Balancing supply and demand is crucial for efficient energy distribution. To achieve it, accurate short-term electrical load forecasting is essential. This study investigates the applicability of various machine learning architectures for short-term load forecasting, using an NSW load dataset from the Australian Energy Market Operator. The key finding is the superior performance of a hybrid model, which integrates LSTM and GRU layers, on the NSW load dataset. This study demonstrates hybrid neural network models can significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of energy load predictions, thereby suggesting a viable pathway for enhancing future utility management practices. © 2024 IEEE.

Quantum computers, although still in the theoretical stage, conceptually have the power to break many current cryptosystems, including public-key schemes., for example, RSA (Rivest, Shamir., Adleman), elliptic-curve cryptography (ECC), and ElGamal. NIST specialists and national governments believe that existing cryptography algorithms will become vulnerable to brute force analysis by the end of the decade and agree that measures should be taken before then to ensure the secrecy of current and future algorithms. In this context, information security, including confidentiality and integrity, must be considered. This paper provides a systematic literature review on whether existing public-key schemes have the necessary complexity and solution space to resist a quantum computer. The discussion will focus on a quantum computer's negative 'real-world' impact and examine existing post-quantum algorithms, then provide analysis across two selected dimensions. Finally, we summarise the latest trends and gaps in post-quantum cryptography and provide the security analysis of NIST's last round finalists. © 2023 IEEE.

This experimental work characterises the fluid response of isothermal water in a horizontal cylinder (Fig. 1) with a fill level of 30%. This parametric study investigates three forcing amplitudes and eleven forcing frequencies for each respective amplitude. Images captured using a high-speed camera are used to quantify global sloshing amplitudes, using the lateral motion of the centre of gravity (COG). Free surface elevations at the left and right sidewalls are also quantified. The maximum displacements obtained, for all three forcing amplitudes tested, show a softening non-linear response. In this work we refer to the maximum response as the largest sloshing amplitude recorded for each forcing amplitude (A). We show asymmetry in the steady state between the left and right sidewall run up, where the forcing amplitude (A = 2mm) and the excitation frequency ratio is near its maximum response. © 2023 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

Side lobe level reduction(SLL)of antenna arrays significantly enhances the signal-to-interference ratio and improves the quality of service(QOS)in recent and future wireless communication systems starting from 5G up to ***,it improves the array gain and directivity,increasing the detection range and angular resolution of radar *** study proposes two highly efficient SLL reduction *** techniques are based on the hybridization between either the single convolution or the double convolution algorithms and the genetic algorithm(GA)to develop the Conv/GA andDConv/GA,*** convolution process determines the element’s excitations while the GA optimizes the element *** M elements linear antenna array(LAA),the convolution of the excitation coefficients vector by itself provides a new vector of excitations of length N=(2M−1).This new vector is divided into three different sets of excitations including the odd excitations,even excitations,and middle excitations of lengths M,M−1,andM,*** the same element spacing as the original LAA is used,it is noticed that the odd and even excitations provide a much lower SLL than that of the LAA but with amuch wider half-power beamwidth(HPBW).While the middle excitations give the same HPBWas the original LAA with a relatively higher *** the increased HPBWof the odd and even excitations,the element spacing is optimized using the ***,the synthesized arrays have the same HPBW as the original LAA with a two-fold reduction in the ***,for extreme SLL reduction,the DConv/GA is *** this technique,the same procedure of the aforementioned Conv/GA technique is performed on the resultant even and odd excitation *** provides a relatively wider HPBWthan the original LAA with about quad-fold reduction in the SLL.

Smart grids have developed as a potentially game-changing strategy for controlling the demand and supply of energy. Unfortunately, peak demand is a significant source of grid instability and rising energy prices, making it one of the most critical difficulties in smart grids. During times of high energy demand on the grid, demand response (DR) strategies incentivize consumers to change how they use energy. This study’s overarching goal is to learn how DR methods may be used to help smart grids make better use of their energy resources. The primary research is to develop a smart DR system that can predict times of high energy demand and proactively alter usage to reduce such periods. Machine learning strategies are utilized in the proposed system to estimate peak demand via past data, weather predictions, and other variables. The system will then alter energy use based on real-time data from smart meters along with other sensing devices to meet the projected demand. The simulation model will include several scenarios for testing the DR system’s flexibility, including a range of weather conditions, load profiles, and grid topologies. The metaverse is a developing field that crosses several areas of multimedia research. In this paper, we introduce the 256-MetaverseRecords dataset, a novel and extensive collection of annotated screen recordings in the form of videos from various virtual worlds of the metaverse. We describe the process of creating the dataset, the quality criteria for the annotations, and the exploration of the dataset. We also show four experiments to evaluate the performance of different feature extraction methods for Metaverse Recordings (MVRs): MVR segmentation, audio event detection, and object and interaction detection based on this dataset. Our results demonstrate that existing methods have limitations and leave challenges in dealing with the diversity and complexity of metaverse data, and that more research is needed to develop metaverse-specific techniques. Our dataset can serve as a valuable resource for the research community and foster the development of new applications and solutions for the metaverse. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Multimedia Information Retrieval is the field of indexing and retrieval of multimedia content objects. The meta-verse is a collection of virtual worlds, build from multimedia. We examined the intersection of both and identified relevant use cases. In this paper, we present two use case classes which reveal challenges in the integration of MMIR and the metaverse. The first use case class addresses the use of MMIR from the metaverse, the second describes metaverse recordings as a new type of multimedia, required to be supported by MMIR. For the integration, first, we propose a generic architecture to integrate multimedia in the metaverse. Second, we describe our integration approach of the new type of metaverse multimedia into Multimedia Information Retrieval systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Self-supervised learning (SSL) is capable of learning remarkable representations from centrally available data. Recent works further implement federated learning with SSL to learn from rapidly growing decentralized unlabeled images (e.g., from cameras and phones), often resulting from privacy constraints. Extensive attention has been paid to designing new frameworks or methods that achieve better performance for the SSL-based FL. However, such an effort has not yet taken the security of SSL-based FL into consideration. We aim to explore backdoor attacks in the context of SSL-based FL via an in-depth empirical study. In this paper, we propose a novel backdoor attack BADFSS against SSL-based FL. First, BADFSS learns a backdoored encoder via supervised contrastive learning on poison datasets constructed based on local datasets. Then, BADFSS employs attention alignment to enhance the backdoor effect and maintain the consistency between backdoored and global encoders. Moreover, we perform empirical evaluations of the proposed backdoor attacks on four datasets and compared BADFSS with four existing backdoor attacks that are transferred into federated self-supervised learning. The experiments demonstrate that BADFSS outperforms baseline methods and is effective under various settings. © 2024 International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence. All rights reserved.

The increasing water pollution levels and the growing demand for clean water necessitate advanced monitoring solutions. This study aims to develop an Internet of Things (IoT)-based real-time water quality monitoring system that addresses the limitations of traditional methods, which are often time-consuming and lack continuous monitoring capabilities. The system integrates pH, temperature, and turbidity sensors with an Arduino microcontroller and NodeMCU for Wi-Fi connectivity, transmitting data to a cloud platform for real-time access and analysis. The methodology involved interfacing these sensors with the microcontroller, displaying LCD data, and providing LED alerts. The findings indicate that the prototype’s readings closely align with laboratory measurements, with minor deviations in pH and temperature values and slightly more significant differences in turbidity readings. This demonstrates the prototype’s reliability and accuracy in real-time environmental monitoring. The conclusion emphasises the system’s potential to enhance water resource management through continuous and accurate tracking, enabling timely interventions. Future recommendations include improving sensor calibration, expanding the range of monitored parameters, and integrating advanced data analytics for predictive capabilities. The system’s real-time data logging capabilities significantly enhance water management by providing timely alerts and enabling proactive responses to water quality issues. The impact of this system is substantial, offering a scalable and cost-effective solution for continuous monitoring, thus contributing to improved water resource management and public health protection. © 2025 by the authors of this article.

In this paper,we present a two-grid discretization scheme for semilinear parabolic integro-differential equations by H1-Galerkin mixed finite element *** use the lowest order Raviart-Thomas mixed finite elements and continuous linear finite element for spatial discretization,and backward Euler scheme for temporal ***,a priori error estimates and some superclose properties are ***,a two-grid scheme is presented and its convergence is *** the proposed two-grid scheme,the solution of the nonlinear system on a fine grid is reduced to the solution of the nonlinear system on a much coarser grid and the solution of two symmetric and positive definite linear algebraic equations on the fine grid and the resulting solution still maintains optimal ***,a numerical experiment is implemented to verify theoretical results of the proposed *** theoretical and numerical results show that the two-grid method achieves the same convergence property as the one-grid method with the choice h=H^(2).
