This paper presents a Spatial Re-parameterization (SpRe) method for the N:M sparsity. SpRe stems from an observation regarding the restricted variety in spatial sparsity presented in N:M sparsity compared with unstructured sparsity. Particularly, N:M sparsity exhibits a fixed sparsity rate within the spatial domains due to its distinctive pattern that mandates N non-zero components among M successive weights in the input channel dimension of convolution filters. On the contrary, we observe that conventional unstructured sparsity displays a substantial divergence in sparsity across the spatial domains, which we experimentally verify to be very crucial for its robust performance retention compared with N:M sparsity. Therefore, SpRe employs the spatial-sparsity distribution of unstructured sparsity by assigning an extra branch in conjunction with the original N:M branch at training time, which allows the N:M sparse network to sustain a similar distribution of spatial sparsity with unstructured sparsity. During inference, the extra branch can be further re-parameterized into the main N:M branch, without exerting any distortion on the sparse pattern or additional computation costs. SpRe has achieved a commendable feat by matching the performance of N:M sparsity methods with state-of-the-art unstructured sparsity methods across various benchmarks. The future sixth-generation (6G) of wireless networks is expected to surpass its predecessors by offering ubiquitous coverage through integrated air-ground facility deployments in both communication and computing domains. In this network, aerial facilities, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), conduct artificial intelligence (AI) computations based on multi-modal data to support diverse applications including surveillance and environment construction. However, these multi-domain inference and content generation tasks require large AI models, demanding powerful computing capabilities and finely tuned inference models trained on rich datasets, thus posing significant challenges for UAVs. To tackle this problem, we propose an integrated air-ground edge-cloud model evolution framework, where UAVs serve as edge nodes for data collection and small model computation. Through wireless channels, UAVs collaborate with ground cloud servers, providing large model computation and model updating for edge UAVs. With limited wireless communication bandwidth, the proposed framework faces the challenge of information exchange scheduling between the edge UAVs and the cloud server. To tackle this, we present joint task allocation, transmission resource allocation, transmission data quantization design, and edge model update design to enhance the inference accuracy of the integrated air-ground edge-cloud model evolution framework by mean average precision (mAP) maximization. A closed-form lower bound on the mAP of the proposed framework is derived based on the mAP of the edge model and mAP of the cloud model, and the solution to the mAP maximization problem is optimized accordingly. Simulations, based on results from vision-based classification experiments, consistently demonstrate that the mAP of the proposed integrated air-ground edge-cloud model evolution framework outperforms both a centralized cloud model framework and a distributed edge model framework across various communica

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) envisages a sustainable, safe, convenient, and affordable air transport system. In socio-technical transition of AAM, there are a number of trade-offs in ecosystem that need to be studied. Three perspectives on economic feasibility are explored: first, based on history of VTOL services and value of time estimates, we discuss whether AAM can provide customers with competitive mobility services; second, what are the stakeholders’ insights on the deployment of AAM; last, the experience in the development of autonomous driving technology, such as parallel intelligence, can inform future AAM research.

Photovoltaic (PV) modules and solar plants are one of the main drivers towards zero-carbon future. Energy communities that are engaging citizens through collective energy actions can reinforce positive social norms and support the energy transition. Furthermore, by incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, innovative applications can be developed with huge potential, such as supply and demand management, energy efficiency actions, grid operations and maintenance actions. In this context, the scope of this paper is to present an approach for forecasting an energy cooperative's solar plant short term production by using its infrastructure and monitoring system. More specifically, four Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms are proposed and trained in an operational solar plant producing high accuracy short-term forecasts up to 6 hours. The results can be used for scheduling supply of the energy communities and set the base for more complex applications that require accurate short-term predictions, such as predictive maintenance. © 2021 IEEE.

Neural Multi-Objective Combinatorial Optimization with Diversity Enhancement

Most of existing neural methods for multi-objective combinatorial optimization (MOCO) problems solely rely on decomposition, which often leads to repetitive solutions for the respective subproblems, thus a limited Pareto set. Beyond decomposition, we propose a novel neural heuristic with diversity enhancement (NHDE) to produce more Pareto solutions from two perspectives. On the one hand, to hinder duplicated solutions for different subproblems, we propose an indicator-enhanced deep reinforcement learning method to guide the model, and design a heterogeneous graph attention mechanism to capture the relations between the instance graph and the Pareto front graph. On the other hand, to excavate more solutions in the neighborhood of each subproblem, we present a multiple Pareto optima strategy to sample and preserve desirable solutions. Experimental results on classic MOCO problems show that our NHDE is able to generate a Pareto front with higher diversity, thereby achieving superior overall performance. Speech enhancement plays an essential role in various applications, and the integration of visual information has been demonstrated to bring substantial advantages. However, the majority of current research concentrates on the examination of facial and lip movements, which can be compromised or entirely inaccessible in scenarios where occlusions occur or when the camera view is distant. Whereas contextual visual cues from the surrounding environment have been overlooked: for example, when we see a dog bark, our brain has the innate ability to discern and filter out the barking noise. To this end, in this paper, we introduce a novel task, i.e. Scene-aware Audio-Visual Speech Enhancement SAV-SE. To our best knowledge, this is the first proposal to use rich contextual information from synchronized video as auxiliary cues to indicate the type of noise, which eventually improves the speech enhancement performance. Specifically, we propose the VC-S $^{2}$ E method, which incorporates the Conformer and Mamba modules for their complementary strengths. Extensive experiments are conducted on public MUSIC, AVSpeech and AudioSet datasets, where the results demonstrate the superiority of VC-S $^{2}$ E over other competitive methods. The rapid advancement in mobile broadband technology has evolved wireless infrastructure influencing internet-of-things (IoTs). This evolution has made mobile IoTs (mIoTs) as centre of attention due to its potential of providing seamless connectivity to enable intelligent transportation systems with huge data demands of vehicular users. To address the ever-escalating data demands of vehicular mobile users, vehicular edge computing (VEC) and moving small cells (mSCs) play a pivotal role. mSCs together with VEC are capable to provide improved service quality for mIoTs. However, incorporating the mSCs in vehicles for mIoTs presents challenges while assigning the resources in mIoT-mSC network. This is due to the existence of time varying interference among mSCs. This work explores the distributed resource assignment mechanism for RSU assisted mIoT-mSC network formed in vehicular environment. In the proposed work, location prediction of city buses deployed with mSCs is done using federated learning (FL) which is subsequently utilized for efficient assignment of resources in mIoT-mSC network. Numerical results are provided to validate the proposed resource assignment mechanism.

In this paper, we consider the design of an energy efficient collaborative federated learning (CFL) methodology where devices exchange their local FL parameters with a subset of their neighbors without reliance on a parameter server. In the considered model, mobile devices implement the designed CFL to train their local FL models using their own datasets over a realistic wireless network. Due to the limited wireless resources and user movements, each device may not be able to transmit its FL parameters with all neighboring devices. Therefore, each device must select a subset of devices to share its FL parameters and optimize the transmit power. This problem is formulated as an optimization problem, whose goal is to minimize CFL training energy consumption while satisfying the delay and CFL training loss requirements. To solve this problem, a two-stage solution is proposed. At the first stage, a graph neural network (GNN) based algorithm is proposed, which enables each device to individually determine the subset of devices to transmit FL parameters using its neighboring devices' location and connection information. Compared to standard iterative algorithms that need to iteratively optimize device connections and transmit power, the proposed GNN based method can directly obtain the optimal device connections without iterative optimization. Given the optimal device connections, at the second stage, each device can directly obtain the optimal transmit power. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can decrease energy consumption by up to 46% compared to the algorithm where each device will directly connect to its first and second nearest neighbors.

Fixed-time Adaptive Neural Control for Physical Human-Robot Collaboration with Time-Varying Workspace Constraints

Physical human-robot collaboration (pHRC) requires both compliance and safety guarantees since robots coordinate with human actions in a shared workspace. This paper presents a novel fixed-time adaptive neural control methodology for handling time-varying workspace constraints that occur in physical human-robot collaboration while also guaranteeing compliance during intended force interactions. The proposed methodology combines the benefits of compliance control, time-varying integral barrier Lyapunov function (TVIBLF) and fixed-time techniques, which not only achieve compliance during physical contact with human operators but also guarantee time-varying workspace constraints and fast tracking error convergence without any restriction on the initial conditions. Furthermore, a neural adaptive control law is designed to compensate for the unknown dynamics and disturbances of the robot manipulator such that the proposed control framework is overall fixed-time converged and capable of online learning without any prior knowledge of robot dynamics and disturbances. The proposed approach is finally validated on a simulated two-link robot manipulator. Simulation results show that the proposed controller is superior in the sense of both tracking error and convergence time compared with the existing barrier Lyapunov functions based controllers, while simultaneously guaranteeing compliance and safety. Intent-driven orchestration enables organizations to achieve greater automation, integration, and intelligence of their compute and network resources by defining their objectives and policies in a more abstract and holistic way, while letting the orchestration system handle the coordination, optimization, and adaptation of the resources in response to changing needs and conditions. The trend for the development of intent-driven orchestration mechanisms has been growing in recent years as the deployment of distributed applications in the computing continuum has become more complex and diverse. In this manuscript we detail a novel approach for the management of distributed applications in the computing continuum. A hierarchical decision making scheme is proposed where an entity in a specific level of the hierarchy has the responsibility for the management of the overall application or a part of it, without having the control of all the management actions. The control is distributed across various entities that have to collaborate towards some joint objectives. Both compute and network resources management is considered that may be provided by the same or different infrastructure providers.
