This paper presents a multi-drug chemotherapy scheduling method for cancer treatment using multi-objective optimisation technique. Cancer cells, very often, grows resistance to a drug if it is administered alone for a long time and drug resistance eventually causes failure to treatment in most cases. The adaptation of multi-drug treatment in cancer increases the drug performance by reducing the drug resistance. But care must be taken to design the multi-drug scheduling so as to equilibrium the drug beneficial and adverse side effects of the treatment. Conventional clinical methods can hardly find optimum dosages of drugs that can kill maximum cancerous cells with minimum toxic side effects. This is because of the inherent conflict between the cell killing and the toxic side effects in case of cancer. This paper presents a novel method of multi-drug scheduling using multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) that can trading-off between the cell killing and toxic side effects during the whole period of treatment. A close-loop control method, namely Integral-Proportional-Derivative (I-PD) is designed to control dosages of drugs to be infused to the patient's body and MOGA is used to find suitable/acceptable parameters of the controller. A cell compartments model is developed and used to describe the effects of the drugs on different type of cells, plasma drug concentration and toxic side effects. Results show that drug scheduling obtained through the proposed method can reduce the tumour size more than 99% with relatively lower toxic side effects. Moreover, the drug dosage and drug concentration remain at low level throughout the whole period.

Modern machine learning techniques have encouraged interest in the development of vehicle health monitoring systems that ensure secure and reliable operations of rail vehicles. In an earlier study, an energy-efficient data acquisition method was investigated to develop a monitoring system for railway applications using modern machine learning techniques, more specific classification algorithms. A suitable classifier was proposed for railway monitoring based on relative weighted performance metrics. To improve the performance of the existing approach, a rule-based learning method using statistical analysis has been proposed in this paper to select a unique classifier for the same application. This selected algorithm works more efficiently and improves the overall performance of the railway monitoring systems. This study has been conducted using six classifiers, namely REPTree, J48, Decision Stump, IBK, PART and OneR, with twenty-five datasets. The Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA) learning tool has been used in this study to develop the prediction models. © 2010 IEEE.

Understanding of the underlying concepts, principles, and theories of computer network can significantly benefit from simulation tools. Usage and development of simulation models for computer networks, however, can be demanding in educational settings. While a variety of open source and commercial tools are available, there remains a desire for simulators that can better support student learning and instructor teaching. In this work, the DEVS-Suite general-purpose simulator is extended to support modeling of network protocols. A model library for the OSPF protocol has been developed such that the emphasis is placed on education to capture the basic principles of network protocols using sound modeling and simulation principles instead of supporting highly detailed network protocol simulations. The use and pedagogical effectiveness of the DEVS-Suite network simulator is carried out in a classroom setting. The results of the student survey are presented and discussed.

In a Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC)-based embedded system with Network-on-chip (NoC) as the communication architecture, routing of the communication traffic among the Processing Elements (PEs) contributes significantly to the overall latency, throughput and energy consumption. Design of an efficient routing algorithm for NoC requires a thorough understanding of the role of individual components of NoC. Simulation based studies are time-consuming and do not provide adequate insight into the design parameters for performance improvement. In this paper, we provide a framework for the analytical study of the NoC components and design an adaptive routing algorithm. Based on the traffic pattern of the communication traffic among PEs, we perform analytical studies based on network calculus and probabilistic analysis. Analytical study relates the design parameters with the worst case and average case latency and buffer requirements. Knowledge obtained from the analytical study is utilized for resource allocation of NoC, which further constitutes the design philosophy of the proposed Bounded Deflection Adaptive Routing (BDAR) algorithm. Our routing algorithm is deadlock-live lock free and efficiently reacts to link congestions. Experimental results based on simulations show that our routing algorithm performs significantly better than some existing static and dynamic routing in terms of link utilization, average and maximum end-to-end latency.

Software as a Service (SaaS) with multi-tenancy architecture is a popular approach. To support a significant number of tenants, SaaS applications need be customizable to fulfill the various functional and quality requirements of individual tenants. This paper presents a unified and innovative multi-layered customization framework, to support and manage the variability of SaaS applications and tenants-specific requirements. Ontology is used to derive customization and deployment information for tenants cross layers. This framework also has an intelligent recommendation engine to support new tenants to deploy using information from existing deployed SaaS applications. A case study in mortgage application is used to demonstrate the proposed model.

Many important scientific and engineering problems are studied using Cellular Automata (CA) models. Mathematical formulae with component-based modeling concepts are used to specify CA models. Computer simulation tools support viewing the dynamics of CA simulation models. Existing approaches with their tools are restrictive from visual model development perspective since models must be specified in programming languages or use pre-built models. In this paper, the novel concept of spatial-specialization CA modeling is developed and introduced into CoSMoS (Component-based System Modeler and Simulator) - a logical, visual, and persistence modeling and simulation framework. Modelers can visually create and manipulate structures of a family of hierarchical component-based CA models. The tool supports persistent models and semi-automatic parallel DEVS-based simulation code. © 2010 SCS.

It is recognized that the key theoretical and technical problems toward the next generation internet are not only a speed issue, but also a more fundamental issue of the increasingly demands for the sharing of computational intelligent capabilities. According to cognitive informatics, the cognitive information that humans acquire, process, retain, and share can be classified into four profound forms known as knowledge, experience, skill, and wisdom. Among them, wisdom is the most advanced cognitive objects, which is a form of natural intelligence of humans that transfers a query or instruction into an action or behavior based on a well developed reasoning and judgment. However, the current Internet is still remains as an information network. Towards the development of next generation Internet as a wisdom network, the World Wide Wisdom (WWW+) network infrastructures and technologies are yet to be sough t on the basis of cognitive informatics and cognitive computers. In WWW+, each node is a cognitive computer (CC), which is a form of autonomous and intelligent computers that think, perceive, and learn. CC enables the simulation of machinable thought such as computational inferences, reasoning, and causality analyses by autonomous inferences and perceptions mimicking the mechanisms of the brain [3, 15]. The cognitive learning engine of a CC is an autonomous learning system that enables machines learn in natural languages and symbolic notations. The cognitive search engine of a CC is a machine-learning-based search system that results in cognitive knowledge acquisitions and manipulations. On the basis of the development of CCs, the next generation internet, WWW+, will be developed as a world-wide intelligent network for knowledge processing, autonomous learning, and machine-supported problem solving. Causal inference is one of the central capabilities of the natural intelligence that plays a crucial role in thought, perception, reasoning, and problem solving. This paper presents a set of cognitive models for causation analyses and causal inferences. The taxonomy and mathematical models of causations are created. The framework and properties of causal inferences are elaborated. Methodologies for uncertain causal inferences are discussed. The formalization of causal inference methodologies enables machines to mimic complex human reasoning mechanisms in cognitive informatics, cognitive computing, and computational intelligence.

Microdata protection in statistical databases has recently become a major societal concern and has been intensively studied in recent years. Statistical Disclosure Control (SDC) is often applied to statistical databases before they are released for public use. Micro aggregation for SDC is a family of methods to protect micro data from individual identification. SDC seeks to protect micro data in such a way that can be published and mined without providing any private information that can be linked to specific individuals. Micro aggregation works by partitioning the micro data into groups of at least k records and then replacing the records in each group with the centroid of the group. An optimal micro aggregation method must minimize the information loss resulting from this replacement process. The challenge is how to minimize the information loss during the micro aggregation process. This paper presents a pair wise systematic (P-S) micro aggregation method to minimize the information loss. The proposed technique simultaneously forms two distant groups at a time with the corresponding similar records together in a systematic way and then anonymized with the centroid of each group individually. The structure of P-S problem is defined and investigated and an algorithm of the proposed problem is developed. The performance of the P-S algorithm is compared against the most recent micro aggregation methods. Experimental results show that P-S algorithm incurs less than half information loss than the latest micro aggregation methods for all of the test situations.
