Nowadays, the representation of many real word problems needs to use some type of relational model. As a consequence, information used by a wide range of systems has been stored in multi relational tables. However, from a data mining point of view, it has been a problem, since most of the traditional data mining algorithms have not been originally proposed to handle this type of data without discarding relationship information. Aiming to ameliorate this problem, we propose a hierarchical approach for handling relational data. In this approach the relational data is converted into a hierarchical structure (the main table as the root and the relations as the nodes). This hierarchical way to represent relational data can be used either for classification or clustering purposes. In this paper, we will use it in clustering algorithms. In order to do so, we propose a hierarchical distance metric to compute the similarity between the tables. In the empirical analysis, we will apply the proposed approach in two well-known clustering algorithms (k-means and agglomerative hierarchical). Finally, this paper also compares the effectiveness of our approach with one existing relational approach.

Cloud platform provides an infrastructure for resource sharing, software hosting and service delivering in a pay-per-use approach. To test the cloud-based software systems, techniques and tools are necessary to address unique quality concerns of the cloud infrastructure such as massive scalability and dynamic configuration. The tools can also be built on the cloud platform to benefit from virtualized platform and services, massive resources, and parallelized execution. The paper makes a survey of representative approaches and typical tools for cloud testing. It identifies the needs for cloud testing tools including multi-layer testing, SLA-based testing, large scale simulation, and on-demand test environment. To address the needs, it investigates the new architecture and techniques for designing testing tools for the cloud and in the cloud. Tool implementations are surveyed considering different approaches including migrated conventional tools, research tools, commercial tools and facilities like benchmark and testbed. Based on the analysis of state-of-the-art practices, the paper further investigates future trend of testing tool research and development from both capability and usability perspectives.

Despite the major effort put into the creation of Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) systems during the last decade, the solutions available are still not satisfying for generic purposes. The most severe issue seems to be the so-called "semantic gap". It is feasible to define and use domain specific feature vectors on a low level and use this information for a similarity based retrieval. Yet, mapping these to higher level semantics remains difficult. This research investigates a domain-independent way of automatized image categorization. A CBIR query language is constructed to build query-like descriptors for each category to be learned. The proposed learning algorithm is based on decision-trees. The resulting descriptors are aimed to be understandable and modifiable by expert users. A case-study is presented to support these claims.

The ability to realize an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to improve driver safety has attracted huge interests from researchers this decade. Vehicular Communication covering vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to- infrastructure (V2I) communication supported by ITS provide ubiquitous internet connectivity among the vehicles to improve safety for drivers. In addition to carrying driver safety messages, such as emergency warning messages, accident alerts and road work messages, multi-hop routing carrying the information for driver's comfort such as long route traffic information, on road advertisements and parking assistance are also an important and challenging task in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET). This paper presents a multi-hop long range transmission of packets among the vehicles on the basis of reduced transmission hops by choosing the most suitable vehicle within the transmission range for packet transmission. The algorithm proposed in this paper, Fastest Multi-Hop Routing Scheme (FMHR) is evaluated based on incoming and outgoing throughput and compared with another multi-hop transmission algorithm [6] using different radio access technology. The simulation environment used for the evaluation of proposed algorithm is NCTUns-6.0.

MicroRNAs, by regulating the expression of hundreds of target genes, play critical roles in developmental biology and the etiology of numerous diseases, including cancer. As vast amounts of microRNA expression profile data are now publicly available, the integration of those data sets with gene expression profiles represents an extremely active area of life science research. However, the ability to conduct genome wide microRNA-mRNA (gene) integration currently requires sophisticated, high-end informatics tools, significant expertise in bioinformatics and computer science to carry out the complex integration analysis. In addition, increased computing infrastructure capabilities are essential in order to accommodate large data sets. In this study, we have extending BioVLAB cloud workbench to develop an environment for the integrated analysis of microRNA and mRNA expression data, named BioVLAB-MMIA. The workbench facilitates computations on the Amazon EC2 and S3 resources orchestrated by XBaya Workflow Suite. The advantages of BioVLAB-MMIA over the web-based MMIA system include: 1) readily expanded as new computational tools become available; 2) easily modifiable by re-configuring graphic icons in the workflow; 3) on-demand cloud computing resources can be used on an as needed basis; 4) distributed orchestration supports complex and long running workflows asynchronously.

Anypath routing has been proposed to improve the performance of unreliable wireless networks by exploiting the spatial diversity and broadcast nature of the wireless medium. In this paper, we focus on anypath routing subject to K constraints, and present a polynomial time K-approximation algorithm. When K = 1, our algorithm is the optimal polynomial time algorithm for the corresponding problem. When K ≥ 2, the corresponding problem is NP-hard. We are the first to present an O(1)-approximation algorithm. Furthermore, our algorithm is as simple as Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm, and is therefore suitable for implementation in actual wireless routing protocols. © 2010 IEEE.

The Extended Ant Colony Optimization (EACO) metaheuristic is applied to the problem of Metric Temporal Logic (MTL) falsification of nonautonomous hybrid systems. The goal of the MTL falsification problem is to detect operating conditions and input signals that will generate system trajectories that do not satisfy a user provided specification in MTL. A new method for parameterizing the input space using splines and Hermitian polynomials is introduced and the performance of the new algorithm is compared against Monte Carlo testing techniques. It is envisioned that this work will help practitioners in designing complex control or mixed-signal systems. © 2010 IEEE.

Sensors are being deployed to improve border security generating enormous collections of data and databases. Unfortunately these sensors can respond to a variety of stimuli, sometimes reacting to meaningful events and sometimes triggered by random events which are considered false alarms. The intent of this project is to supplement human intelligence in a sensor network framework that can assist in filtering and real-time decision making from the large volume of data generated. Our conceptual design of a human-computer system is to use off-line learning to identify the important patterns. The critical real-time system uses the identified patterns from off-line learning in a system that relates the risks of false alarms with the length of patterns and the time interval distributions between sensors in the patterns to allow the human to generate intervention decisions. The human would supplement the computer information with the current threat levels and the available resources for reactions. © 2010 IEEE.

Greece, via its PRODEX membership intends to meaningfully participate to the instrument development of a flagship ESA mission, the Solar Orbiter (SolO). This involvement pertains to hardware development for SolO's Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX), namely, STIX's movable attenuator. SolO will allow close-up and high-latitude studies of our mother star, the Sun, based mostly on remote-sensing measurements (imaging). STIX is a critical SolO instrument, enabling one of its major science goals: understanding and acceleration of electrons at the Sun and their transport into interplanetary space. The attenuator, or shutter, that will be developed by the Greek team, is a critical component of the STIX instrument. Attenuators are dictated by the substantial dynamical range of incident X-ray fluxes from solar flares: the largest X-ray flares can give as many as 10 5 more count rates in X-ray photons compared to those of the smallest microflare that STIX can detect. lt is proposed that two mechanisms are developed for a comparative study. First, a mechanism based on sensitive Shape Memory Alloy actuators and, second, one based on a piezoelectric actuator module. Both mechanisms will be designed and manufactured and then tested in vacuum and alternating high-low temperature conditions. Evaluation of reliability and accuracy in assembly and operation will follow. A vibrating table will be used for the dynamical analysis of the mechanism and independent strength tests of the various parts of the mechanism will follow.

Adverse reactions to drugs are among the most common causes of death in industrialized nations. Expensive clinical trials are not sufficient to uncover all of the adverse reactions a drug may cause, necessitating systems for post-marketing surveillance, or pharmacovigilance. These systems have typically relied on voluntary reporting by health care professionals. However, self-reported patient data has become an increasingly important resource, with efforts such as MedWatch from the FDA allowing reports directly from the consumer. In this paper, we propose mining the relationships between drugs and adverse reactions as reported by the patients themselves in user comments to health-related websites. We evaluate our system on a manually annotated set of user comments, with promising performance. We also report encouraging correlations between the frequency of adverse drug reactions found by our system in unlabeled data and the frequency of documented adverse drug reactions. We conclude that user comments pose a significant natural language processing challenge, but do contain useful extractable information which merits further exploration. © 2010 Association for Computational Linguistics
