A deep learning framework for automatic assessment of presence in virtual reality using multimodal behavioral cues

Effective development of virtual reality (VR) applications is heavily reliant on the evaluation of user experience (UX). However, traditional methods such as questionnaires have inherent limitations which hinder their ability to capture nuanced behavioral responses and impede the agility of VR content creation: They are time-consuming, burdensome for users, and require significant human effort for interpretation. This study introduces an automated framework aimed at addressing the limitations of questionnaire-based evaluations to assess UX in VR. Our primary focus is to validate the concept of this framework through assessment of the sense of presence (SOP), a crucial psychological perception with significant impact on VR UX. Our proposed framework utilizes a deep neural network (DNN) to analyze patterns in multimodal behavioral cues, including facial expressions, head movements, and hand movements, to predict scores from the Igroup Presence Questionnaire (IPQ). Additionally, we introduce two statistical profiles: the Visual Entropy Profile (VEP), which offers insights into visual complexity by depicting scene entropy, and the Experiential Presence Profile (EPP), which is designed to capture users’ historical SOP levels to enable personalized baseline and sensitivity estimation. The proposed framework achieves a significant correlation between actual and predicted IPQ scores, with a Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient of 0.7303, showcasing the potential of DNNs in analyzing complex behavioral signals and automating SOP assessment. This study represents a pioneering effort in leveraging DNNs for the automatic assessment of SOP and paves the way for future advances in automatically assessing VR UX and unlocking new opportunities in the field. © The Author(s) 2025.

In mobile robot navigation, path planning of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) remains an important problem, particularly for indoor environments. Indoor environments consist of various challenges such as limited GPS signal, presence of static and dynamic obstacles, narrow passages, low flight height, stability, and maneuverability etc. Due to those issues, it is very difficult to navigate in such an environment with precise control and safe navigation. Hence, there is a need of robust and adaptable artificial intelligent path planners to address these challenges. This paper addresses the application of A∗ Algorithm and Fuzzy Logic as a hybrid approach for path planning of UAVs for indoor navigation. In a static context, the study shows the simulation and experimental validation. The results demonstrate how well the hybrid A∗ Algorithm and Fuzzy Logic work together to accomplish path planning objectives like navigational time and optimal path design. Less than $6 \%$ separates the simulated and experimental results as a percentage. Additionally, the effectiveness of the suggested hybrid technique is evaluated against standalone algorithms like A∗ and Fuzzy Logic, with the suggested hybrid approach yielding $7.5 \%$ shorter paths and less navigation time. © 2024 IEEE.

Constructing a MOEA approach for product form Kansei design based on text mining and BPNN

Kansei engineering (KE) is a product design method that aims to develop products to meet users' emotional preferences. However, traditional KE faces the problem that the acquisition of Kansei factors does not represent the real consumers demands based on manual and reports, and using traditional methods to calculate relationship between Kansei factors and specific design elements, which can lead to the omission of key information. To address these problems, this study adopts text mining and backward propagation neural networks (BPNN) to propose a product form design method from a multi-objective optimization perspective. Firstly, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) and WordNet are used to extract key user Kansei requirements from online review texts to obtain more accurate Kansei knowledge. Secondly, the BPNN is used to establish the non-linear relationship between product Kansei factors and specific design elements, and a preference mapping prediction model is constructed. Finally, BPNN is transformed into an iterative prediction value of non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II), and the model is solved through multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) to obtain the Pareto optimal solution set that satisfies the user's multiple emotional needs, and the fuzzy Delphi method is used to obtain the best product form design scheme that meets the user's multiple emotional images. Using the example of electric bicycle form design could show that this proposed method can effectively complete multi-objective product solutions innovation design. © 2024 - IOS Press. While some countries have social organizations or policies in place to assist individuals with visual impairments, they still face limitations and difficulties in living independently and finding job opportunities. This study proposes that individuals with visual impairments exhibit differences in physiological functions, behavioral habits, and cognition compared to others. Therefore, in the process of enhancing their quality of life, developers should not adhere to traditional industrial design methods. Instead, users should be actively involved in specific solutions, integrating their behavioral habits into the functionality of the product. As a result, this research introduces the concept of consensusization and explores a conceptual design for an innovative open-source control system. Blind individuals can match abstract shape modules to different appliances, doors, switches, and other everyday scenarios based on their unique life experiences and cognitive habits. They can adjust the combination of these modules, allowing them the opportunity to actively edit their lifestyle and work methods. Simultaneously, the open-source control system, through IoT systems and sensors, can create behavior path guidance and daily safety reminders within the environment. The consensus-based concept serves as a methodological model for product development, extending to more applications and scenarios with accessibility needs. © 2024 The Authors.

Training samples for deep learning networks are typically obtained through various field experiments,which require significant manpower,resource and time ***,it is possible to utilize simulated data to augment the training *** this paper,by comparing the actual experimental model with the simulated model generated by the gprMax[1]forward simulation method,the feasibility of obtaining simulated samples through gprMax simulation is ***,the samples generated by gprMax forward simulation are used for training the network to detect objects in existing real *** the same time,aiming at the detection and intelligent recognition of road sub-surface defects,the Swin-YOLOX algorithm is introduced,and the excellence of the detection network,which is improved by augmenting the simulated samples with real samples,is further *** comparing the prediction performance of the object detection models,it is observed that the model trained with mixed samples achieved a recall of 94.74%and a mean average precision(maP)of 97.71%,surpassing the model trained only on real samples by 12.95%and 15.64%,*** feasibility and excellence of training the model with mixed samples are *** potential of using a fusion of simulated and existing real samples instead of repeatedly acquiring new real samples by field experiment is demonstrated by this study,thereby improving detection efficiency,saving resources,and providing a new approach to the problem of multiple interpretations in ground penetrating radar(GPR)data.

Transplutonium isotopes are scarce and need to be produced by irradiation in high flux ***,their production is inefficient,and optimization studies are *** study analyzes the physical nature of transplutonium isotope produc-tion using ^(252)Cf,^(244)Cm,^(242)Cm,and ^(238)Pu as *** methods based on the Monte Carlo burnup calculation have the limitations of many calculations and cannot analyze the individual energy intervals in detail;thus,they cannot sup-port the refined evaluation,screening,and optimization of the irradiation *** understanding the physical nature and simplifying the complexity of the production process,we propose a rapid diagnostic method for evaluating radiation schemes based on the concepts“single energy interval value(SEIV)”and“energy spectrum total value(ESTV)”.The rapid diagnostic method not only avoids tedious burnup calculations,but also provides a direction for *** optimal irradiation schemes for producing ^(252)Cf,^(244)Cm,^(242)Cm,and ^(238)Pu are determined based on a rapid diagnostic *** irradiation schemes can significantly improve production *** with the initial scheme,the optimal scheme improved the production efficiency of ^(238)Pu by 7.41 times;^(242)Cm,11.98 times;^(244)Cm,65.20 times;and ^(252)Cf,15.08 ***,a refined analysis of transplutonium isotope production is conducted and provides a theoretical basis for improving production efficiency.

The operating comfort of biological microscopes is directly related to the operators’ health and the accuracy of observation results. In this paper, the neck and arm comfort of biological microscope operators was researched. Firstly, the evaluation experiments included two parts: one was the evaluation of operating comfort for the neck and shoulder, the other was for the arm. The surface electromyography (sEMG) data of the measured muscles such as the splenius capitis, sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, flexor carpi and brachioradialis were acquired within the range of 0–40° neck angle and 90–150° elbow angle. In addition, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) of operators was taken as the subjective evaluation results for different operating postures. Secondly, the root mean square (RMS) data of different subjects’ sEMG were normalized to the corresponding RMS of 20%MVC. It can be seen that the load of the splenius capitis, sternocleidomastoid and trapezius all increased with the increase of the head bow angle, and the load of measured muscles reached the maximum in 35–45°. And when the angle between the forearm and the upper arm was 115–125°, the load on the flexor carpi radialis, brachioradialis and trapezius was minimal. Finally, the ANOVA statistical analysis was proceeded to the RMS data of the measured muscles. It was found that the load of the splenius capitis and sternocleidomastoid was positively correlated with the bow angle, and the load range was 4%–30%MVC. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The film industry has evolved because of visual effects (VFX). Matte painting is a component of VFX and is important to VFX. Matte painting is a successful method for producing realistic visual effects and backgrounds for movies and television. To produce a scene or setting that can be utilized as a background in a movie or television show, this technique entails painting on a flat surface, such as a canvas or board. Filmmakers can depict a setting that is not actually there with the use of matte painting. The set will cost a lot of money to produce. This makes it possible to carry out actions that aren’t possible at the shooting site. This study paper’s aim is to investigate the background, methods, and applications of matte painting in the film and television industries. This essay also looks at the benefits and drawbacks of matte painting as well as its efficiency in producing realistic visual effects backdrops. A decoupled method for time-dependent reliability-based design optimization

Time-dependent reliability-based design optimization(TRBDO)has received extensive attention because of its ability to achieve optimal solutions that help meet the requirement for whole lifecycle reliability by quantitatively considering dynamic ***,directly solving TRBDO problems is computationally expensive,if not prohibitive,owing to the need to repeatedly evaluate time-dependent probabilistic *** address this challenge,an efficient decoupled method called sequential optimization and time-dependent reliability assessment(SOTRA)is proposed in this *** method transforms the original TRBDO problem,initially formulated probabilistically,into a problem using percentile formulation after discretizing time-dependent performance *** adopting the equivalent minimum performance target point(EMPTP)concept,the TRBDO problem is further converted into an equivalent deterministic optimization problem,which is subsequently solved through a sequential iteration process involving deterministic optimization and time-dependent reliability *** efficiently and robustly search an EMPTP for reliability analysis,a time-dependent self-adaptive finite-step length method is *** verify the proposed SOTRA method against existing TRBDO methods,a numerical example,a benchmark structural design case of a simply supported beam,and an engineering application for flexible wheel design are exemplified in this *** results demonstrate that the proposed SOTRA method exhibits high efficiency and robustness in solving TRBDO problems.
