Circles are frequently used for modelling the growth of particle aggregates through the Johnson-Mehl tessellation, that is a special instance of the Voronoi diagram of circles. Voronoi diagrams allow one to answer proximity queries after locating a query point in the Voronoi zone it belongs to. The dual graph of the Voronoi diagram is called the Delaunay graph. In this paper, we first show a necessary and sufficient condition of connectivity of the Voronoi diagram of circles. Then, we show how the Delaunay graph of circles (the dual graph of the Voronoi diagram of circles) can be computed exactly, and in a much simpler way, by computing the eigenvalues of a two by two matrix. Finally, we present how the Voronoi diagram of circles can be used to model the growth of particle aggregates. We use the Poisson point process in the Voronoi diagram of circles to generate the Johnson-Mehl tesselation. The Johnson-Mehl model is a Poisson Voronoi growth model, in which nuclei are generated asynchronously using a Poisson point process, and grow at the same radial speed. Growth models produce spatial patterns as a result of simple growth processes and their visualization is important in many technical processes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

This article presents a novel framework of image sensing based on the time-domain correlation image sensor. The correlation detection mechanism of the sensor realizes pixel-parallel, selective detection of wideband modulated optical patterns at an ordinary frame rate, which cannot be achieved by conventional image sensors. This remarkable feature allows a variety of real-time imaging applications that employ powerful techniques of correlation detection. © 2009 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

One of the most critical reason that prevents embodied conversational agents to be used in practical applications can be considered as the lack of the capabilities to be aware of multiple users and to interact with them. This paper presents our investigations in an advanced tour guide agent system serving two users and a simpler quiz agent kiosk which is developed for public exhibitions. To improve the life likeness of the agents, we propose that the agent should be attentive to its users. To achieve the agent's attentiveness toward the users, two aspects are considered: its utterance strategy toward the users and its internal attitude should be adaptive to users' status. To explore these two aspects more throughly, two prototype systems are implemented and evaluated with subject experiments respectively. In addition to regular questionnaires evaluation, GNAT test that measures implicit preference was conducted as well. The preliminary results implied that the experiment participants perceived that the agents are attentive and natural.

The due date assignment and scheduling problems arise in production planning when the management is faced with setting realistic due dates for a number of jobs. Most research on scheduling with due date assignment is focused on optimal sequencing of independent jobs. However, it is often found in practice that some products are manufactured in a certain order implied, for example, by technological, marketing or assembly requirements and this can be modeled by imposing precedence constraints on the set of jobs. In classical deterministic scheduling models, the processing conditions, including job processing times, are usually viewed as given constants. However, in many real-life situations, the processing conditions may vary over time, thereby affecting actual durations of jobs. There are two categories of scheduling models in which the actual processing time of a job depends on its place in the schedule: in scheduling with deterioration, the later a job starts, the longer it takes to process, and in scheduling with learning, the actual processing time of a job gets shorter, provided that the job is scheduled later. We review the results on scheduling with due date assignment under such conditions on job processing as given precedence constraints or various scenarios of processing time deterioration and learning. © 2009 IFAC.

Data quality is one of the fundamental issues influencing the performance of any data investigation algorithm. Poor data quality always leads to poor quality results. In the investigation chain, the data selection phase is followed by the preprocessing phase, which results in increased data quality, while in parallel it demands the highest time resources of the overall data investigation chain. The preprocessing phase includes the handling of missing data, handling of the outliers, data de-trending and data smoothing. The methods that are used in the preprocessing phase are usually not sufficiently reported in the literature of environmental data analysis and knowledge extraction. The current paper investigates the performance of several methods in all phases of the preprocessing chain of environmental data, by emphasizing in the use of ICT (Information & Communication Technology) methods for the materialization of such preprocessing tasks, and by making use of the air quality as the environmental domain paradigm. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

This paper makes use of the minimum of a random number of non-negative random variables and a non-negative random variable for formulating a stochastic multiplicative model. Sufficient conditions for evaluating the distribution function of the model are also established. Moreover, the paper provides applications of the formulated model in investigating the performance of a complex system in the environment of a random number of competing and catastrophic risks. Data analysis processes in scientific applications can be expressed as coarse-grain workflows of complex data processing operations with data flow dependencies between them. Performance optimization of these workflows can be viewed as a search for a set of optimal values in a multi-dimensional parameter space. While some performance parameters such as grouping of workflow components and their mapping to machines do not affect the accuracy of the output, others may dictate trading the output quality of individual components (and of the whole workflow) for performance. This paper describes an integrated framework which is capable of supporting performance optimizations along multiple dimensions of the parameter space. Using two real-world applications in the spatial data analysis domain, we present an experimental evaluation of the proposed framework. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Hypertension,among diabetes,obesity and others,is one of the common human diseases that is genetically expressed as complex traits to which genetic,environmental,and demographic factors contribute *** the underlying genes and examining their interactions, a crucial step in understanding the molecular pathogenesis of complex diseases,is both a statistical and a computational challenge,stressing the need for novel strategies to move this process *** this paper we propose a new method to study the association of multiple gene interactions for complex *** method is carried out by two ***,we sequentially select additionally associated SNP loci combinations by minimizing the p-value of a test based on an information measure,measure of information ***,this approach is called MID ***,the significance of the selected associated loci combinations is assessed by an x *** MID method is model-free and nonparametric,it is easy to compute and *** capability of the MID method is confirmed by applying it to investigate the multiple gene interactions on risk of hypertension in northern Han Chinese,where thirty-three SNP loci with three-genotype in eleven candidate genes are *** results are consistent with those of Gu et al（2006）.Additionally,we get some other new *** indicates that our idea is indeed feasible and useful in practice.
