As typical prosumers,commercial buildings equipped with electric vehicle(EV)charging piles and solar photovoltaic panels require an effective energy management ***,the conventional optimization-model-based building energy management system faces significant challenges regarding prediction and calculation in online *** address this issue,a long short-term memory(LSTM)recurrent neural network(RNN)based machine learning algorithm is proposed in this paper to schedule the charging and discharging of numerous EVs in commercial-building *** the proposed system control structure,the LSTM algorithm can be separated into offline and online *** the offline stage,the LSTM is used to map states(inputs)to decisions(outputs)based on the network *** the online stage,once the current state is input,the LSTM can quickly generate a solution without any additional prediction.A preliminary data processing rule and an additional output filtering procedure are designed to improve the decision performance of LSTM *** simulation results demonstrate that the LSTM algorithm can generate near-optimal solutions in milliseconds and significantly reduce the prediction and calculation pressures compared with the conventional optimization algorithm.

In this study, we investigate a novel "dimerized" dielectric metasurface featuring dual-mode resonances governed by symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BICs). The metasurface design offers advantages such as insensitivity to incident light polarization and exceptionally high quality factors exceeding 105 for low and moderate structural deviations from the monoatomic array. By introducing mastered perturbations in the metasurface via the Brillouin zone folding method, without reducing symmetry, we explore the behavior of symmetry-protected BIC states and their polarization-independent responses. Through numerical simulations and analysis, we demonstrate the superiority of Q factors for specific BIC-based resonances, leading to precise control over interaction behaviors and light engineering in both near and far fields. Our findings contribute to the understanding of BIC resonance interactions and offer insights into the design of high-performance sensing applications and meta-devices with enhanced functionalities. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

SSL(Semi-supervised learning) is widely used in machine learning, which leverages labeled and unlabeled data to improve model performance. SSL aims to optimize class mutual information, but noisy pseudo-labels introduce false class information due to the scarcity of labels. Therefore, these algorithms often need significant training time to refine pseudo-labels for performance improvement iteratively. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel plug-and-play method named ASCL(Accelerating Semi-Supervised Learning via Contrastive Learning). This method combines contrastive learning with uncertainty-based selection for performance improvement and accelerates the convergence of SSL algorithms. Contrastive learning initially emphasizes the mutual information between samples as a means to decrease dependence on pseudo-labels. Subsequently, it gradually turns to maximizing the mutual information between classes, aligning with the objective of semi-supervised learning. Uncertainty-based selection provides a robust mechanism for acquiring pseudo-labels. The combination of the contrastive learning module and the uncertainty-based selection module forms a virtuous cycle to improve the performance of the proposed model. Extensive experiments demonstrate that ASCL outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of both convergence efficiency and performance. In the experimental scenario where only one label is assigned per class in the CIFAR-10 dataset, the application of ASCL to Pseudo-label, UDA (Unsupervised Data Augmentation for Consistency Training), and Fixmatch benefits substantial improvements in classification accuracy. Specifically, the results demonstrate notable improvements in respect of 16.32%, 6.9%, and 24.43% when compared to the original outcomes. Electrophysiological recording is a widely used method to investigate cardiovascular pathology,pharmacology and developmental *** arrays record the electrical potential of cells in a minimally invasive and highthroughput ***,commonly used microelectrode arays primarily employ planar microelectrodes and cannot work in applications that require a recording of the intracellular action potential of a single *** this study,we proposed a novel measuring method that is able to record the intracellular action potential of a single cardiomyocyte by using a nanowell patterned microelectrode array(NWMEA).The NWMEA consists of five nanoscale wells at the center of each circular planar *** pulse electroporation was applied to the NWMEA to penetrate the cardiomyocyte membrane,and the intracellular action potential was continuously *** intracellular potential recording of cardiomyocytes by the NWMEA measured a potential signal with a higher quality(213.76±25.85%),reduced noise root-mean-square(~33%),and higher signal-to-noise ratio(254.36±12.61%)when compared to those of the extracellular *** to previously reported nanopillar microelectrodes,the NWMEA could ensure single cell electroporation and acquire high-quality action potential of cardiomyocytes with reduced fabrication *** NWMEA-based biosensing system is a promising tool to record the intracellular action potential of a single cell to broaden the usage of microelectrode arrays in electrophysiological investigation.

This scientific paper discusses the importance of thermal comfort control in buildings for providing high-quality working and living environments. The paper proposes a machine learning-based approach for assessing thermal comfort, which incorporates feedback from building occupants and installed temperature sensors. The approach aims to provide a more accurate estimation of thermal sensation and facilitate energy management for building managers through the provision of precise predictions of thermal comfort, thereby supporting effective HVAC control actions. The approach is characterized by its reliance on external and internal temperatures of the building, as well as human responses to a plain thermal comfort questionnaire, to evaluate the thermal comfort of the occupants in different spaces. The paper describes a methodological approach to enhance the accuracy of thermal comfort evaluation in an iterative fashion without causing discomfort to occupants. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was demonstrated through its validation and testing at the ASM Headquarters. Neural networks were initially utilized to forecast the hour-ahead internal temperatures of the different offices and the external temperature of the building. Afterwards, classification models were deployed to predict the thermal sensation of the occupants providing a useful input for an HVAC controller or for controlling natural ventilation in the building in order to maintain the occupants’ environment comfortable.

NOMANet: A Graph Neural Network Enabled Power Allocation Scheme for NOMA

This paper proposes a graph neural network (GNN) enabled power allocation scheme for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. In particular, a downlink scenario with one base station serving multiple users over several subchannels is considered, where the number of subchannels is less than the number of users, and thus, some users have to share a subchannel via NOMA. Our goal is to maximize the system energy efficiency subject to the rate requirement of each user and the overall budget. We propose a deep learning based approach termed NOMA net (NOMANet) to address the considered problem. Particularly, NOMANet is GNN-based, which maps channel state information to the desired power allocation scheme for all subchannels. The multi-head attention and the residual/dense connection are adopted to enhance the feature extraction. The output of NOMANet is guaranteed to be feasible via the customized activation function and the penalty method. Numerical results show that NOMANet trained unsupervised achieves performance close to that of the successive convex approximation method but with a faster inference speed by about 700 times. A General Framework for Clustering and Distribution Matching with Bandit Feedback

We develop a general framework for clustering and distribution matching problems with bandit feedback. We consider a K-armed bandit model where some subset of K arms is partitioned into M groups. Within each group, the random variable associated to each arm follows the same distribution on a finite alphabet. At each time step, the decision maker pulls an arm and observes its outcome from the random variable associated to that arm. Subsequent arm pulls depend on the history of arm pulls and their outcomes. The decision maker has no knowledge of the distributions of the arms or the underlying partitions. The task is to devise an online algorithm to learn the underlying partition of arms with the least number of arm pulls on average and with an error probability not exceeding a pre-determined value δ. Several existing problems fall under our general framework, including finding M pairs of arms, odd arm identification, and N-ary clustering of K arms belong to our general framework. We derive a non-asymptotic lower bound on the average number of arm pulls for any online algorithm with an error probability not exceeding δ. Furthermore, we develop a computationally-efficient online algorithm based on the Track-and-Stop method and Frank–Wolfe algorithm, and show that the average number of arm pulls of our algorithm asymptotically matches that of the lower bound. Efficient Training Approaches for Performance Anomaly Detection Models in Edge computing Environments

Microservice architectures are increasingly used to modularize IoT applications and deploy them in distributed and heterogeneous edge computing environments. Over time, these microservice-based IoT applications are susceptible to performance anomalies caused by resource hogging (e.g., CPU or memory), resource contention, etc., which can negatively impact their Quality of Service and violate their Service Level Agreements. Existing research on performance anomaly detection for edge computing environments focuses on model training approaches that either achieve high accuracy at the expense of a time-consuming and resource-intensive training process or prioritize training efficiency at the cost of lower accuracy. To address this gap, while considering the resource constraints and the large number of devices in modern edge platforms, we propose two clustering-based model training approaches: (1) intra-cluster parameter transfer learning-based model training (ICPTL) and (2) cluster-level model training (CM). These approaches aim to find a trade-off between the training efficiency of anomaly detection models and their accuracy. We compared the models trained under ICPTL and CM to models trained for specific devices (most accurate, least efficient) and a single general model trained for all devices (least accurate, most efficient). Our findings show that ICPTL's model accuracy is comparable to that of the model per device approach while requiring only 40% of the training time. In addition, CM further improves training efficiency by requiring 23% less training time and reducing the number of trained models by approximately 66% compared to ICPTL, yet achieving a higher accuracy than a single general model.
