In this paper, several augmented reality (AR) games used in mobile learning have been evaluated. It is concluded that AR adds a real sense of learning to mobile games by providing models of real world settings for learners. The learning objectives must be integrated into the game rules, story and different levels. The game model must be close to the real world; each team member must have distinct roles; resources must be constrained and appropriate feedback and challenges must be used throughout the game system. By using this emerging paradigm of instruction, educators can effectively incorporate these games into their curricula.

Multicast communication is an efficient method of data transmission and distribution among a group, especially when network resources are inadequate and needs to be shared. Fair share of network resources, such as, bandwidth, is desirable in such cases. Although there has been an intensive research effort to design protocols and construct multicast routing graphs for a single multicast group, construction of multiple multicast groups and the fair allocation of network resources remains virtually unexplored. In this paper, a unified approach for the Multiple Multicast Tree Construction and Rate Allocation (MMTCRA) problem is addressed. The MMTCRA problem has been defined as an optimization problem with an objective of finding a Max-Min Fair rate allocation among the multiple multicast groups that co-exist in the network subject to the link-capacity constraints. The problem is proved to be NP-Complete. A Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) is formulated to achieve the optimal solution for this problem. A heuristic is proposed to solve the MMTCRA problem in polynomial time. The quality of the heuristic is evaluated by comparing the solution with the optimal solution for several randomly generated networks. A metric for user satisfaction, USat, has been defined in the paper. Experimental results show that 81% solutions obtained from heuristic have optimal USat, 95% solutions obtained from heuristic have optimal minimum allocated rate and the standard deviation of solutions are within 10% of optimal solutions.

The k-ary n-cube which has an n-dimensional grid structure with k nodes in each dimension has been a popular topology for interconnection networks. Analytical models for k-ary n-cubes have been widely reported under the assumptions that the message destinations are uniformly distributed over all network nodes and the message arrivals follow a non-bursty Poisson process. Recent studies have convincingly demonstrated that the traffic pattern in interconnection networks reveals the bursty nature in the both spatial domain (i.e., non-uniform distribution of message destinations) and temporal domain (i.e., bursty message arrival process). With the aim of capturing the characteristics of the realistic traffic pattern and obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the performance behaviour of interconnection networks, this paper presents a new analytical model for k-ary n-cubes in the presence of spatio-temporal bursty traffic. The accuracy of the model is validated through extensive simulation experiments of an actual system.

With the Internet has come the phenomenon of people volunteering to work on digital public goods such as open source software and online encyclopedia articles. Presumably, the success of individual public goods has an effect on attracting volunteers. However, the definition of success is ill-defined. This paper explores the impact of different success metrics on a simple public goods model. The findings show that the success metrics considered have minimal impact on the behavior of the model, leading to the conclusion that many proposed success metrics measure the same phenomenon.

In this paper we discuss one relatively hidden but important issue related to information systems development - weak integration of performing and managing the information systems development. Among others, two causes for such weak integration are identified as important-weak integration of methodological support to the performing and managing the development, and difficulties in knowledge transfer. We show that in practice this may have some important adverse consequences for development process, such as communication problems between engineering and managerial parts of the development team, or insisting on application of inappropriate method. In this paper we argue that the methodological integration is, rather than methodological innovation, a potential solution to this problem - both processes have traditionally quite well developed methodological support but the essential interconnection of these methods is often missing. As another potential improvement primarily intended to facilitate knowledge transfer within development team, we also suggest stronger integration of knowledge that the development process managers should possess.

A novel cell formation algorithm has been introduced in this paper. The motivation of the research is the lack of attention in important information, e.g., production demand (or part-volume), in the most of the cell formation techniques. For example, one of the crucial steps in the design of a cellular manufacturing system is the cell formation problem, which involves grouping the parts into part families and machines into machine groups. It has been found that 80% of the cell formation problems consider only 0-1 (binary) machine-part incidence matrix that ignores the sequence of operations in manufacturing parts. Further, literature reveals that only a few studies consider alternative routing. In order to cope with this situation a new cell formation algorithm, considering the factors sequence of operation, alternative routing and part-volume, is introduced.

The discovery of biomarkers and the underlying causes of diseases are enabled through the analysis of biological samples and data stored in biobanks. Biological samples and their associated data are expensive to collect and maintain, and it is important to store and manage them efficiently. During processing, samples and data go through a number of procedures and techniques, which are often in different locations and by individuals with different access permissions. It is essential to maintain the link between the samples and their associated data throughout the processes they undergo. This paper presents a novel system of tracking samples and data from collection through processing to storage and retrieval, which is based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. This system ensures the security and reliability of sample data as well as locationindependent recording and updating of sample data, as they move along the workflow. ©2009 IEEE.

This paper proposes novel techniques for the improvement of the convergence characteristic of step-by-step time integrations in nonlinear transient eddy-current analyses. The proposed methods, which are based on the time-periodic finite-element method and the explicit error correction method, can extract poorly-converged error components corresponding to large time constants of an analyzed system. The correction of the extracted error components accelerates the convergence of transient calculation efficiently. Furthermore, we extend the performance of the proposed methods in nonlinear problems. Some numerical results that verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods are also presented. © 2009 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Cluster-based systems have emerged as a promising technology for providing cost-effectiveness in high-performance computing and communication systems. Performance studies on communication networks in cluster-based systems have been reported based on the simplified assumptions that the traffic follows the non-bursty Poisson process and the message destinations are uniformly distributed over all network nodes. However, the uniform distribution of message destinations is not always realistic in practice. Moreover, the communication locality, a typical example of the non-uniform destination distribution, has been shown to be an important phenomenon in the communication networks of cluster systems. Many recent measurement studies have revealed that the traffic generated by many real-world applications exhibits a high degree of burstiness. In order to have a comprehensive understanding of the system performance, this paper proposes a new analytical model for communication networks in multi-cluster systems under the bursty message arrivals with communication locality. The model is validated through extensive simulation experiments.
