Prism-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) optical sensors are extensively used in a variety of applications. In implementing a multilayer sensing structure, SPR phenomena are employed to detect gases in the proposed research. A BK7 glass prism is used as a sensing structure with decomposition on nano thin films based on different materials: silver (Ag), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and graphene. The methane gas is applied to the graphene sensing layer of the multilayer optical sensor. As the methane gas concentration rises around the sensor, the SPR angle varies, indicating that the refractive index of graphene layer is changed significantly due to absorption of the increasing methane gas concentration. The methane gas concentration measurement is based on an angle interrogation technique. TiO2, graphene, and Ag layers of different thicknesses have been optimised for sensor performance. © 2023 SPIE.

Electric-field-tuned anomalous valley Hall effect in A-type hexagonal antiferromagnetic monolayers

The combination of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics and anomalous valley Hall effect (AVHE) is of great significance for potential applications in valleytronics. Here, we propose a way for achieving AVHE in A-type hexagonal AFM monolayer. The proposed way involves the introduction of layer-dependent electrostatic potential caused by an out-of-plane external electric field, which can break the combined symmetry (PT symmetry) of spatial inversion (P) and time reversal (T), producing spin splitting. The spin order of spin splitting can be reversed by regulating the direction of electric field. Based on first-principles calculations, the way can be verified in AFM Cr2CH2. The layer-locked hidden Berry curvature can give rise to layer-Hall effect, including a valley layer–spin Hall effect and layer-locked AVHE. Moreover, we propose Janus monolayer Cr2CHF with internal electric polarization, which can also realize the AVHE. Our works provide an experimentally feasible way to realize AVHE in AFM monolayer.

This study explores recent developments in quantitative phase-contrast microtomography using Talbot Array Illuminators (TAI) combined with Unified Modulated Pattern Analysis (UMPA). We first compare the performance of the TAI-based method for phase-retrieval with propagation-based imaging (PBI) for analyzing a Mg-10Gd bone implant sample that violates the single-material assumption. Our results demonstrate that the TAI method yields a significantly higher contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) compared to PBI (101.68 vs. 54.37, an 87% improvement) while maintaining comparable edge sharpness. The TAI method also visualizes a substructure of the degradation layer, which appears comparatively blurred in the PBI images. Additionally, we introduce a hanging-rotation-axis approach for imaging paraffin-embedded samples in an ethanol bath, aiming to reduce edge enhancement artifacts caused by large electron density differences. Preliminary results indicate that the TAI-based images of a paraffin-embedded lymph node show improved uniformity in background intensity, though some additional low-frequency noise is observed. All experiments were conducted at the High Energy Materials Beamline (HEMS), PETRA III, DESY, operated by Hereon. Our findings highlight the potential of TAI-based phase-contrast imaging for complex, multi-material samples and suggest avenues for further optimization of the technique. © 2024 SPIE.

Weyl nodal loop semimetals and tunable quantum anomalous Hall states in two-dimensional ferromagnetic cerium monohalides

Quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect with dissipationless edge channels offers innovative insight for designing the next-generation low-power electronic devices. Based on first-principles calculations and the tight-binding (TB) model, we predict rich QAH states with a tunable Chern number in single-layer ferromagnetic cerium monohalides CeX (X = Cl, Br, I). These stable ferromagnetic single-layer materials have isotropic magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the x−y plane, which favors the adjustment of the topological state with an external magnetic field. A distinct Weyl nodal loop exists in the band structure of the CeX single layers without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). When SOC is included and all mirror symmetries are broken, QAH state can be realized. Intriguingly, QAH states with varying Chern number (C=±1), two-dimensional Weyl semimetals and band gap periodically manifest as the magnetization direction rotates in the x−y plane. Furthermore, A TB model based on Slater-Koster framework is constructed to explain the origin of nontrivial band structure in CeX single layers. The CeX single layers exhibit remarkable topological states, providing an excellent platform for exploring low-power spintronic devices.

It is challenging to make an ultrafast diagnosis of the temporal evolution of small and short-lived plasma in two dimensions. To overcome this difficulty, we have developed a well-timed diagnostic utilizing an x-ray streak camera equipped with a row of multi-pinhole arrays. By processing multiple sets of one-dimensional streaked image data acquired from various pinholes, we are capable of reconstructing high-resolution two-dimensional images with a temporal resolution of 38 ps and a spatial resolution of 18 μm. The temporal fiducial pulses accessed from external sources can advance the precise timing and accurately determine the arrival time of the laser. Moreover, it can correct the nonlinear sweeping speed of the streak camera. The effectiveness of this diagnostic has been successfully verified at the Shenguang-II laser facility,providing an indispensable tool for observing complex physical phenomena, such as the implosion process of laser-fusion experiments.

The SABRE (Sodium iodide with Active Background REjection) experiment aims to detect an annual rate modulation from dark matter interactions in ultra-high purity NaI(Tl) crystals in order to provide a model independent test of the signal observed by DAMA/LIBRA. It is made up of two separate detectors;SABRE South located at the Stawell Underground physics Laboratory (SUPL), in regional Victoria, Australia, and SABRE North at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). SABRE South is designed to disentangle seasonal or site-related effects from the dark matter-like modulated signal by using an active veto and muon detection system. Ultra-high purity NaI(Tl) crystals are immersed in a linear alkyl benzene (LAB) based liquid scintillator veto, further surrounded by passive steel and polyethylene shielding and a plastic scintillator muon veto. Significant work has been undertaken to understand and mitigate the background processes that take into account radiation from detector materials, from both intrinsic and cosmogenic activated processes, and to understand the performance of both the crystal and veto systems. SUPL is a newly built facility located 1024 m underground (∼2900 m water equivalent) within the Stawell Gold Mine and its construction was completed in mid-2022. It will house rare event physics searches, including the SABRE dark matter experiment, as well as measurement facilities to support low background physics experiments and applications such as radiobiology and quantum computing. A Communication Avoiding and Reducing Algorithm for Symmetric Eigenproblem for Very Small Matrices

In this paper, a parallel symmetric eigensolver with very small matrices in massively parallel processing is considered. We define very small matrices that fit the sizes of caches per node in a supercomputer. We assume that the sizes also fit the exa-scale computing requirements of current production runs of an application. To minimize communication time, we added several communication avoiding and communication reducing algorithms based on Message Passing Interface (MPI) non-blocking implementations. A performance evaluation with up to full nodes of the FX10 system indicates that (1) the MPI non-blocking implementation is 3x as efficient as the baseline implementation, (2) the hybrid MPI execution is 1.9x faster than the pure MPI execution, (3) our proposed solver is 2.3x and 22x faster than a ScaLAPACK routine with optimized blocking size and cyclic-cyclic distribution, respectively. © 2024, CC BY.

Magnetotransport characterization of spin structure and uncompensated magnetic moments in L10 MnPd (001) films

Antiferromagnets have attracted growing attention owing to their intriguing characteristics and promising applications in the field of spintronics. In this work, the antiferromagnetic attribute of single crystallin L10MnPd films epitaxially grown on MgO(001) substrates is proven by the exchange bias observed in L10 MnPd/Ni81Fe19 bilayers. The Néel vector in L10MnPd films is verified to be aligned along the c axis by magnetoresistance measurements in longitudinal, transverse, and polar geometries of the external magnetic field. Moreover, the anomalous Hall effect is observed to become weak with increasing MnPd film thickness, indicating the existence of uncompensated magnetic moments on the surface and the collinear spin structure of L10MnPd films. Finally, exhibiting an anomaly at low temperatures, the sheet resistivity consists of the square and logarithmic temperature dependencies, due to magnon-electron scattering and an analogous orbital two-channel Kondo effect, respectively. Of most importance, the uncompensated magnetic moments are found to govern magnetotransport properties of L10MnPd films.

The p-type TiCoSb-based half-Heuslers are widely studied due to the good electrical transport properties after hole doping,while the pristine TiCoSb is intrinsically *** is thus desired to obtain a comparable n-type counterpart through optimization of electron *** this work,n-type Ti_(0.9-x)HfxTa_(0.1)CoSb half-Heuslers were fabricated by arc melting,ball milling,and spark plasma *** optimized carrier concentration,together with a decreased lattice thermal conductivity,was obtained by Ta doping at the Ti site,leading to a peak figure of merit(ZT)of 0.7 at 973 K in Ti_(0.9)Ta_(0.1)-*** further alloying Hf at the Ti site,the lattice thermal conductivity was significantly reduced without deteriorating the power *** a result,a peak ZT of 0.9 at 973 K and an average ZT of 0.54 in the temperature range of 300-973 K were achieved in Ti_(0.6)Hf_(0.3)Ti_(0.1)*** work demonstrates that n-type TiCoSb-based halfHeuslers are promising thermoelectric materials.
