As a promising low-power wide-area network communication technology, Long Range Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN) have been widely adopted by smart applications, such as smart metering, smart grids and smart cities. In these applications, massive deployed end devices demand reprogramming with the latest standards and preventing security vulnerabilities through their life cycle, which makes reprogramming a crucial issue. The existing reprogramming scheme in LoRaWAN, called LoRaWAN firmware update over-the-air (FUOTA), suffers from inefficient firmware dissemination and computation-intensive coding. Moreover, considering the topology difference and unique physical layer parameters (e.g., spreading factors) of LoRaWAN, classical reprogramming schemes in wireless sensor networks are not suitable for LoRaWAN. To address this challenge, we propose a reprogramming scheme called DAU (Divide And Upgrade) for LoRaWAN. To ensure reliability, we exploit the channel activity detection (CAD) technique to effectively detect negative acknowledgments (NACKs) from devices and use a lightweight coding scheme to reduce computing and storage overhead. Besides, devices are divided into groups using different spreading factors (SFs) to reduce network energy consumption. To further reduce the setup time of reprogramming, we leverage the beacons of LoRaWAN to quickly disseminate the meta-data of firmware to devices participating in the reprogramming. Extensive experimental results based on outdoor testbed demonstrate that DAU can significantly reduce energy consumption compared to FUOTA. © 2023 IEEE.

Evolutionary algorithms are anytime algorithms, as they can produce a viable solution at any time and, moreover, the quality of the solution improves over time. However, it may be hoped that more information can be gained when a solution is produced, even if the algorithm is stopped before the optimum has been found. For example, one might want to know which of the bit values in the current best solution are necessary for a good result, and which are still uncertain. We propose heuristics for efficiently gaining such information about bit values, in the context of the (1+1)EA. Along the way, we prove two useful general results. The first bounds the runtime for m parallel copies of a process. The second bounds the probability of having a non-optimal bit value at any given position when optimising a weakly monotonic function. Using these results, we prove bounds for the time it takes for our proposed heuristics to correctly identify bit values when the (1+1)EA runs on monotonic and hidden subset problems. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

One of the most challenging tasks in the deployment of basic ship-based VTOL Unmanned Air System (UAS) is the launch and recovery and deck handling operational performance on smaller ship platforms like Corvettes, Frigates and Destroyers. This is owing to the random nature of seaway created deck motion coupled with ship structure disturbed air wake patterns. For most of the traditional VTOL UASs, the precise measurement of these environmental data is essential for air vehicle safe launch and recovery events. Physics limits the speed by which the deck can be raised from rest to a dangerous position. The time needed to set-up and land UASs may be longer than these quiescent windows may persist, assuming a quiescent window can be identified in the first place. MoD and the university of exeter’s Quiescent Period Prediction (QPP) objective is to provide ship motion conditions and motion predictions with sufficient forecasted time (over a minute) to launch, recover and complete other motion sensitive tasks regardless of the seaway. The fundamental concept is to measure remote sea surface profiles to predict the future wave forces acting upon a vessel. The objective is to expand ship operating deck limits to approximately Sea State 6+. Based on lessons learned from the use of the QPP it is conceivable that, once integrated, shipboard communities could operate in much higher sea conditions recovering the air/sea vehicles with elevated confidence and reliability. In a related but future QPP study activity, it was observed that certain ship deck condition tendencies were apparently related. Operating over deck whilst the ship is experiencing a quiescent ship motion period normally has the secondary effect of minimized air wake confusion. This is owing to fewer ship structure excursions into and out of the air flow. To better define deck airflow around the ship it is proposed to integrate a Doppler LIDAR instrumented federate. The quasilinear diffusion theory is generalized to include the resonance broadening effect of weak turbulence on relativistic electrons in Earth's radiation belts. In contrast with quasilinear resonant diffusion, in which cases the resonant condition should be rigorously satisfied, the second-order theory demonstrates that the wave-driven scattering of relativistic electrons could be broadened into an area of velocity space adjacent to the resonant region. It is shown that a finite departure time, resulted from the second-order wave-particle interaction, is the key factor controlling the occurrence and effectiveness of such a resonance broadening. The formula to solve the departure time has been proposed. Adopting the solved departure time, the resultant model can correctly reproduce results of test particle simulations. Our result indicates the importance of resonance broadening effect in the radiation belt modeling, and in understanding the weak turbulence dynamics in a magnetized plasma system.

Launch, recovery, and deck handling operational performance on smaller ship platforms like Corvettes, Frigates and Destroyers are qualified as the most challenging tasks in the UAS ship-deployment of a VTOL Uncrewed Air System (UAS). One of the main hurdles is the random nature of seaway-created deck motions coupled with ship structure disturbed air wake patterns. The MoD has supported a range of work aimed at bringing Quiescent Period Prediction (QPP) technology to fruition. QPP firstly requires Wave Profiling RADAR to measure the sea wave system out to approximately 2km in the region around a vessel. Secondly these measurements are employed in a wave propagation model to predict the actual wave forces acting on a vessel. Using the wave predictions as inputs to a vessel model makes possible to predict the actual (deterministic as opposed to statistical) motions of a vessel. Wave systems naturally alternate groups of large waves with smaller waves, this property, combined with the predictive ability, allows to identify the quietest (most quiescent) periods in which to conduct wave limited naval operations. Naval mission planners in the Royal Navy, and elsewhere in the World, appreciate the need to maintain rapid, but safe, deck tempo. The fundamental concept is to measure remote sea surface profiles to predict the future wave forces acting upon a vessel. The objective is to expand ship operating deck limits to approximately Sea State 6+. The deck definitions generally empirically measured by using standard rating scales, are replaced by instrumented devices reporting the status of the deck prior to touch-down. In this paper, a thorough discussion describing the QPP deck measuring devices designed to replace piloted cueing is provided. Theory, previous simulation studies and current at-sea testing along with data results, are also discussed. Circular Economy (CE) minimizes waste through reduce, reuse, and recycle principles across product lifecycles. Digital technologies like IoT, AI, and big data analytics can significantly enhance CE implementation when integrated into manufacturing operations and decisions. Benefits include resource efficiency, supply chain transparency, predictive maintenance, and circular business models. However, barriers exist like high investment costs and lack of infrastructure. The paper uses mixed methods to explore how digitalization can promote CE practices within Saudi manufacturing. It summarizes the global digitalization trends enabling CE in manufacturing and provides an outlook on Saudi Arabia’s vision 2030 strategy. It also highlights early sustainability initiatives in Saudi manufacturing, key challenges identified via stakeholder engagements, and policy measures needed to incentivize adoption. It concludes that digitalization presents an immense opportunity to advance CE manufacturing in alignment with Saudi’s economic diversification and resilience goals. However, realizing sustainability and competitiveness benefits requires urgent multi-stakeholder collaboration and interdisciplinary perspectives. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Phase change materials(PCMs)have remarkable energy storage capacity and promising applications in the field of thermal control of electronic *** problem of thermal property improvement and heat transfer of PCMs in metal-foam heatsinks is an important task for thermal management of electronic *** paraffin samples were prepared by mixing appropriate proportions of paraffin(mass)at various *** scanning calorimetry analysis revealed that the maximum enthalpy of 206.3 J/g is obtained by mixing 20%of 17°C liquid paraffin and 80%of 29℃ solid *** and cooling cycling tests revealed that mixed paraffin exhibits excellent thermal stability and that the regulation method marginally affects thermal ***,composites were prepared by embedding PCM into a copper foam by melt *** thermal conductivity of the composites increased to 4.35 W/(m K),corresponding to 20 times its original *** addition,density functional theory and experimental results were in good agreement,indicating that the regulation method is practical and effective.

Community detection reveals the unique characteristics and relationships of in-network members, differentiated from out-of-community members and plays a pivotal role in network analysis. In recent years, deep learning techniques have made great strides in the application of community detection, especially on label sampling models, which train graph convolutional networks by constructing a balanced training set through structural centre localization and neighbourhood node expansion. However, such algorithms are limited on centre selection in community structure. To address this, this paper introduces a novel community detection algorithm based on peak density adaptive iterative segmentation, or LDACN in short. First, labels are assigned by adaptively selecting the centre node of the community structure, which results in a more even distribution of labels in the network. Subsequently, more accurate community segmentation is achieved by taking advantage of GCN's combined ability in capturing the connectivity relationships between the nodes and their intrinsic characteristics. Experimental results on synthetic and real-world network datasets show that our algorithm improves the effectiveness of community segmentation compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms. © 2024 IEEE.

The present study seeks to examine the extent to which tutor quality affects the acceptance level of students toward e-learning at public universities in Malaysia, while also considering the mediating role of e-Assessment. The structured questionnaires were adopted to collect 450 responses from students in public universities. The outcomes demonstrate a significant and positive relationship between tutor quality and students' e-learning adoption rate. Additionally, the relationship between tutor quality and acceptance level of students toward e-learning is significantly mediated by e-Assessment. The key gap that the present study has filled is the inclusion of the above-stated mediating variable. Several important recommendations and insights are provided to enhance the acceptance and effectiveness of e-learning in this specific educational environment. © 2024 IEEE.

In the context of the fifth-generation(5G)smart era,the demand for electromagnetic wave(EMW)-absorbing materials has become increasingly prominent,so it is necessary to explore promising candidate *** work focuses on the exploration of the material absorbing properties of a MoAlB MAB(MAB represents a promising group of alternatives,where M stands for a transition metal,A typically denotes Al,and B is boron)phase ***,the first-principles calculations were performed to reveal the unique crystal and layered structure of the MoAlB ceramics and to predict their potential for use as an EMW absorption ***,a series of MoAlB ceramics were synthesized at temperatures ranging from 800 to 1300℃,and the influence of temperature on the phase compositions and microstructures of the obtained MoAlB ceramics was characterized and ***,the practical EMW absorption performance of the prepared MoAlB ceramics was evaluated via a combination of experiments and radar cross-sectional *** MoAlB sample synthesized at 900℃ exhibits superior EMW absorption performance,achieving an impressive minimum reflection loss(RL)of−50.33 *** unique layered structure and good electrical conductivity of the MoAlB samples are the main reasons for their enhanced wave absorption performance,which provides interfacial polarization and multiple dielectric loss ***,this study not only contributes to the understanding of the preparation of MoAlB materials but also provides potential guidance for their utilization in the realm of electromagnetic wave absorption.
