This paper studies the state observer design of a spatial two-dimensional (2-D) linear diffusion process described by a linear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) under mobile sensors. Firstly, we analyze the well-posedness of the PDE system and give the structure form of the state observer with mobile sensors. Subsequently, according to the number of mobile sensors, the 2-D space domain is divided into multiple sub-domains, and the mobile sensors are guided by the projection operator method, which can guarantee that the mobile sensors can only move in their respective 2-D sub-domains. Then, in the light of Lyapunov theory, Poincaré-Wirtinger inequality and Barbalat lemma, we propose an observation-plus-guidance design method to ensure the asymptotic stability of the state estimation error system. In the designed mobile strategy, the actual guidance of mobile sensors is essentially a physical synthesis of two direction guidance laws, where two dimensional guidance laws are designed separately. Moreover, the existence condition of the observer is given by linear matrix inequalities. At last, a numerical example is provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed design scheme. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) are extensively employed in manufacturing workshops for their high degree of automation and flexibility. This paper investigates a limited AGV scheduling problem (LAGVSP) in matrix manufacturing workshops with undirected material flow, aiming to minimize both total task delay time and total task completion time. To address this LAGVSP, a mixed-integer linear programming model is built, and a nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II based on dual population co-evolution (NSGA-IIDPC) is proposed. In NSGA-IIDPC, a single population is divided into a common population and an elite population, and they adopt different evolutionary strategies during the evolution process. The dual population co-evolution mechanism is designed to accelerate the convergence of the non-dominated solution set in the population to the Pareto front through information exchange and competition between the two populations. In addition, to enhance the quality of initial population, a minimum cost function strategy based on load balancing is adopted. Multiple local search operators based on ideal point are proposed to find a better local solution. To improve the global exploration ability of the algorithm, a dual population restart mechanism is adopted. Experimental tests and comparisons with other algorithms are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of NSGA-IIDPC in solving the LAGVSP. © 2021 TUP.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of people globally, with respiratory organs being strongly affected in individuals with comorbidities. Medical imaging-based diagnosis and prognosis have become increasingly popular in clinical settings for detecting COVID-19 lung infections. Among various medical imaging modalities, ultrasound stands out as a low-cost, mobile, and radiation-safe imaging technology. In this comprehensive review, we focus on AI-driven studies utilizing lung ultrasound (LUS) for COVID-19 detection and analysis. We provide a detailed overview of both publicly available and private LUS datasets and categorize the AI studies according to the dataset they used. Additionally, we systematically analyzed and tabulated the studies across various dimensions, including data preprocessing methods, AI models, cross-validation techniques, and evaluation metrics. In total, we reviewed 60 articles, 41 of which utilized public datasets, while the remaining employed private data. Our findings suggest that ultrasound-based AI studies for COVID-19 detection have great potential for clinical use, especially for children and pregnant women. Our review also provides a useful summary for future researchers and clinicians who may be interested in the field. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Axon: A novel systolic array architecture for improved run time and energy efficient GeMM and Conv operation with on-chip im2col

General matrix multiplication (GeMM) is a core operation in virtually all AI applications. Systolic array (SA) based architectures have shown great promise as GeMM hardware accelerators thanks to their speed and energy efficiency. Unfortunately, SAs incur a linear delay in filling the operands, due to unidirectional propogation via pipeline latches. In this work, we propose a novel in-array data orchestration technique in SAs where we enable data feeding on the principal diagonal followed by bi-directional propagation. This improves the runtime by up to 2× at minimal hardware overhead. In addition, the proposed data orchestration enables convolution lowering (known as im2col) using a simple hardware support to fully exploit input feature map reuse opportunity and significantly lower the off-chip memory traffic resulting in 1.2× throughput improvement and 2.17× inference energy reduction during YOLOv3 and RESNET50 workload on average. In contrast, conventional data orchestration would require more elaborate hardware and control signals to implement im2col in hardware because of the data skew. We have synthesized and conducted place and route for 16×16 systolic arrays based on the novel and conventional orchestrations using ASAP 7nm PDK and found that our proposed approach results in 0.211% area and 1.6% power overheads. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

We propose a biomimetic propulsion system inspired by the spinal motor control mechanisms of zebrafish, allowing the submersible to adapt its propulsion strategy in real time based on real-time feedback from the environment. The design consists of two components: a neurological model and a topological model. The topological model is derived from Navier-Stokes equations to simulate fluid dynamics, coupled with topology optimization methods to optimize the shape and surface interactions of the submersible with water. To evaluate the effectiveness of the system, we tested the system under two control conditions: open-loop configurations and closed configurations. The experimental results demonstrated that the topology and topological mod-els achieved significant improvements in energy efficiency and traversal time, compared to a control set-up. This design allows us to extend the operational range and duration of underwater vehicles, enabling more extensive and sustainable exploration of the ocean floor. This technology has far-reaching implications for ocean exploration, climate research, and underwater robotics. Moreover, the scalability of our design allows for potential applications in larger underwater vehicles as well as in multi-agent systems where multiple underwater vehicles work together. © 2025 IEEE.

Physiological Information Preserving Video Compression for rPPG

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) has recently attracted much attention due to its non-contact measurement convenience and great potential in health care and computer vision applications. Early rPPG studies were mostly developed on self-collected uncompressed video data, which limited their application in scenarios that require long-distance real-time video transmission, and also hindered the generation of large-scale publicly available benchmark datasets. In recent years, with the popularization of high-definition video and the rise of telemedicine, the pressure of storage and real-time video transmission under limited bandwidth have made the compression of rPPG video inevitable. However, video compression can adversely affect rPPG measurements. This is due to the fact that conventional video compression algorithms are not specifically proposed to preserve physiological signals. Based on this, we propose a video compression scheme specifically designed for rPPG application. The proposed approach consists of three main strategies: 1) facial ROI-based computational resource reallocation;2) rPPG signal preserving bit resource reallocation;and 3) temporal domain up- and down-sampling coding. UBFC-rPPG, ECG-Fitness, and a self-collected dataset are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can preserve almost all physiological information after compressing the original video to 1/60 of its original size. The proposed method is expected to promote the development of telemedicine and deep learning techniques relying on large-scale datasets in the field of rPPG measurement. © 2013 IEEE.

In this letter, we propose a six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA)-aided cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system to fully exploit its macro spatial diversity, where a set of distributed access points (APs), each equipped with multiple 6DMA surfaces, cooperatively serve all users in a given area. Connected to a central processing unit (CPU) via fronthaul links, 6DMA-APs can optimize their combining vectors for decoding the users' information based on either local channel state information (CSI) or global CSI shared among them. We aim to maximize the average achievable sum-rate via jointly optimizing the rotation angles of all 6DMA surfaces at all APs, based on the users' spatial distribution. Since the formulated problem is non-convex and highly non-linear, we propose a Bayesian optimization-based algorithm to solve it efficiently. Simulation results show that, by enhancing signal power and mitigating interference through reduced channel cross-correlation among users, 6DMA-APs with optimized rotations can significantly improve the average sum-rate, as compared to the conventional cell-free network with fixed-position antennas and that with only a single centralized AP with optimally rotated 6DMAs, especially when the user distribution is more spatially diverse. © 2012 IEEE.

Active Hypothesis Testing for Quantum Detection of Phase-Shift Keying Coherent States

This paper explores the quantum detection of Phase-Shift Keying (PSK)-coded coherent states through the lens of active hypothesis testing, focusing on a Dolinar-like receiver with constraints on displacement amplitude and energy. With coherent state slicing, we formulate the problem as a controlled sensing task in which observation kernels have parameters shrinking with sample size. The constrained open-loop error exponent and a corresponding upper bound on the Bayesian error probability are proven. Surprisingly, the exponent-optimal open-loop policy for binary PSK with high dark counts is not simply time-sharing. This work serves as a first step towards obtaining analytical insights through the active hypothesis testing framework for designing resource-constrained quantum communication receivers.
