Even though "providing insight" has been considered one of the main purposes of information visualization (InfoVis), we feel that insight is still a not-well-understood concept in this context. Inspired by research in sensemaking, we realized the importance of the procedural aspects in understanding insight. Thus, rather than asking "What is insight?" we instead focus on "How do people gain insights?" In an effort to better understand and characterize insight, we reviewed previous literature in InfoVis, seeking other researchers' comments and views on this concept. We found that: 1) Insights are often regarded as end results of using InfoVis and the procedures to gain insight have been largely veiled;2) Four largely distinctive processes of gaining insight (Provide Overview, Adjust, Detect Pattern, and Match Mental Model) have been discussed in the InfoVis literature;and 3) These different processes provide some hints to understand the procedures in which insight can be gained from InfoVis. We hope that our findings help researchers and practitioners evaluate InfoVis systems and technologies in a more insight-oriented way. Copyright 2008 ACM.

This paper presents an artificial homeostatic system (AHS) devoted to the autonomous navigation of mobile robots, with emphasis on neuro-endocrine interactions. The AHS is composed of two modules, each one associated with a particular reactive task and both implemented using an extended version of the GasNet neural model, denoted spatially unconstrained GasNet model or simply non-spatial GasNet (NSGasNet). There is a coordination system, which is responsible for the specific role of each NSGasNet at a given operational condition. The switching among the NSGasNets is implemented as an artificial endocrine system (AES), which is based on a system of coupled nonlinear difference equations. The NSGasNets are synthesized by means of an evolutionary algorithm. The obtained neuro-endocrine controller is adopted in simulated and real benchmark applications, and the additional flexibility provided by the use of NSGasNet, together with the existence of an automatic coordination system, guides to convincing levels of performance.

In this paper, a new architecture integrating fingerprint with cryptosystem is proposed to protect contents from unauthorized access and illegal redistribution. We describe a scheme integrating anti-collusion code and home page public-key cryptosystem. In this paper, we propose two controllers which extend the original PD+I fuzzy logic controller to treat the plant with time varying nonlinear dynamics. The adaptation ability of the first self tuning PD+I fuzzy logic controller (STPD+I_31) is obtained by adjusting the output scaling factor automatically thereby contributing to significant improvement in performance. Second proposed controller (STPD+I_9) is the simplified version of STPD+I_31 which is designed under the imposed constraint that allows only minimum number of rules in the rule bases. The proposed controllers are compared with two classical nonlinear controllers: the pole placement self tuning PID controller and sliding mode controller. All the controllers are applied to the two-links revolute robot for the tracking control. The tracking performance of STPD+I_31 and STPD+I_9 are much better than the pole placement self tuning PID controller during high speed operations while the performance are comparable at low and medium speed. In addition, STPD+I_31 and STPD+I_9 outperform sliding mode controller under same method of comparison study.

The availability of low-powered and cheap microprocessors, radio frequency integrated circuits and the development of new wireless communication techniques, make the wireless sensor networks (WSN) one of todays most promising technologies. Minimizing energy consumption and maximizing the lifetime of the networks are key requirements in the design of sensor network applications. Optimally designed medium access control (MAC) and routing protocols minimize energy consumption and prolong the network life. In this study, we have investigated an energy-efficient adaptive TDMA (EA-TDMA) protocol for railway applications that used in communication between sensor nodes and the cluster-head (CH) placed in a railway wagon. This protocol is suitable for medium traffic applications and reduces energy consumption by shortening the idle period when devices have no data to transmit. We have developed an analytical model for EA-TDMA and compared its performance with conventional TDMA and bit-map-assisted (BMA) protocols.

Wireless sensor networking (WSN) and modern machine learning techniques have encouraged interest in the development of vehicle monitoring systems that ensure safe and secure operations of the rail vehicle. To make an energy-efficient WSN application, power consumption due to raw data collection and pre-processing needs to be kept to a minimum level. In this paper, an energy-efficient data acquisition method has investigated for WSN applications using modern machine learning techniques. In an existing system, four sensor nodes were placed in each railway wagon to collect data to develop a monitoring system for railways. In this system, three sensor nodes were placed in each wagon to collect the same data using popular regression algorithms, which reduces power consumption of the system. This study was conducted using six different regression algorithms with five different datasets. Finally the best suitable algorithm have suggested based on the performance metrics of the algorithms that include: correlation coefficient, root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), root relative squared error (RRSE), relative absolute error (RAE) and computation complexity.

One of the most important bits of every search engine is the query interface. Complex interfaces may cause users to struggle in learning the handling. An example is the query language SQL. It is really powerful, but usually remains hidden to the common user. On the other hand the usage of current languages for Internet search engines is very simple and straightforward. Even beginners are able to find relevant documents. This paper presents a hybrid query language suitable for both image and text retrieval. It is very similar to those of a full text search engine but also includes some extensions required for content based image retrieval. The language is extensible to cover arbitrary feature vectors and handle fuzzy queries.

Particle swarm has proven to be competitive to other evolutionary algorithms in the field of optimization, and in many cases enables a faster convergence to the ideal solution. However, like any optimization algorithm it seems to have difficulties handling optimization problems of high dimension. Here we first show that dimensionality is really a problem for the classical particle swarm algorithms. We then show that increasing the swarm size can be necessary to handle problem of high dimensions but is not enough. We also show that the issue of scalability occurs more quickly on some functions.
