Network reliability, specifically k-terminal reliability, gives the probability that k specified nodes in a network are connected. Multi-terminal network resilience measures the average k-terminal reliability over all node sets of size k. This is the expectation that a randomly chosen set of k nodes is connected. One may also ask for the probability that any k nodes are connected. This leads to three ways to require a set of k nodes be connected: the nodes are provided as input to the problem (as in reliability), they are randomly chosen (as in resilience), or they can be any k nodes. Certain problems may require a set constructed by some combination of the three. We introduce new measures to cover these possibilities, and reduce all measures to two general expressions that capture them. These expressions permit the consideration of decades of work on reliability to solve them. Additionally, we introduce six component-based network measures, and demonstrate how they can be solved alongside reliability and resilience. The component based measures admit even more variability in problem definition. In the end, we have thirteen distinct measures, and solve them simultaneously. An algorithm and example results are provided.

The paper focuses on a novel system iFeel-IM! that integrates 3D virtual world Second Life, intelligent component for automatic emotion recognition from text messages, and innovative affective haptic interfaces providing additional nonverbal communication channels through simulation of emotional feedback and social touch (physical co-presence). The motivation behind our work is to enrich social interaction and emotional involvement of online interpersonal communication. iFeel-IM! users can not only exchange messages but also emotionally and physically feel the presence of the communication partner (e.g., family member, friend, or beloved person). © 2009 SICE.

Mobile learning has significant potential to be very influential in developing countries. Because of its ubiquitous nature and comparatively low cost, the mobile phone system appears to be the most practical way of delivering m-learning for the foreseeable future. Mobile learning with its any time/place/pace learning will conveniently accommodate different modes of language learning for different groups of learners. In this study, three different educational environments have been utilised for Iranian language learners. Government employees received continuous refreshment of their language skills in a non-formal mode using a combination of mobile Web and short messaging. Two mobile games have been designed, which served as a platform for exercises, assignments and self-study in combination with schools and higher education. These games have shown that they can motivate the learners using an informal setting. Learners develop their knowledge whilst they perform in a pleasant virtual world in order to achieve the goals proposed. The paper concludes that using m-learning within the informal framework of learning provides a ubiquitous tool that can powerfully help adult learners and students in Iran during their continuous lifelong learning.

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are emerging as a key technology for the next-generation wireless networks owing to its attractive properties, such as dynamic self-organisation, quick deployment, easy maintenance, low cost, and high scalability. In this paper, we develop an analytical model to investigate the end-to-end delay in a random-access two-tier (i.e., the backhaul tier and access tier) WMN. In the backhaul tier, mesh routers are uniformly distributed in a grid placement. The access tier is formed by a series of wireless local area networks. After validating the accuracy of the analytical model through simulation experiments, we use the model to tune the system parameters in order to minimise the end-to-end delay.

The provisioning of fairness among various networking and communication applications is an important quality-of-service (QoS) demand and becomes a challenging research topic. Deficit Round Robin (DRR) is a promising fair scheduling mechanism owing to its low complexity and excellent ability of achieving a good degree of fairness in terms of throughput. Although self-similar traffic has been found to exist in multimedia communication networks and has a great impact on the performance of scheduling mechanisms, there has not been any analytical model reported in the open literature for DRR in the presence of self-similar traffic. To fill this gap, we analytically investigate the queueing performance of DRR scheduling mechanism and develop a new analytical model for deriving the upper and lower bounds of the queue length distributions of individual traffic flows in DRR systems under self-similar traffic. Extensive comparison between the simulation and analytical results validates the accuracy of the developed model.

The last few years have seen considerable interest in the wireless networking research community in analyzing the connectivity of wireless ad-hoc networks formed by a set of nodes distributed in a two dimensional plane (deployment area) with a (i) uniform probability density function and (ii) uniform transmission range. Although several important and interesting results are known in this domain, most of the connectivity studies consider a fault-free scenario where all nodes are available for network formation and do not consider failures among nodes caused by one reason or another. In very few studies where faults are considered, they are usually considered to be random in nature, i.e., the probability of a node failing is independent of its location in the deployment area. However, such fault scenario is inadequate to capture many realistic situations where the faulty nodes are spatially correlated. This is particularly true in combat environment where an enemy bomb can destroy a subset of nodes confined to a region. In this paper we investigate the impact of region-based faults on the connectivity of wireless networks. Through analysis and simulation, we provide results relating the probability of a network being connected as transmission range and the size of fault-region are varied. If d min (G) denotes the minimum node degree of the network, we provide the analytical expression for P(d min (G) ¿ k), which represents the probability of the minimum node degree being at least k, for k = 1. Moreover, we compute P(¿(G) ¿ k), where ¿(G) represents the connectivity of the graph G formed by the distribution of nodes in the deployment area and examine the relationship between P(d min (G) ¿ k) and P(¿(G) ¿ k) when k = 1.

Association link network (ALN) is used to establish associated relations among various resources, aiming at extending the hyperlink network World Wide Web to an association-rich network, for effectively supporting Web intelligence activities. Unfortunately, with the increase number of Web resources, the challenge of incremental building of ALN is on how to perform the association weight of the new coming Web resources efficiently and exactly. A naive way is to compare every pair of data in the existing ALN, thus bearing a O(n 2 ) time complexity. Given the scale of the Web, it is unrealistic to compute the association weight between the new coming Web data and each data in the existing ALN, respectively. In this paper, a new method based on All-Pairs algorithm for incremental building of ALN is proposed. The experiments and evaluations show that our incremental building method performs a high accuracy. Moreover, the scale-independent property of our method make it more appropriate to be used on the Web.

Resource Space Model (RSM) is a normalized classification model that uses m-dimensional semantic spaces to share and manage various resources in a centralized manner. This paper explores how to use the idea of classification semantics to organize indexes of resources in a decentralized manner. We deploy RSM on a structured P2P topology HRing by two ID management methods. HRing is a ring-structured P2P topology that can achieve logarithmic routing table size and routing hops. Theoretical analysis and simulations show that both methods can still maintain logarithmic performance and cost. Thus, the decentralized RSM on HRing can be applied on dynamic and large-scale resource-sharing systems.

In this case study, we report what we believe to be the first prolonged in-situ use of a brain-body interface for rehabilitation of individuals with severe neurological impairment due to traumatic brain injury with no development researchers present. We attribute this success to the development of an adaptive cursor acceleration algorithm based on screen tiling, which we combined with an adaptable user interface to achieve inclusive design through personalisation for each individual. A successful evaluation of this approach encouraged us to leave our Brain-Body Interface in the care settings of our evaluation participants with traumatic brain injury, where it was used with support from health care professionals and other members of participants' care circles.

The increasing demand for the coverage of high-speed wireless local area networks (WLANs) is driving the installation of a very large number of access points. Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have emerged as a promising technology in next generation networks to provide economical and scalable broadband access to wireless interconnection of multiple access points which manage individual WLANs in order to extend the coverage of conventional single WLANs. Due to various types of applications with particular purposes running at different WLANs, the traffic generated by stations in different WLANs possess a high degree of heterogeneity. To the best of our knowledge, there is hardly any analytical model reported in the current literature to handle heterogeneous network traffic in the integrated WMNs and WLANs. To fill this gap, we develop a new analytical model to investigate the Quality-of-Service (QoS) performance metrics in WMNs interconnecting multiple WLANs with heterogeneous stations. The Poisson process is employed to model the traffic of non-bursty data applications and the Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) is used to model the traffic of bursty multimedia applications. Extensive simulation experiments are conducted to validate the accuracy of the analytical model.
