One of the main challenges of today's societies is the avoidance of the climate change since the climate crisis in now more evident than ever. Buildings have a large share of total energy consumption and, thus, it is obvious that actions should be taken to reduce their needs. Taking into consideration that nowadays data related to building's metrics are available in significantly higher rate than in the past, due to the advance of the related technologies, it is necessary to find ways to exploit them in order to draw useful inferences regarding their consumptions and how they can be reduced. For that reason, in this paper we present a Visualisation Engine, which offers a variety of visualisations over stored data. With the usage of the proposed Visualisation Engine, we envision to be able to conduct sufficient research over the data, to generate insightful information regarding their behaviour, and to assist the development of useful solutions towards the direction of more energy efficient buildings. © 2022 IEEE.

During the Buildings' lifecycle, massive amounts of data, that contain information related to their energy consumption, are generated. Towards the creation of smart building networks, this produced information must be intercepted and harmonized according to building ontologies and schemas. The pattern recognition from building metadata is based on inferencing and intelligent querying, that can be achieved with the utilization of graph and property databases that deploy and host building information. This paper presents a Reasoning Engine Architecture implemented in the context of the H2020 project called MATRYCS that persists building semantic information. It will be leveraged to support real life applications by improving the inference operations. © 2022 IEEE.

Energy transition refers to the transition of the global energy sector towards renewable energy sources and energy efficiency, replacing fossil-based energy production and consumption systems (oil, gas and coal). The four main pillars towards this energy transition, also known as 4 Ds, will be presented as follows: Decarbonization, Decentralization, Digitization and Democratization. These dimensions are combined to change the nature of the way energy is produced, purchased and sold. In this context, consumer-centric big data application services and applications are being developed and will be discussed, based on the large amount of information available and the combination of the evolution of artificial intelligence and 'big' data management technologies. Emphasis will be given to the optimal processing and use of data with the help of innovative techniques towards intelligent energy services. Such services can enable consumers to adopt energy-efficient practices, their transition to prosumers and the promotion of energy autonomy concepts, through the creation of resilient and energy-efficient communities, bringing multiple benefits to households and industry. © 2022 IEEE.

Tackling climate change is of the utmost importance in governments' agendas. The abundance of climate related data becoming available, being published by local authorities and other sources, the digitisation of government systems under the open governance principles, and innovative data-driven services, make available resourceful and previously unseen applications that can greatly support decision-making processes. In this paper, a web-based service, to support local governments in their Sustainable Energy Climate Action Plans (SECAPs) implementation, is presented. The service incorporates open data, published from over 200 local governments, under a unified system. Data driven analytics services to classify them, compare them and recommend optimal policy actions to improve their climate change adaptation and mitigation actions are incorporated in a user-friendly application. The service aims to provide unique and tailor-made insights to local governments, monitor and follow up on their SECAPs implementation, and support their decision making processes as part of activities to tackle climate change effects they are facing. © 2023 IEEE.

Standard population projections show that virtually all global growth will be in urban areas over the next thirty years. At the same time, the last decades of constant economic and population growth, the modern lifestyle of developed countries and the creation of new needs have led to an increase in energy use per capita and at an overall level resulting in environmental pollution and strengthening of the greenhouse effect. It is essential, therefore, not only at a county level but also at a city level to boost investments in green energy projects. However, important barriers hinder local authorities from investing in this kind of projects. Among others, these barriers include the lack of internal capacity to identify and implement innovative financing schemes, high cost of financing or lack of private financing. This paper presents a software tool for assessing cities’ readiness to receive the necessary financial assistance in order to implement green energy projects. The cities’ performance is evaluated along three axes (i) Investment Attractiveness, (ii) Utilisation of Financial Resources and (iii) Project Implementation, while the methodology is based on multicriteria analysis. A pilot application in ten European cities has been conducted, and fruitful outcomes have been derived from the comparative analysis. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper studies the formation of final opinions for the Friedkin-Johnsen (FJ) model with a community of partially stubborn agents. The underlying network of the FJ model is symmetric and generated from a random graph model, in which each link is added independently from a Bernoulli distribution. It is shown that the final opinions of the FJ model will concentrate around those of an FJ model over the expected graph as the network size grows, on the condition that the stubborn agents are well connected to other agents. Probability bounds are proposed for the distance between these two final opinion vectors, respectively for the cases where there exist non-stubborn agents or not. Numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the theoretical findings. The simulation shows that, in presence of non-stubborn agents, the link probability between the stubborn and the non-stubborn communities affect the distance between the two final opinion vectors significantly. Additionally, if all agents are stubborn, the opinion distance decreases with the agent stubbornness. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper investigates the interaction of non-expert stakeholders with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the energy urban domain, using the VIRTSI model and focusing on the capabilities of ChatGPT. VIRTSI (Variability and Impact of Reciprocal Trust States towards Intelligent systems), is a rigorous computational model for human-AI Interaction that simulates human trust states, spanning from overtrust to distrust, through user modelling and quantifies the efficiency of the interaction in VIRTSI-adapted confusion matrices. The research employed an 16-question survey, evaluating the accuracy and usefulness of ChatGPT's responses regarding energy consumption, cost-effective solutions, and renewable energy production for residential buildings in Greece. Each answer was assessed by human stakeholders who were non-expert in the energy Urban Domain (e.g house owners, building managers, etc.), who either accepted or rejected the responses based on validation processes. The analysis highlighted key aspects such as repetition, specification, and objections in the interaction with ChatGPT, offering insights into the effectiveness of AI in supporting energy-related decisions. The findings reveal that while AI can provide valuable information, user validation and expert consultation are critical for practical implementation. This highlights both the potential and limitations of integrating AI tools like ChatGPT in enhancing non-expert stakeholder engagement and decision-making in urban energy management, emphasizing the ongoing need for human expert involvement. © 2024 IEEE.

Nowadays it becomes evident that there is a lack of Information Technology systems that decision making as the creation of financing schemes for the building sector. In this context an information system acting as a marketplace enables data driven components that will be exploited by end users to perform bids and offers for building investments. This work focuses on the functional description of the EU-funded project ENERGATE marketplace for energy efficiency investments. ENERGATE System Architecture fosters data sharing, interoperability and the integration of data driven techniques, underlying the design principles to be followed having alignment with existing EU standards and protocols. © 2023 IEEE.

Extreme heat has become a common phenomenon especially the summer months. Dense urban environments suffer greatly from extreme heat events, which makes the everyday life of citizens difficult. For the more vulnerable population, such as the elderly, extreme heat waves can become dangerous for their health and even lethal. The study employs a Future Heat Risk Index to evaluate potential heat-related vulnerabilities under different climate change scenarios, particularly Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 for the year 2040. Through the integration of climate change projections and spatial analysis, the research identifies areas at high risk of heat-related impacts and prioritizes mitigation strategies. Key findings underscore the importance of proactive planning and adaptation measures in enhancing resilience to extreme heat events, particularly in Mediterranean cities like those in Attica, Greece. The proposed mitigation strategies include implementation of vegetation enhancement and cold materials installation. The effects of both strategies are compared and discussed, highlighting the importance of incorporating climate change scenarios into decision-making processes to safeguard public health and well-being in a warming climate.

The increasing integration of renewable energy sources necessitates the deployment of efficient energy storage systems to ensure grid resilience, stability, and efficient operation. Selecting the optimal energy storage technology involves the evaluation across multiple criteria, reflecting technical, economic, and environmental dimensions, among others. This paper presents a decision support tool, based on an ensemble of Multi-Criteria decision-Making methods, to rank energy storage technologies. These methods are renowned for their ability to handle conflicting criteria and provide clear, actionable insights for decision-makers. A detailed case study concerning battery systems is also included, evaluating the alternatives against seven technology and economic type criteria. The results demonstrate the efficacy of the employed tool in identifying the most suitable energy storage technologies, providing valuable guidance for stakeholders in the selection and development of energy storage solutions.
