relationships between the channel parameters and user location for enhancement of both localization and channel reconstruction. By noticing the non-convex, nonlinear objective function and the sparser angle pattern, a variational Bayesian learning-based framework is developed to jointly estimate the channel parameters and user location through leveraging an effective approximation of the posterior distribution. The proposed framework is capable of unifying near-field and far-field scenarios owing to exploitation of sparsity of the angular domain. Since the joint channel and location estimation problem has a closed-form solution in each iteration, our proposed iterative algorithm performs better than the conventional particle swarm optimization (PSO) and maximum likelihood (ML) based ones in terms of computational complexity. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithm almost reaches the Bayesian Cramer-Rao bound (BCRB) and achieves a superior estimation accuracy by comparing to the PSO and the ML algorithms. To ensure the security of image information and facilitate efficient management in the cloud, the utilization of reversible data hiding in encrypted images (RDHEI) has emerged as pivotal. However, most existing RDHEI schemes suffer from lower security and limited embedding capacity. To tackle these challenges, we propose a reversible data hiding with secret encrypted image sharing and adaptive coding scheme. Specifically, in the encryption phase, we introduce an improved secret sharing (SS) encryption method based on the chinese remainder theorem for polynomials (CRTP). This method not only improves the security of encrypted images but also vacates a larger room for embedding. In the embedding phase, we introduce an adaptive coding embedding approach using XOR preservation (XORP) and huffman coding, which provides high embedding capacity. Experimental results and security analysis demonstrate that our proposed encryption method achieves optimal values in security indicators for encrypted images, such as information entropy, histograms, NPCR and UACI. The proposed embedding method is superior to some state-of-the-art schemes in terms of embedding capacity. Furthermore, in datasets BOSSBase and BOWS2, the average embedding rates of the proposed embedding approach can reach 2.1745 bpp and 2.0656 bpp, respectively. © 2025 IEEE.

Nowadays, boosting the implementation of energy efficiency measures in buildings and subsequently, mainstreaming energy efficiency financing is of paramount importance for the European Union towards achieving its goal of carbon-neutrality by 2050. Unfortunately, statistics have shown that a lot of effort is needed to achieve the Europe’s targets, since energy efficiency is not yet considered as an attractive investment by the financial sector. The lack of expertise and knowledge, as well as the different perspective of project developers and financing institutions are some indicative challenges that have to be overcome. Specific to energy efficiency in buildings this is reflected by the current insufficient trends observed in the renovation rates of buildings, which reveal the urgent need for action since this is the largest consumer of energy in Europe. Furthermore, a combination of public and private funding through innovative financing instruments is required to overcome current barriers that prevent mobilization of necessary investments. The aim of this paper is to set up a role-based methodological approach for the deployment of an integrated matchmaking mechanism on an ICT platform to boost energy efficiency investments in an easy-access and trust-worthy way. The methodology envisages to follow a multidisciplinary perspective which takes into account the interactions between various key factors, such as stakeholders and barriers, so as to facilitate the complex set of decision-making actions for building renovation. The core of concept centres around the definition of the roles of the potential users of a big data for buildings platform, their interdependency and requirements with the ultimate purpose of accelerating renovation rates. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Perceptual quality assessment has always been challenging due to the difficulty in modeling the no-linear human visual system. With the diversity in the contents of multimedia signals, the conventional methods for traditional media seems no longer satisfying. One of these emerging media, is the screen content images/videos (SCINs), Containing texts and computer generated graphics, SCVs cannot be sufficiently expressed with features designed for natural sceneries. Therefore, new researches tried to devise objective quality assessment metrics, specificly for screen contents. Recently, a dataset was proposed for quality assessment of screen content videos. Since screen contents are full of structures that spread in cardinal directions, we were motivated to employ the horizontal and vertical subbands of the wavelet transform to characterize these types of visual contents. The features were incorporated in a full-reference method that showed promising results on the publicly available dataset for SCV quality assessment. Simple Image-level Classification Improves Open-vocabulary Object Detection

Open-Vocabulary Object Detection (OVOD) aims to detect novel objects beyond a given set of base categories on which the detection model is trained. Recent OVOD methods focus on adapting the image-level pre-trained vision-language models (VLMs), such as CLIP, to a region-level object detection task via, e.g., region-level knowledge distillation, regional prompt learning, or region-text pre-training, to expand the detection vocabulary. These methods have demonstrated remarkable performance in recognizing regional visual concepts, but they are weak in exploiting the VLMs' powerful global scene understanding ability learned from the billion-scale image-level text descriptions. This limits their capability in detecting hard objects of small, blurred, or occluded appearance from novel/base categories, whose detection heavily relies on contextual information. To address this, we propose a novel approach, namely Simple Image-level Classification for Context-Aware Detection Scoring (SIC-CADS), to leverage the superior global knowledge yielded from CLIP for complementing the current OVOD models from a global perspective. The core of SIC-CADS is a multi-modal multi-label recognition (MLR) module that learns the object co-occurrence-based contextual information from CLIP to recognize all possible object categories in the scene. These image-level MLR scores can then be utilized to refine the instance-level detection scores of the current OVOD models in detecting those hard objects. This is verified by extensive empirical results on two popular benchmarks, OV-LVIS and OV-COCO, which show that SIC-CADS achieves significant and consistent improvement when combined with different types of OVOD models. The Internet of Things (IoT) plays a significant role in shaping different aspects of our lives. IoT devices have become increasingly important due to their ability to connect, collect, and analyze data, automate processes, improve safety and efficiency, and deliver personalized experiences. However, the advancement in quantum computer development poses a significant threat to resource-constrained IoT devices. This new generation of computers can break the classic public-key cryptographic schemes and digital signatures implemented in these IoT devices. While protecting IoT devices from quantum computer attacks poses many challenges, researchers are continuously making significant progress in developing lightweight post-quantum cryptographic algorithms for efficient key exchange mechanisms and digital signature algorithms tailored to IoT devices to overcome this issue. This paper proposes Q-SECURE, a post-Quantum resistant Security Enhancing Cryptography for Unified Resource-constrained device Encryption. A novel scheme that enables any IoT system to leverage the assistance of other devices in the network to gain the capability to generate any proposed post-quantum cryptographic key of a given size using distributed and parallel computing.

The government of Bangladesh has implemented the “Stay Home” policy following the WHO recommendation to resist the community transmission of Covid-19. As a result, the routine activities of all government, semi-government establishments, including educational institutions, are severely affected, and the country's economic growth becomes slowed down. To overcome such a situation, the relevant authorities have introduced the “Work from Home” policy for the employees and “Remote Education” for students. However, due to the persistence of multi-dimensional socio-economic problems, many employees and students face big challenges in performing their regular jobs while adopting such a policy. Consequently, enormous psychological anxiety has been developed for all people, including students, parents, employees, etc., and concurrently created severe changes in their behavior. This study aims to analyze the reasons for the behavioral changes of the employees, students, academic staff, and family members of different ages due to psychological anxiety, stress, or physical issues. A comprehensive online-based survey has been carried out on people working in various sectors in Bangladesh. A modified Apriori Algorithm has been used to sort out the associations between the causes and types of behavioral changes. Analyzed data revealed a massive human behavioral change in most participants. This finding indicates that the negligence of those significant human behavioral changes may cause a higher risk of creating psychological imbalance. Therefore, there is a need to have a solid understanding of the reasons for the behavioral changes and set up standard guidelines to maintain “Work from Home” in this Covid-19 situation to avoid psychological imbalance. Based on this study, some suggestions have been given for implementation by the government on an urgent basis. © 2023
